Identification of alcohol problem among long route bus drivers and staffs of Dharan, eastern Nepal: Assessing from the CAGE and DSM-IV tools.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use remains a major cause of preventable death worldwide occurring prematurely. Despite its global burden, alcohol still is a legal drug. Various studies have also shown that factors like education, occupation, influence from films and family, for stress relief, pleasure during alcohol use, better self-esteem, and occupational boredom are associated with alcohol use. The consumption of alcohol, even in relatively small amounts, increases the risk of being involved in a crash for motorists and pedestrians. It is also associated with impaired judgments and so is often linked

The material, moral, and affective worlds of dealing and crime among young men entrenched in an inner city drug scene.

A large body of previous research has elucidated how involvement in drug dealing and crime among marginalized urban youth who use drugs is shaped by the imperatives of addiction and survival in the context of poverty. However, a growing body of research has examined how youth's involvement in these activities is shaped by more expansive desires and moralities. In this paper, we examine the material, moral, and affective worlds of loosely gang affiliated, street level dealing and crime among one group of young men in Vancouver, Canada. Drawing on longitudinal interviews with 44 young men from 2

Characteristics and motivations of absconders from forensic mental health services: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Absconding from hospital is a significant health and security issue within psychiatric facilities that can have considerable adverse effects on patients, their family members and care providers, as well as the wider community. Several studies have documented correlates associated with absconding events among general psychiatric samples; however, few studies have examined this phenomenon within samples of forensic patients where the perception of threat to public safety in the event of an unauthorized absence from hospital is often higher. METHODS: We investigate the frequency, tim

Stress in the daily lives of cocaine and heroin users: relationship to mood, craving, relapse triggers, and cocaine use.

RATIONALE: Quantitative real-time data on the stress experienced by drug misusers in their daily lives may provide additional insight into stress's role in drug use. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to evaluate stress in relation to craving, mood, relapse-trigger exposure, and cocaine use in cocaine-dependent outpatients. METHODS: Methadone-maintained cocaine- and heroin-abusing outpatients (N = 114) provided ecological momentary assessment data on handheld computers. Ratings of stress were compared to those of craving and mood and past-hour exposure to putative drug-use triggers in r

Leading clever people.

In an economy driven by ideas and intellectual know-how, top executives recognize the importance of employing smart, highly creative people. But if clever people have one defining characteristic, it's that they do not want to be led. So what is a leader to do? The authors conducted more than 100 interviews with leaders and their clever people at major organizations such as PricewaterhouseCoopers, Cisco Systems, Novartis, the BBC, and Roche. What they learned is that the psychological relationships effective leaders have with their clever people are very different from the ones they have with t

Homelessness and smoking cessation: insights from focus groups.

Smoking prevalence among homeless persons is approximately 70%, yet little is known about tobacco use patterns or smoking cessation practices in this population. We assessed smoking attitudes and behaviors, psychosocial and environmental influences on smoking, barriers to and interest in quitting, and preferred methods for cessation among some homeless smokers. Six 90-min focus groups of current smokers (N = 62) were conducted at homeless service facilities. Participants had a mean age of 41.5 years (SD = 9.3), were predominantly male (69.4%) and African American (59%), and smoked an average o

Psychological effects of forest environments on healthy adults: Shinrin-yoku (forest-air bathing, walking) as a possible method of stress reduction.

OBJECTIVES: Shinrin-yoku (walking and/or staying in forests in order to promote health) is a major form of relaxation in Japan; however, its effects have yet to be completely clarified. The aims of this study were: (1) to evaluate the psychological effects of shinrin-yoku in a large number of participants; and (2) to identify the factors related to these effects. METHODS: Four hundred and ninety-eight healthy volunteers took part in the study. Surveys were conducted twice in a forest on the same day (forest day) and twice on a control day. Outcome measures were evaluated using the Multiple Mo

Inequality and the marginal well-being costs of lockdowns: the case of Chile's local lockdowns design.

This paper examines how heterogeneous lockdown policies can amplify pre-existing socioeconomic inequalities in well-being during public health crises. Using Chile’s municipality-level heterogeneous COVID-19 lockdown strategy as a case study, we assess whether local quarantines generated a double disadvantage for lower-socioeconomic-status populations: greater exposure to confinement and higher psychological costs when confined. We combine municipal-level lockdown records and socioeconomic data with a novel application of Google Trends to construct real-time indicators of population well-being.

