Investigating effects of alcohol-related breast cancer warnings and binge-drinking frequency on alcohol consumption intentions among young adult female participants in the United States.

Awareness of alcohol consumption as a breast cancer risk remains limited among young adult women in the USA. This experiment (N = 1038) examined how female young adults aged 18-29 reporting past 30-day alcohol consumption responded to health warnings about the risk of alcohol for developing breast cancer. Structural equation modeling assessed associations between health warning exposure, binge-drinking frequency, negative affect, perceived threat of alcohol harms and behavioral intentions to reduce or stop drinking alcohol and seek information about alcohol health effects. Results found that e

Ethanol binge drinking exposure during adolescence displays long-lasting motor dysfunction related to cerebellar neurostructural damage even after long-term withdrawal in female Wistar rats.

Ethanol is one of the psychoactive substances most used by young individuals, usually in an intermittent and episodic manner, also called binge drinking. In the adolescent period, brain structures undergo neuromaturation, which increases the vulnerability to psychotropic substances. Our previous studies have revealed that ethanol binge drinking during adolescence elicits neurobehavioral alterations associated with brain damage. Thus, we explored the persistence of motor function impairment and cerebellum damage in the context of ethanol withdrawal periods (emerging adulthood and adult life) in

Affective dynamics surrounding craving, non-heavy alcohol use and binge drinking in female patients with alcohol use disorder and controls: An experience sampling method study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Studies show that higher levels of positive affect (PA) and lower levels of negative affect (NA) are related to craving and alcohol consumption at a daily level in men, but little is known on these associations at a momentary level, and whether they are present in women. This study measured the dynamics of within-person NA and PA surrounding craving, non-heavy alcohol use and binge drinking in women with alcohol use disorder (AUD) and female controls without AUD. METHODS: 53 female patients with AUD and 75 female controls, all recruited in Belgium, were included in an exp

Preclinical Evaluation of Sodium Butyrate's Potential to Reduce Alcohol Consumption: A Dose-Escalation Study in C57BL/6J Mice in Antibiotic-Enhanced Binge-Like Drinking Model.

INTRODUCTION: In our earlier efforts to establish gut-brain axis during alcohol use disorder (AUD), we have demonstrated that supplementation of C57BL/6J male mice with 8 mg/mL sodium butyrate, a major short-chain fatty acid, in drinking water reduced ethanol intake and neuroinflammatory response in antibiotic (ABX)-enhanced voluntary binge-like alcohol consumption model, drinking in the dark (DID). METHODS: To further evaluate the preclinical potential of SB, we have set a dose-escalation study in C57BL/6J male mice to test effects of ad libitum 20 mg/mL SB and 50 mg/mL SB and their combinat

Home cage voluntary alcohol consumption increases binge drinking without affecting abstinence-related depressive-like behaviors or operant responding in crossed high alcohol-preferring mice (cHAPs).

Chronic alcohol consumption can lead to tolerance and escalation of drinking in humans and animals, but mechanisms underlying these changes are not fully characterized. Preclinical models can delineate which mechanisms are involved. The chronic intermittent ethanol exposure (CIE) procedure uses forced exposure to vaporized alcohol that elicits withdrawal and increased responding for alcohol in operant tasks in C57BL/6J inbred mice. Chronic two-bottle choice (2BC) drinking in the same strain elicits abstinent-related depression-like behavior, suggestive of allostatic changes. Selected lines suc

Executive functioning-specific behavioral impairments in a rat model of human third trimester binge drinking implicate prefrontal-thalamo-hippocampal circuitry in Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders.

Individuals diagnosed with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) often display behavioral impairments in executive functioning (EF). Specifically, the domains of working memory, inhibition, and set shifting are frequently impacted by prenatal alcohol exposure. Coordination between prefrontal cortex and hippocampus appear to be essential for these domains of executive functioning. The current study uses a rodent model of human third-trimester binge drinking to identify the extent of persistent executive functioning deficits following developmental alcohol by using a behavioral battery of hipp

Bupropion, Alone and in Combination with Naltrexone, Blunts Binge-Like Ethanol Drinking and Intake Following Chronic Intermittent Access to Ethanol in Male C57BL/6J Mice.

