Motivated by the need for a convenient way to demonstrate the growth of crystals in glass plates by the lipid cubic phase method at crystallization workshops and courses, we developed a lightweight, portable, compact and inexpensive digital microscope device. The device is built around hand-held Wi-Fi and hardwired digital microscopes that are available commercially at low cost and that can use cell phones and personal computers for imaging without the need for unwieldy eyepieces. The device provides illumination from above and below the crystallization plate over a range of brightness levels.

The clinical and neuropathologic findings in 11 cases with intracerebral hemorrhages related to CAA were reported. Their age ranged from 45 to 79 years, the average being 61.8 years. Colorless crystals of Cd(SCN)(l-C3H6NO2) (1) and Cd(SCN)(l-C5H9N2O3)·H2O (2) were grown under mild reaction environments. The two inorganic-organic hybrid compounds adopt one-dimensional structural motifs, wherein cadmium thiocyanate chains are interconnected by l-alanine and l-glutamine ligands, respectively. Both compounds feature wide optical bandgaps and sufficient birefringent values. Notably, compound 1 displays a second-harmonic generation (SHG) intensity of 0.5 × KH2PO4, whereas compound 2 exhibits a remarkably enhanced SHG response of 2.0 × KH2PO4.

Breast tissue obtained from 18 of 246 women (7.3%) having localization biopsy for microcalcification contained crystals of Weddellite (calcium oxalate dihydrate). This was the case of a 21-year-old woman with longstanding photosensitivity who developed progressive jaundice and liver dysfunction. The initial workup excluded common hepatobiliary and autoimmune causes. PURPOSE: To report the clinicopathologic features of a case of conjunctival synthetic fiber granuloma.
CASE REPORT: A 6-year-old girl presented with a slow-growing red nodule in the right inferior conjunctival sac with no history of surgery or trauma. Histopathological examination revealed foreign body type granulomatous inflammation around birefringent fibers of variable colors consistent with synthetic fiber granuloma.
CONCLUSION: This is the first case report of synthetic fiber (teddy bear) conjunctival granuloma from Iran. Despite its scarcity, ophthalmologists should consider this type

The differential diagnosis of bone marrow granulomas is lengthy but has not previously included coal workers' pneumoconiosis. This report describes the first case in which noncaseating epithelioid granulomas containing anthracotic pigment and birefringent silica containing crystals were discovered in the marrow of a patient with progressive massive fibrosis of coal workers' pneumoconiosis.
