OBJECTIVE: The authors explored the association between abuse of 3, 4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA, or "Ecstasy") and high-risk sexual behaviors among gay and bisexual men.
METHOD: An anonymous questionnaire was completed by 169 gay and bisexual men at three New York City dance clubs. The questionnaire covered demographic indices, use of MDMA and other drugs, and history of high-risk sexual behaviors.
RESULTS: About one-third of the respondents reported MDMA use at least monthly. MDMA use was strongly and significantly associated with a history of recent unprotected anal intercourse.

OBJECTIVES: This study was done to compare risk factors for HIV/STDs in women who reported having had sex with both men and women and women who reported having had sex with men only.
METHODS: Female participants in a multisite, randomized HIV/STD prevention study in the Seattle area reported both having had sex with a man in the 3 months before and having at least 1 risk factor for HIV/STDs during the year before the study. Of these women, 38% who reported ever having had sex with a woman were compared with those who reported having had sex with men only.
RESULTS: Women who had had sex with

OBJECTIVES: Factors mediating changes in sexual behaviors that increase the risk of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection were monitored in a group of gay and bisexual male adolescents.
METHODS: One hundred thirty-six males aged 14 to 19 years (Hispanic, 51%; African-American, 31%) were recruited from one gay-identified agency, were assessed at four points over a 1-year period, and participated in HIV preventive intervention sessions.
RESULTS: Significant reductions occurred in the number of unprotected same-sex anal and oral acts. Those with less risk in their previous sexual history

From May 1989 through April 1990, 1,001 adult homosexual and bisexual men attending urban sexually transmitted disease clinics were interviewed regarding abusive sexual contacts during childhood and adolescence. Sexual abuse was found to be significantly associated with mental health counseling and hospitalization, psychoactive substance use, depression, suicidal thought or actions, social support, sexual identity development, HIV risk behavior including unprotected and intercourse and injecting drug use, and risk of sexually transmitted diseases including HIV infection. Data suggest that sexu

The causal agent of Kaposi's sarcoma is unknown. That the disorder is ten times more common in homosexual or bisexual men with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) than in other human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmission groups suggests that a certain aspect of their behaviour exposes them to the agent or facilitates its spread. We therefore assessed social and demographic characteristics, including sexual behaviour, of 65 homosexual or bisexual men with AIDS from London. Sexual practices in which there was contact with partner's faeces before AIDS developed were the main determi

Although treatment of HIV infections is possible, anecdotal data and research suggest that infected homosexual and bisexual men are developing sets of HIV-specific self-care behaviors that they believe will maintain their health or delay progressive disease. However, little is known about frequent use of HIV self-care in relationship to symptom distress or other factors commonly assessed by nurses. These deficits limit the ability of healthcare providers to intervene appropriately. Consequently, the following repeated-measures study retrospectively examined correlates of HIV self-care in 162 o

A survey of reproductive system problems was conducted in a large group of lesbians (n = 1,921) and bisexual women (n = 424) in a nonclinical setting. Demographically the groups were similar: the majority of respondents were white, urban and well educated. A history of heterosexual coitus was common in both groups (bisexuals, 95%; lesbians, 77%). Bisexuals were more likely than lesbians to report an abnormal Papanicolaou smear, cystitis, genital herpes, gonorrhea and vaginal infections. When sexual orientation was controlled for, most, but not all, of these differences were associated with a d

Research suggests that microaggressions may contribute to well-documented health disparities among bisexual men. The microaggressions typology framework may provide insights into how microaggressions are conveyed, complementing thematic studies that capture what microaggressions communicate. This study examined the microaggressions encountered by 31 bisexual men (24 cisgender, 7 transgender; 14 Black, 8 Latino, 5 multiracial, 3 White, 1 Asian) using semi-structured interviews. Results indicate that bisexual men primarily experience microinvalidations (nullifications of their experiences), incl

Chemsex is defined as the use of psychoactive substances - most commonly methamphetamine, synthetic cathinones, and Gamma-hydroxybutyrate/Gamma butyrolactone (GHB/GBL) - to enhance sexual activity primarily among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBM). It is associated with higher rates of sexually transmitted infections, HIV, and mental health conditions. However, despite substantial public health concerns regarding rising overdose deaths, the relationship between chemsex and overdose remains poorly studied. In this perspective, we synthesize the current evidence, identify c

BACKGROUND: Sexualized drug use among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBM) remains underexplored in Latin America. This study investigated perspectives on sexualized drug use among GBM living with HIV in Colombia, including Venezuelan migrants, through a harm-reduction lens.
METHODS: Between October 2024 and April 2025, we conducted semi-structured interviews with GBM living with HIV across Colombia. Thematic analysis was employed to identify patterns related to practices, meanings, and perceived health system responses to sexualized drug use among participants.