BACKGROUND: Regular binge drinking is associated with numerous adverse consequences, yet the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved only 4 medications for the treatment of alcohol use disorders, and none have been specifically targeted for treating binge drinking. Here, we assessed the effectiveness of the dopamine/norepinephrine re-uptake inhibitor, bupropion (BUP), alone and in combination with naltrexone (NAL), to reduce binge-like and chronic ethanol (EtOH) intake in mice. While BUP is an FDA-approved drug that is currently used to treat depression and nicotine dependence, th

Effects of Repeated Binge Drinking on Blood Pressure Levels and Other Cardiovascular Health Metrics in Young Adults: National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2011-2014.

BACKGROUND: Binge drinking prevalence rates are highest in young adults; however, little is known about the effects of binge drinking on blood pressure (BP) and other cardiovascular health metrics in individuals between 18 and 45 years of age. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of regular binge drinking on BP, lipid and glucose levels and to determine if there were differences in these associations between men and women. METHODS AND RESULTS: We analyzed data from NHANES (the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey) for men and women 18 to 45 years old who were non-

Trends in college binge drinking during a period of increased prevention efforts. Findings from 4 Harvard School of Public Health College Alcohol Study surveys: 1993-2001.

The 2001 Harvard School of Public Health College Alcohol Study surveyed students at 119 4-year colleges that participated in the 1993, 1997, and 1999 studies. Responses in the 4 survey years were compared to determine trends in heavy alcohol use, alcohol-related problems, and encounters with college and community prevention efforts. In 2001, approximately 2 in 5 (44.4%) college students reported binge drinking, a rate almost identical to rates in the previous 3 surveys. Very little change in overall binge drinking occurred at the individual college level. The percentages of abstainers and freq

ALCOhol use, Norms, Identities and Motivations-based (ALCONIM) prevention program for binge drinking among college students: a study protocol for a parallel-group randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Binge drinking (BD) refers to repeated switches between intense and short intoxication as well as periods of abstinence. Subjective norms, drinking identity and social and enhancement motives are found to be the most dominant determinants of BD in college students. Targeting these psychosocial factors could be of public health interest in this population, in which up to one out of five students would practice BD. The purpose of our study is to evaluate the efficacy of brief BD determinants-focused procedures, namely, hypocrisy induction (HI), social identity mapping (SIM) and motiv

Does binge drinking mediate the relationship between four adverse childhood experiences and adult traumatic brain injury? Results from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979 Cohort.

OBJECTIVE: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with increased risk of sustaining a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Alcohol use may play an important role in this relationship. This study examines whether binge drinking mediates the relationship between four ACEs and TBIs sustained in adulthood. METHODS: Using the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, 1979 cohort, we conducted longitudinal mediation analyses (n=6317). Interviews occurred annually from 1979 to 1994 and biennially until 2016. We evaluated the direct and indirect effects of individual ACEs (ie, experiencing physica

Folic acid antioxidant supplementation to binge drinking adolescent rats improves hydric-saline balance and blood pressure, but fails to increase renal NO availability and glomerular filtration rate.

Binge drinking (BD) is an especially pro-oxidant pattern of alcohol consumption, particularly widespread in the adolescent population. In the kidneys, it affects the glomerular filtration rate (GFR), leading to high blood pressure. BD exposure also disrupts folic acid (FA) homeostasis and its antioxidant properties. The aim of this study is to test a FA supplementation as an effective therapy against the oxidative, nitrosative, and apoptotic damage as well as the renal function alteration occurred after BD in adolescence. Four groups of adolescent rats were used: control, BD (exposed to intrap

Corticotropin-Releasing Factor Modulates Binge-Like Ethanol Drinking in a Sex-Dependent Manner: Impact of Amygdala Deletion and Inhibition of a Central Amygdala to Lateral Hypothalamus Circuit.

