Influence of opioids on central thermoregulatory mechanisms.

Of the effects of morphine and endogenous opioid peptides on thermoregulation, the one which is most likely to be of physiologic significance is hyperthermia. This increase in body temperature is the result of coordinated changes in both physiological and behavioral thermoregulatory activities and, like fever, reflects an increase in the level about which body temperature is regulated. Morphine, endogenous opioid peptides and other opioids such as pentazocine all cause hyperthermia, but the considerable variation in the dose of naloxone required to antagonize the different agonists indicates t

Inhibition of type 4 cAMP-phosphodiesterases (PDE4s) in mice induces hypothermia via effects on behavioral and central autonomous thermoregulation.

Inhibitors of Type 4 cAMP-phosphodiesterases (PDE4s) exert a number of promising therapeutic benefits, including potent anti-inflammatory, memory- and cognition-enhancing, metabolic, and antineoplastic effects. We report here that treatment with a number of distinct PDE4 inhibitors, including Rolipram, Piclamilast, Roflumilast and RS25344, but not treatment with the PDE3-selective inhibitor Cilostamide, induces a rapid (10-30 min), substantial (-5 °C) and long-lasting (up to 5 h) decrease in core body temperature of C57BL/6 mice; thus, identifying a critical role of PDE4 also in the regulation

Dysfunction of thermoregulation contributes to the generation of hyperthermia-induced seizures.

Febrile seizures (FS) are generally defined as seizures taking place during fever. Long-term prognosis, including development of epilepsy and malformation of cognitive function, has been demonstrated after infantile FS. However, the mechanism that triggers seizures in hyperthermic environment is still unclear. We here found that the body temperature of rat pups that experienced experimental FS was markedly decreased (∼28°C) after they were removed from the hyperthermic environment. Both the seizure generation and the temperature drop after seizure attack were abolished by either pre-treatment

Perspiration vapor lightens near-skin air, but hinders human evaporative cooling in arid heat.

Sweat evaporation is the body's primary cooling mechanism, yet the physical factors governing it are not fully understood. We identify a "dueling buoyancy" effect in the context of the human body, in which perspiration vapor reduces the near-skin air density, counteracting the downward flow driven by cooling of warm air upon contact with the skin. In hot, arid, stagnant environments, this opposing buoyancy suppresses free convection and can reduce sweat evaporation by more than half. As a result, commonly used thermoregulation models can substantially underpredict body temperature (e.g., by 1°

Behavioural thermoregulation in the Australian fur seal (Arctocephalus pusillus doriferus).

Physiological and behavioural adaptations shape an animal's thermoregulatory capacity. Pinnipeds - true seals (phocids), eared seals (otariids, including fur seals and sea lions), and walruses (Odobenids) - must thermoregulate in both aquatic and terrestrial environments. Fur seals are unique, relying on dense, water-repellent fur and moderate blubber for insulation, while true seals, sea lions, and walruses have lower fur densities and thicker blubber. Fur traps air when wet to reduce heat loss at sea, but its insulating properties when dry on land, along with those of furless flippers, remai

Prehospital Use of Ultrathin Reflective Foils.

Ultrathin reflective foils (URFs) are widely used to protect patients from heat loss, but there is no clear evidence that they are effective. We review the physics of thermal insulation by URFs and discuss their clinical applications. A conventional view is that the high reflectivity of the metallic side of the URF is responsible for thermal protection. In most circumstances, the heat radiated from a well-clothed body is minimal and the reflecting properties of a URF are relatively insignificant. The reflection of radiant heat can be impaired by condensation and freezing of the moisture on the

Energy efficiency of respiration in mature and newborn reindeer.

Reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) have evolved elaborate nasal turbinate structures that are perfused via a complex vascular network. These are subject to thermoregulatory control, shifting between heat conservation and dissipation, according to the animal's needs. The three-dimensional design of the turbinate structures is essential in the sense that they determine the efficiency with which heat and water are transferred between the structure and the respired air. The turbinates have already a relatively large surface area at birth, but the structures have yet not reached the complexity of the mat

The influence of drink temperature on thermoregulatory responses during prolonged exercise in a moderate environment.

Nine males cycled at 53% (s = 2) of their peak oxygen uptake (VO(2peak)) for 90 min (dry bulb temperature: 25.4 degrees C, s = 0.2; relative humidity: 61%, s = 3). One litre of flavoured water at 10 (cold), 37 (warm) or 50 degrees C (hot) was ingested 30 - 40 min into exercise. Immediately after the 90 min of exercise, participants cycled at 95%VO(2peak) to exhaustion to assess exercise capacity. Rectal and mean skin temperatures and heart rate were recorded. The gradient of rise in rectal temperature was influenced (P < 0.01) by drink temperature. Mean skin temperature was highest in the hot

An index of the environmental thermal load imposed on exercising horses and riders by hot weather conditions.

There is a need to determine objectively the environmental heat load imposed on horses competing to an international standard in 3-day-events in environments where there is likely to be a high level of radiation added to high ambient temperatures and relative humidity; the presently used FEI 'Comfort Index' is severely limited in its applicability. It is proposed that the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) Index be used. This index was originally established for man exercising strenuously under harsh climatic conditions with high solar radiation levels. It may be defined as: WBGT = 0.7Twb + 0.3

Diurnal variation of thermal resistance in rats.