The Asian longhorned tick (Haemaphysalis longicornis) is an ectoparasite that transmits several pathogens, including severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus, to humans and animals. Wild populations of H. longicornis are maintained by both bisexual and asexual reproductive strategies. This study examined the geographical distribution and genetic differentiation of bisexual and parthenogenetic H. longicornis populations collected from 12 cities across the Republic of Korea: Chuncheon (CC), Sokcho (SC), Samcheok (SCH), Ganghwa (GH), Sangju (SJ), Ulsan (US), Jinju (JNJ), Boryeong (BR), G

Previous research has suggested that scores generated using a sexual orientation Implicit Relational Assessment Procedure (IRAP) correlate with self-reported sexual orientation in gay and heterosexual men and have a strong ability to differentiate the two groups (Timmins et al., 2016). The present study sought to replicate this work and to determine how a range of groups that differ in terms of self-reported sexual orientation perform on the measure. Lesbian/gay, heterosexual, and bisexual women (n = 99) and men (n = 96) completed a sexual orientation IRAP and self-report measures of sexual at

Based on the theory of normative social behavior, this research investigated the moderating role of three forms of sexual stigma - enacted, felt, and internalized - in the relationship between perceived descriptive norms and intentions of gay and bisexual men to engage in three preventive behaviors during the 2022 mpox outbreak in the U.S. Through an online survey conducted among 439 gay and bisexual men in September 2022, we observed that participants' perceived descriptive norms regarding mpox preventive behaviors among gay and bisexual male friends and among gay and bisexual men in general

When evaluating reproductive care for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer+ patients, there are multiple factors that must be addressed from a clinician, clinic, and social standpoint. Clinicians should be trained in culturally humble and trauma-informed care; clinics should have intake forms that identify sexual orientation, gender identity, and pronouns. The clinic environment should be inclusive, with all gender or single-stall bathrooms, and patient-facing educational materials that are representative of individuals with diverse partnerships, races, and ethnicities. In order to p

Gay and bisexual men (GBM) report higher rates of sexualised and injecting drug use (IDU) than heterosexual men. Injecting-related stigma is linked to negative health outcomes among people who inject drugs (PWID). This paper describes the ways in which stigmatisation manifests in the narratives of GBM who inject drugs. We conducted in-depth interviews with Australian GBM with IDU histories, exploring drug use, pleasure, risk, and relationality. Data were analysed using discourse analytical approaches. Interviewees (n = 19), aged 24-60 years, narrated their experiences of IDU practice over 2-32

PURPOSE: To evaluate and quantify the character and amount of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ +) content on sperm, oocyte, and embryo provider websites in the USA.
METHODS: Websites with LGBTQ + information were categorized into "minimal," "moderate," and "significant" content. The presence and type (category) of LGBTQ + content were assessed in its relationship to geographic regions, in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycles/year, and website types. Interobserver reliability was assessed for the categorization system created.
RESULTS: Out of 373 unique websites, 191 (51.2%)

BACKGROUND: Despite recent significant strides toward acceptance, inclusion, and equality, members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) community still face alarming mental health disparities, being almost 3 times more likely to experience depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts than their heterosexual counterparts. These unique psychological challenges are due to discrimination, stigmatization, and identity-related struggles and can potentially benefit from generative conversational artificial intelligence (AI). As the latest advancement in AI, conversational agent

BACKGROUNDS: Positive attitudes toward human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) treatment, such as reduced concern about HIV transmissibility, are associated with sexual behaviors that may increase the risk of bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBM). We examined associations between HIV treatment attitudes and bacterial STI diagnoses among GBM in Canada's three largest cities.
METHODS: We fit a structural equation model between HIV treatment attitudes and bacterial STI diagnoses via sexual behaviors in the Engage study's baseli

BACKGROUND: Injecting drug use is purportedly more common among gay and bisexual men (GBM) than the general Australian population. Approaches designed to support the wellbeing of people who inject drugs may not be effective for GBM who inject, due to divergent settings, substances, and/or symbolism. We sought to identify the critical elements shaping injecting among GBM as a social practice and the implications for health and psychosocial wellbeing.
METHODS: We conducted 19 in-depth interviews with GBM in Australia with lifetime experience of injecting drug use, adopting the Frameworks Method
