Cognitive Behavioral Therapy as a Treatment for Electroconvulsive Therapy Phobia: Case Report and Review of Literature.

BACKGROUND: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) can raise feelings of fear and anxiety in our patients. No documented cases of phobia regarding ECT or its treatment were found in the literature. METHODS: We present a patient who developed anxiety regarding ECT that was severe enough to be classified as a phobia. She was successfully treated with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for her phobia and was subsequently able to tolerate ECT. We conducted a literature review of ECT phobia, fear, and anxiety using MEDLINE, PsycINFO, and EMBASE. RESULTS: We outlined how CBT, in our specific case, was he

[The Use of Dialectical-Behavior Therapy in the Treatment of Substance Use Disorders].

BACKGROUND: The treatment of substance use disorders (SUD) remains a persistent challenge. Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is a multimodal cognitive-behavioral treatment approach that integrates acceptance- and change-oriented strategies and was originally developed to address severe emotion dysregulation. In the context of SUD, DBT-based adaptations and skills-oriented formats are particularly used to target emotion regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness and relapse prevention. Aim: The aim of this review was to synthesize the current state of research in order to explore and evaluate

Cognitive Behavior Therapy for Psychosis in People with Intellectual Disability-A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Cognitive behavior therapy for psychosis (CBTp) is effective in reducing psychiatric symptoms. Most CBTp trials have excluded patients with intellectual disabilities, even though intellectual disabilities are associated with an at least 3 times higher psychosis prevalence. More understanding of evidence-based approaches for this population is needed. The aim of this review was to assess the current state of knowledge about CBTp for people with both intellectual disabilities and psychosis. Specifically, the interests were the efficacy and feasibility of CBTp for this

Bibliometric analysis of global research on dialectical behavior therapy from 1987 to 2024.

OBJECTIVE: This study explores researches of dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) in mental health to provide an overview of current knowledge landscape and predict future development trends of DBT. METHOD: The bibliometric approach was used in the study. Articles on DBT-related research were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database up to December 31, 2024, and analyzed using VOSviewer and CiteSpace. RESULTS: A total of 2,723 articles were analyzed. DBT research has grown significantly since the 1990s, with the United States leading in publication volume, citation imp

Veterans regaining control; preliminary effects of inpatient Dialectical Behavior Therapy based PTSD treatment.

Introduction: Trauma-focused therapy (TFT) is highly effective in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, there is some evidence that TFT is less effective in specific groups, such as veterans and people with comorbid personality disorders, emotion regulation problems or substance use disorders.Aim: In this pre-post pilot study, we investigated feasibility and effectiveness of a 12-week veteran intensive treatment consisting of integrated Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and TFT, in Dutch veterans with PTSD, comorbid emotion regulation and/or substance use problems. Results: Self-repor

Feasibility and potential efficacy of radically open dialectical behavior therapy for anorexia nervosa.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a serious health condition with insufficient treatment options. Radically Open Dialectical Behavior Therapy (RO-DBT) offers a new treatment approach targeting maladaptive overcontrol, a proposed underlying mechanism in AN. This study evaluated the feasibility, acceptability, and the preliminary efficacy of a 32-week standard RO-DBT intervention for individuals with AN in an outpatient setting. Twenty-three participants with AN (median age 20 years; median illness duration 5 years; 95.7% female) were included. Feasibility was demonstrated by a high retention rate (83%)

Transdiagnostic skills training group of dialectical behavior therapy: a long-term naturalistic study.

INTRODUCTION: Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) has assembled a large body of evidence for the treatment of emotional dysregulation in borderline personality disorder (BPD), but also in other disorders characterized by emotional dysregulation (e.g., bipolar disorder (BD) and ADHD). Standalone skills learning groups address the problem of limited resources in several clinical settings. Furthermore, transdiagnostic skills groups facilitate the recruitment and decrease the scattering of resources in psychiatric settings. However, few studies have focused on the pertinence of transdiagnostic stan

Fluid intake behavior in women with refractory overactive bladder undergoing third line therapy.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Fluid intake has been shown to be related to urinary symptoms, but no studies to date have investigated the effect of fluid intake on urinary symptoms in women with refractory overactive bladder (OAB). As this group of women are considered to have a possible unique pathophysiologic mechanism of OAB, we investigated the relationship between fluid intake, fluid intake behavior, and urinary symptoms in women with refractory OAB. METHODS: A prospective cross-sectional study of women with refractory OAB was conducted by assessing the relationship between fluid intake a

Stress Hormones as Predictors of Response to Cognitive Behavior Therapy in Panic Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Data regarding the potential association between the outcome of psychotherapy of panic disorder (PD) and biological parameters are few. In 21 (16 females) consecutively referred, medication-free, acutely ill PD outpatients, without comorbidities, except agoraphobia, we systematically explored for potential neuroendocrine and clinical correlates of response to a brief cognitive behavior therapy (CBT). METHODS: Cortisol and adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) basal plasma levels were measured. Measures of psychopathology: (a) Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R), (b) Clinical Globa

Group transdiagnostic cognitive-behavior therapy for anxiety disorders: a pragmatic randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Transdiagnostic group cognitive-behavioral therapy (tCBT) is a delivery model that could help overcome barriers to large-scale implementation of evidence-based psychotherapy for anxiety disorders. The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of combining group tCBT with treatment-as-usual (TAU), compared to TAU, for the treatment of anxiety disorders in community-based mental health care. METHODS: In a multicenter single-blind, two-arm pragmatic superiority randomized trial, we recruited participants aged 18-65 who met DSM-5 criteria for principal diagnoses of generalized

Processes in cognitive behavior therapy for social anxiety disorder: Predicting subsequent symptom change.

