Circadian rhythm disruption promotes M1 macrophages polarization exacerbating the inflammatory response in rosacea.

To explore the role of macrophage polarization induced by circadian rhythm disorder (CRD) in the aggravated inflammatory response of rosacea. The rosacesis-like animal model was established by intradermal injection of Cathelicidin antimicrobial peptide LL-37 (LL37) into the back of mice. HE staining, Western blot and immunofluorescence detection were used to investigate the effect of circadian rhythm disorder on the expression of inflammatory factors and macrophage polarization in rosacea. Overexpression of Brain and Muscle ARNT-Like 1 (Oe-Bmal1) was transfected into HaCaT cells and M0 macroph

Associations of Alpha and Beta Interhemispheric EEG Coherences with Indices of Attentional Control and Academic Performance.

UNLABELLED: Introduction. Heretofore, research on optimizing academic performance has suffered from an inability to translate what is known about an individual's learning behaviors to how effectively they are able to use the critical nodes and hubs in their cerebral cortex for learning. A previous study from our laboratory suggests that lower theta-beta ratios (TBRs) measured by EEG may be associated with higher academic performance in a medical school curriculum. METHODS: In this study, we tested the hypothesis that TBR and academic performance may be correlated with EEG coherence, a measure

Proactive control without midfrontal control signals? The role of midfrontal oscillations in preparatory conflict adjustments.

Successful motor control during behavioral conflicts relies on neural adjustments that can occur reactively (i.e., after conflict occurrence) and proactively (i.e., in preparation prior to conflicts). While midfrontal delta/theta oscillations are known to play a role for reactive control, their relevance for proactive control is unclear. Using EEG, we investigated the role of midfrontal oscillations during conflict preparation in a motor conflict task, where a predictive cue either indicated no or an increased likelihood for an action conflict. During conflict preparation, increased conflict l

Transcranial alternating current stimulation of α but not β frequency sharpens multiple visual functions.

BACKGROUND: Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) can entrain and enhance cortical oscillatory activity in a frequency-dependent manner. In our previous study (Nakazono et al., 2016), 20 Hz (β) tACS significantly increased excitability of primary motor cortex compared with 10 Hz (α) tACS. α oscillations are a prominent feature of the primary visual cortex (V1) in a resting electroencephalogram. Hence, we investigated whether α and β tACS can differentially influence multiple visual functions. METHODS: Firstly, we evaluated the after-effects of α and β tACS on pattern-reversal (P

Comparison of complex regional pain syndrome and fibromyalgia: Differences in beta and gamma bands on quantitative electroencephalography.

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) and fibromyalgia (FM) share many features. Both can cause severe pain and are considered to have a mechanism of action, including dysfunction of the sympathetic nervous system. However, they have clinical differences in pain range and degree. The present study aimed to find neurophysiologic differences between CRPS and FM using quantitative electroencephalography (QEEG). Thirty-eight patients with CRPS and 33 patients with FM were included in the analysis. Resting-state QEEG data were grouped into frontal, central, and posterior regions to analyze for regi

Delta-beta coupling is associated with paternal caregiving behaviors during preschool.

Neural systems that index self-regulation have been associated with mental health outcomes, including risk for anxiety problems, from early in life. Yet, little is known about the environmental factors that may impact the development of neural systems of regulation. Behavioral work suggests that sensitive parenting, or parents' ability to correctly interpret and respond to children's signals, supports the development of regulation. Conversely, harsh parenting, or uninvolved or punitive parent behaviors, is thought to compromise developing regulatory systems. We recorded preschoolers' baseline

[EEG effects of diazepam. Studies on 16 patients (author's transl)].

Recordings of the electrical activity of the brain were obtained by using conventional EEG and computerized EEG. Both methods of recording have been used as an indicator of the cerebral condition before and after intravenous premedication with Diazepam 20 mg. Two groups of patients were studied. The first group consisted of younger patients (Gr. A n = 8), the other of geriatric patients (Gr. B n = 8). Evaluation of EEG and CEEG was done by to experienced electroencephalographers separately. Interpretations of both methods were compared and found to correspond. In group A variations found in th

Aberrant Functional Connectivity and Brain Network Organization in High-Schizotypy Individuals: An Electroencephalography Study.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Oscillatory synchrony plays a crucial role in establishing functional connectivity across distinct brain regions. Within the realm of schizophrenia, suggested to be a neuropsychiatric disconnection syndrome, discernible aberrations arise in the organization of brain networks. We aim to investigate whether the resting-state functional network is already altered in healthy individuals with high schizotypy traits, highlighting the pivotal influence of brain rhythms in driving brain network alterations. STUDY DESIGN: Two-minute resting-state electroencephalography recor

Post-movement beta rebound abnormality as indicator of mirror neuron system dysfunction in autistic spectrum disorder: an MEG study.

The mu rhythm is regarded as a physiological indicator of the human mirror neuron system (MNS). The dysfunctional MNS hypothesis in patients with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) has often been tested using EEG and MEG, targeting mu rhythm suppression during action observation/execution, although with controversial results. We explored neural activity related to the MNS in patients with ASD, focusing on power increase in the beta frequency band after observation and execution of movements, known as post-movement beta rebound (PMBR). Multiple source beamformer (MSBF) and BrainVoyager QX were us

Gamma and beta bursts during working memory readout suggest roles in its volitional control.