Effects of photoperiod on heat resistance were studied in 88 rats by observing their survival times in a hot environment (42.5 degrees C). Prior to the experiments individual rats were exposed to a given heat (42.5 degrees C) at a definite time of day and a "predicted survival time" in a given heat in individual rats was obtained. Rats were then divided into eight groups (with nine rats in each group) so as to ensure intergroup homogeneity regarding their predicted survival time and were exposed to heat at different times of day (every 3 h) until they were exhausted. It was found that the heat

Higher and bigger: How riparian bats react to climate change.

The altitudinal distribution of animals and changes in their body size are effective indicators of climate change. Bats are sensitive to climate change due to their dependence on temperature during critical life stages. However, long-term studies documenting responses over extended periods are rare. We present a 24-year investigation of Myotis daubentonii, a riparian bat known for altitudinal sexual segregation, along a river course in Central Italy. While males occupy the entire river course, females are confined to downstream warmer areas supporting successful reproduction due to improved fo

Numerical investigation of the convective heat transfer coefficient for a sleeping infant in a ventilation room.

This study aimed to investigate the influence of wind speed and direction on the convective heat transfer from a sleeping infant in different postures. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model of a virtual infant manikin with realistic dimensions was developed to obtain the convective heat transfer coefficient (hc ) at the body surface and the airflow and temperature distributions. The numerical model was validated beforehand using experimental data collected from infant thermal manikin experiments. The simulation results revealed that the infant's whole-body hc increased from 4.00 to 15.73

Differences in the thermal properties and surface temperature of prehospital antihypothermia devices: an in vitro study.

BACKGROUND: Preventing and treating hypothermia in prehospital settings is crucial. Several products have been developed to prevent heat loss and actively warm patients in prehospital settings. We compared the efficacy and the surface temperature of different antihypothermia products, using a fluid-based model at two ambient temperatures. METHODS: We tested five active (Blizzard Heat with active pads, Ready-Heat, Ready-Heat-II, Hypothermia Prevention and Management Kit (HPMK), Bair Hugger) and five passive (Blizzard Heat, Heat Reflective Shell, sleeping bag, 'space blanket', wool blanket) ant

Hydration and Cooling Strategies for Paralympic Athletes : Applied Focus: Challenges Athletes May Face at the Upcoming Tokyo Paralympics.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Effective thermoregulation is paramount for optimizing athletic performance and minimizing the risk of heat illness when exercising, especially in hot conditions. Para-athletes can face unique challenges in regard to thermoregulation and hydration, especially when travel is involved. RECENT FINDINGS: For example, athletes with spinal cord injuries (SCI) have an impaired ability to thermoregulate due to a decreased sweat rate and ability to dissipate heat, thus making vigorous activity in the heat a challenge. These factors may put the athlete at risk for the following: dehy

Assessment of skin temperature during regional anaesthesia-What the anaesthesiologist should know.

Body temperature homeostasis is accurately regulated by complex feedback-driven neuronal mechanisms, which involve a multitude of thermoregulatory pathways. Thus, core temperature is constantly maintained within a narrow range. As one of the most effective regulatory systems skin temperature is dependent on skin blood flow. Skin blood flow in turn is highly dependent on sympathetic activity. Regional anaesthesia leads to blockade not only of somatosensory and motor nerve fibres but also of sympathetic fibres. As a consequence, vasoconstrictor tonic activity is abrogated and a vasodilation lead

Seasonal acclimatization determined by non-invasive measurements of coat insulation.

Seasonal acclimatization in terrestrial mammals in the Northern Hemisphere involves changes in coat insulation. It is more economical to provide increased insulation than increased heat production for protection against the cold. This study was done to test a technique for the non-invasive measurement of mammal coat insulation and to measure coat insulation over several seasons on captive exotics. The working hypothesis was that species that have no coat or have a coat that does not change seasonally do not acclimatize seasonally. Three surface temperature readings were measured from the torso

Evaluation and treatment of heat-related illnesses.

The body's ability to regulate core temperature depends on both host (internal) and environmental (external) factors. Although athletes are commonly thought to be most at risk for heat illnesses, children and the elderly are particularly vulnerable. Heat cramps, which are caused by fluid and electrolyte imbalances, are treated with massage, and fluid and electrolyte replacement. Heat exhaustion occurs both as water- and sodium-depleted types, with associated symptoms such as malaise, vomiting, and confusion. Treatment involves taking the affected person to a cool environment and replacing flui

Thyroid development in relation to the development of endothermy in the red-winged blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus).

We investigated the development of thyroid function during the transition to endothermy in red-winged blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus). Thermoregulatory capabilities of blackbirds improve markedly over their relatively short nestling period (10-12 days), with the most striking improvements occurring between days 6 and 8. We hypothesized that the development of endothermy in these birds is dependent in part on the development of thyroid function. We assessed thyroid development by measuring changes in thyroid gland histology and plasma concentrations of thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3)