Although cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) is an effective treatment for social anxiety disorder, little is known about the processes during treatment that bring about change. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the proposed processes of change according to the cognitive model of social anxiety disorder predicted subsequent symptom reduction in CBT delivered as therapist-guided bibliotherapy. We analyzed data from patients with social anxiety disorder (N = 61) who participated in an effectiveness trial of CBT in primary care. Seven putative processes and outcome (i.e., social anxie

FLUOXETINE THERAPY TO DECREASE STEREOTYPIC BEHAVIOR IN THE ASIATIC BLACK BEAR (URSUS THIBETANUS).

The present study evaluated the effects of fluoxetine on decreasing stereotypic behaviors in Asiatic black bears (ABB). Four captive ABB exhibiting stereotypic behaviors were administered fluoxetine (0.25-1 mg/ kg orally every 24 hr) for 91 days. The animals were monitored twice weekly for 213 days (April to October) using a scan sampling method (preadministration, 30 day; administration, 91 days; postadministration, 92 days). Five blood samples were collected from the jugular vein of each bear for serum chemistry analysis (one during preadministration; two each during administration and posta

Internet-delivered acceptance-based behavior therapy for generalized anxiety disorder: A pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: Internet-delivered cognitive behavior therapy (ICBT) has been developed and tested for treating persons with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). A new form of CBT focuses on acceptance (of internal experiences or difficult psychological content), mindfulness and valued actions. To date this form of CBT has not been delivered via the internet for persons with GAD. The aim of this study was to describe the functionality of a new internet-delivered acceptance-based behavior therapy for GAD, and to test the effect of the intervention in an open pilot trial. METHODS: Following exclusion

An Empirical Examination of Symptom Substitution Associated With Behavior Therapy for Tourette's Disorder.

Over the past six decades, behavior therapy has been a major contributor to the development of evidence-based psychotherapy treatments. However, a long-standing concern with behavior therapy among many nonbehavioral clinicians has been the potential risk for symptom substitution. Few studies have been conducted to evaluate symptom substitution in response to behavioral treatments, largely due to measurement and definitional challenges associated with treated psychiatric symptoms. Given the overt motor and vocal tics associated with Tourette's disorder, it presents an excellent opportunity to e

Cognitive behavior therapy for hoarding disorder: follow-up findings and predictors of outcome.

BACKGROUND: A cognitive-behavioral model of hoarding posits deficits in information processing, maladaptive beliefs about and attachments to possessions that provoke distress and avoidance, and positive emotional responses to saving and acquiring that reinforce these behaviors. A 26-session individual cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) based on this model showed significant reductions in hoarding symptoms and large effect sizes (Steketee et al.([1])). METHODS: The present study presents findings at follow-up (up to 12 months), as well as predictors of outcome at posttreatment (n = 37) and fol

Group cognitive behavior therapy for bipolar disorder can improve the quality of life.

Bipolar disorder (BD) can have an impact on psychosocial functioning and quality of life (QoL). Several studies have shown that structured psychotherapy in conjunction with pharmacotherapy may modify the course of some disorders; however, few studies have investigated the results of group cognitive behavior therapy (G-CBT) for BD. Our objective was to evaluate the effectiveness of 14 sessions of G-CBT for BD patients, comparing this intervention plus pharmacotherapy to treatment as usual (TAU; only pharmacotherapy). Forty-one patients with BD I and II participated in this study and were random

Testing the effectiveness of knowledge and behavior therapy in patients of hemiplegic stroke.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to examine demographic variables associated with anger and well-being in patients with stroke, to investigate the hypothesis that knowledge and behavior (K&B) therapy improves patients' emotional and physical well-being, and to discover psychological variables associated with therapeutic outcomes. METHODS: Seventy-seven patients with hemiplegic stroke were randomly assigned to either a control condition (the conventional therapy) or an experimental condition (K&B therapy). Both the experimental and control groups received physical therapy, which inclu

Virtual reality cognitive-behavior therapy for public speaking anxiety: one-year follow-up.

Public speaking anxiety (PSA) is a common social phobia. Although cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT) is the treatment of choice, difficulties arise with both in vivo and in vitro exposure (lack of therapist control, patient's inability to imagine, self-flooding, and a lack of confidentiality resulting from public exposure). Virtual reality CBT (VRCBT) enables a high degree of therapist control, thus overcoming these difficulties. In a previous publication, the authors reported on their findings that VRCBT (n = 28) and CBT (n = 30) groups were significantly more effective than a wait-list control

Changes in intolerance of uncertainty during cognitive behavior group therapy for social phobia.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Recent research suggests that intolerance of uncertainty (IU), most commonly associated with generalized anxiety disorder, also contributes to symptoms of social phobia. This study examines the relationship between IU and social anxiety symptoms across treatment. METHOD: Changes in IU, social anxiety symptoms, and depression symptoms were examined following cognitive behavior group therapy (CBGT) for social phobia (N=32). RESULTS: CBGT led to significant improvements in symptoms of social anxiety and depression, as well as reductions in IU. Reductions in IU were as