Working memory (WM) activity is not as stationary or sustained as previously thought. There are brief bursts of gamma (~50-120 Hz) and beta (~20-35 Hz) oscillations, the former linked to stimulus information in spiking. We examined these dynamics in relation to readout and control mechanisms of WM. Monkeys held sequences of two objects in WM to match to subsequent sequences. Changes in beta and gamma bursting suggested their distinct roles. In anticipation of having to use an object for the match decision, there was an increase in gamma and spiking information about that object and reduced bet

Posterior resting state EEG asymmetries are associated with hedonic valuation of food.

Research on the hedonic value of food has been important in understanding the motivational and emotional correlates of normal and abnormal eating behaviour. The aim of the present study was to explore associations between hemispheric asymmetries recorded during resting state electroencephalogram (EEG) and hedonic valuation of food. Healthy adult volunteers were recruited and four minutes of resting state EEG were recorded from the scalp. Hedonic food valuation and reward sensitivity were assessed with the hedonic attitude to food and behavioural activation scale. Results showed that parieto-oc

Decoupling the actions of the eyes from the hand alters beta and gamma synchrony within SPL.

Eye-hand coordination is crucial for our ability to interact with the world around us. However, much of the visually guided reaches that we perform require a spatial decoupling between gaze direction and hand orientation. These complex decoupled reaching movements are in contrast to more standard eye and hand reaching movements in which the eyes and the hand are coupled. The superior parietal lobule (SPL) receives converging eye and hand signals; however, what is yet to be understood is how the activity within this region is modulated during decoupled eye and hand reaches. To address this, we

[Compressive-spectral analysis of EEG in patients with panic attacks in the context of different psychiatric diseases].

Panic disorders (PD) which develop in the context of different psychiatric diseases (neurotic, personality disorder and schizotypal disorders) have their own clinical and neurophysiological features. The results of compressive-spectral analysis of EEG (CSA EEG) in patients with panic attack were different depending on the specifics of initial psychiatric status. EEG parameters in patients differed from those in controls. The common feature for all PD patients was the lower spectral density of theta-, alpha- and beta-bands as well as total spectral density without any alterations of region dist

Hemispheric lateralization of the EEG during wakefulness and REM sleep in young healthy adults.

EEG recordings confirm hemispheric lateralization of brain activity during cognitive tasks. The aim of the present study was to investigate spontaneous EEG lateralization under two conditions, waking and REM sleep. Bilateral monopolar EEG was recorded in eight participants using a 12-electrode montage, before the night (5 min eyes closed) and during REM sleep. Spectral analysis (0.75-19.75 Hz) revealed left prefrontal lateralization on total spectrum amplitude power and right occipital lateralization in Delta activity during waking. In contrast, during REM sleep, right frontal lateralization i

Voltage-sensitive dye mapping in Langendorff-perfused rat hearts.

An imaging system suitable for recordings from Langendorff-perfused rat hearts using the voltage-sensitive dye 4-[beta-[2-(di-n-butylamino)-6-naphthyl]vinyl]pyridinium (di-4-ANEPPS) has been developed. Conduction velocity was measured under hyper- and hypokalemic conditions, as well as at physiological and reduced temperature. Elevation of extracellular [K(+)] to 9 mM from 5.9 mM caused a slowing of conduction velocity from 0.66 +/- 0.08 to 0.43 +/- 0.07 mm/ms (35%), and reduction of the temperature to 32 degrees C from 37 degrees C caused a slowing from 0.64 +/- 0.07 to 0.46 +/- 0.05 mm/ms (2

[Heart rhythm disorders and blood rehology in ischemic heart disease].

Blood rheology was studied in 92 patients with ischemic heart disease having cardiac rhythm disorders. The syndrome of high blood viscosity and increased blood platelets aggregation were observed in paroxysmal tachycardia. In patients suffering from myocardial infarction with arrhythmia there was noted higher blood viscosity and more intensive blood platelet aggregation than in atherosclerotic cardiosclerosis. Treatment of paroxysmal tachycardia by means of electric impulse and agents blocking beta-adrenergic receptors results in a decrease of blood viscosity, the blood platelets aggregation i

P2Y1 receptor modulation of the pre-Bötzinger complex inspiratory rhythm generating network in vitro.

ATP is released during hypoxia from the ventrolateral medulla (VLM) and activates purinergic P2 receptors (P2Rs) at unknown loci to offset the secondary hypoxic depression of breathing. In this study, we used rhythmically active medullary slices from neonatal rat to map, in relation to anatomical and molecular markers of the pre-Bötzinger complex (preBötC) (a proposed site of rhythm generation), the effects of ATP on respiratory rhythm and identify the P2R subtypes responsible for these actions. Unilateral microinjections of ATP in a three-dimensional grid within the VLM revealed a "hotspot" w

Differential oscillatory electroencephalogram between attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder subtypes and typically developing adolescents.

BACKGROUND: A neurobiological-based classification of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) subtypes has thus far remained elusive. The aim of this study was to use oscillatory changes in the electroencephalogram (EEG) related to informative cue processing, motor preparation, and top-down control to investigate neurophysiological differences between typically developing (TD) adolescents, and those diagnosed with predominantly inattentive (IA) or combined (CB) (associated with symptoms of inattention as well as impulsivity/hyperactivity) subtypes of ADHD. METHODS: The EEG was recorde