BACKGROUND: Binge alcohol drinking is a dangerous behavior that can contribute to the development of more severe alcohol use disorder. Importantly, the rate and severity of alcohol use disorder has historically differed between men and women, suggesting that there may be sex differences in the central mechanisms that modulate alcohol (ethanol) consumption. Corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) is a centrally expressed neuropeptide that has been implicated in the modulation of binge-like ethanol intake, and emerging data highlight sex differences in CRF systems. METHODS: In the current report,

Perceptions surpass reality: Self-reported alcohol-related communication on Instagram is more strongly related with frequency of alcohol consumption and binge drinking than actual alcohol-related communication.

Mounting research finds that sharing alcohol references on social media is related to higher levels of alcohol consumption. The present study aims to improve our understanding of potential biases when using self-report measures, to provide more insight in the differences between background and foreground alcohol references, and to examine different drinking patterns. We examined the Instagram profiles of 128 Belgian college students (Mage = 21.31, SD = 1.50; 64.8 % women) and compared how the observed number of pictures depicting alcohol in the background or in the foreground as well as self-r

Age of Initiation of Dual Tobacco Use and Binge Drinking among Youth (12-17 Years Old): Findings from the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study.

Earlier exposure to binge drinking and tobacco use is associated with higher odds of substance use disorders. Using national youth data from the PATH study, we prospectively estimate the age of initiating past 30-day use of (1) cigarettes, e-cigarettes, and binge drinking, and (2) cigarettes, cigarillos, and binge drinking. Cox proportional hazard models were used to estimate differences in the age of initiation by sex, race/ethnicity, and previous use of other tobacco products. By age 21, 4.4% (95% CI: 3.7-5.2) and 2.0% (95% CI: 1.2-2.8) of youth reported initiation of past 30-day use outcome

Orexinergic lateral hypothalamus (LH) projections to medial septum (MS) modulate ethanol-induced sedation in male and female mice and binge-like ethanol drinking in male mice only.

Orexin in both the lateral hypothalamus (LH) and medial septum (MS) is involved in sleep- and consciousness-related conditions. Since orexin modulates the intoxicating as well as rewarding effects of ethanol, this study focused on the role of orexin-projecting neurons from the LH to the MS, and this neurocircuit's role in mediating the sedative effects of alcohol. Drinking-in-the-Dark (DID) behavior was also assessed as a measure of the role of the LH-MS pathway in modulating binge-like ethanol intake, with a particular focus on sex differences in both behavioral paradigms. Male and female Hcr

Insulin resistance as a mediator of the association between obesity, high-intensity binge drinking, and liver enzyme abnormalities in young and middle-aged adults: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Binge drinking (BD) and obesity are well-established risk factors for liver enzyme abnormalities, but how varying intensities of BD interact with obesity to affect liver function remains unclear. This study aims to examine whether insulin resistance (IR) mediates the associations between different levels of BD, obesity, their interaction, and liver enzyme abnormalities. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 137,878 young and middle-aged adults who underwent physical examinations in southern China between August 2017 and March 2024. BD was self-reported, and IR was assessed

Researching Mitigation of Alcohol Binge Drinking in Polydrug Abuse: KCNK13 and RASGRF2 Gene(s) Risk Polymorphisms Coupled with Genetic Addiction Risk Severity (GARS) Guiding Precision Pro-Dopamine Regulation.

Excessive alcohol intake, e.g., binge drinking, is a serious and mounting public health problem in the United States and throughout the world. Hence the need for novel insights into the underlying neurobiology that may help improve prevention and therapeutic strategies. Therefore, our group employed a darkness-induced alcohol intake protocol to define the reward deficiency domains of alcohol and other substance use disorders in terms of reward pathways' reduced dopamine signaling and its restoration via specifically-designed therapeutic compounds. It has been determined that KCNK13 and RASGRF2

Examination of age- and sex-related changes in protein expression within the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex during withdrawal from a subchronic history of binge-drinking in C57BL/6J mice.

INTRODUCTION: Early-onset binge-drinking and biological sex are critical risk factors for the development of cognitive decline and neurodegeneration associated with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRDs). Recently, we demonstrated that a prior history of binge-drinking during adolescence induces what appears to be latent (>6 months post-drinking) changes in the expression of glutamate receptors and neuropathology markers within brain regions governing working and spatial memory, many of which precede the manifestation of overt cognitive anomalies. METHODS: To determine whether alco