Smartphone sensor data estimate alcohol craving in a cohort of patients with alcohol-associated liver disease and alcohol use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Sensors within smartphones, such as accelerometer and location, can describe longitudinal markers of behavior as represented through devices in a method called digital phenotyping. This study aimed to assess the feasibility of digital phenotyping for patients with alcohol-associated liver disease and alcohol use disorder, determine correlations between smartphone data and alcohol craving, and establish power assessment for future studies to prognosticate clinical outcomes. METHODS: A total of 24 individuals with alcohol-associated liver disease and alcohol use disorder were instru

Daily manifestations of caregiver- and self-reported maladaptive personality traits in adolescent girls.

Establishing maladaptive personality traits at a younger age in a developmentally appropriate and clinically tangible way may alert clinicians to dysfunction earlier, and thus reduce the risk of significant impairment later in life. The fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD) provides a set of traits useful for organizing behavioral and experiential patterns central to daily personality functioning. The goal of the present study was to evaluate manifestations indicative of AMPD traits via ambulatory a

Retention of service users on opioid substitution therapy in the City of Tshwane, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Opioid substitution therapy (OST) is evidence-based treatment for opioid use disorders and, when taken as maintenance therapy, has proven health and social benefits. The benefits of OST are achieved through the retention of service users in the treatment programme. AIM: To identify factors that affected retention of service users who had OST interrupted in less than 6 months of being in an OST programme. SETTING: This qualitative study was conducted with 19 service users from eight Community-Oriented Substance Use Programme (COSUP) sites in the City of Tshwane, Gauteng, South Afr

A Comprehensive Literature Review of Borderline Personality Disorder: Unraveling Complexity From Diagnosis to Treatment.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a severe mental illness marked by unpredictable feelings, behaviors, and relationships. Symptoms like emotional instability, impulsivity, and poor social connections are the basis for diagnostic criteria. A noteworthy discovery highlights the clinical overlap between BPD and several psychotic disorders by arguing that BPD and psychotic symptoms raise the risk of psychopathology. According to neuroimaging evidence, structural and functional brain changes, notably in regions controlling affective regulation and impulse control, are seen in BPD patients. A

Etiology of problem gambling in Canada.

OBJECTIVE: To conduct a large-scale national cohort study to identify the current etiological risk factors for problem gambling in Canada. METHOD: A cohort of 10,119 Canadian gamblers completed a comprehensive self-administered online questionnaire in 2018 and were reassessed in 2019. At baseline, the sample contained 1,388 at-risk gamblers, 1,346 problem gamblers, and 2,710 with a major DSM-5 mental health disorder. A total of 108 independent variables (IVs) were available for analysis, as well as the self-report of perceived causes of gambling-related problems for 1,261 individuals. RESULT

Protocol for a partially nested randomised controlled trial to evaluate the effectiveness of the scleroderma patient-centered intervention network COVID-19 home-isolation activities together (SPIN-CHAT) program to reduce anxiety among at-risk scleroderma patients.

OBJECTIVE: Contagious disease outbreaks and related restrictions can lead to negative psychological outcomes, particularly in vulnerable populations at risk due to pre-existing medical conditions. No randomised controlled trials (RCTs) have tested interventions to reduce mental health consequences of contagious disease outbreaks. The primary objective of the Scleroderma Patient-centered Intervention Network COVID-19 Home-isolation Activities Together (SPIN-CHAT) Trial is to evaluate the effect of a videoconference-based program on symptoms of anxiety. Secondary objectives include evaluating ef

Real-world activities of clinician-researchers in perioperative medicine: an ethnographic qualitative case study embedded in a single-centre clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Clinician-researchers play a key role in bridging clinical care and research, yet their day-to-day activities remain poorly described. This study aimed to characterise the range of activities undertaken by clinician-researchers in a perioperative clinical trial and explore how these activities are experienced by patient-participants. METHODS: We conducted an ethnographic qualitative case study embedded in an RCT in a tertiary hospital. In phase 1, clinician-researchers (physicians and nurses) were observed in situ over 10 days using shadowing and time-motion analysis to document t

"My drinking was way worse during the pandemic": A qualitative analysis of contextual and individual factors impacting alcohol use during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Evidence shows that alcohol use in the United States increased during the COVID-19 pandemic. This primarily quantitative work has not examined how the unique context of the COVID-19 pandemic in the U.S. may have shaped motivations for alcohol use during this crisis. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted an analysis of qualitative data from in-depth interviews examining people's motivations for using alcohol during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: Participants (N = 26) were derived from those who completed all three waves of the National Alcohol Survey COVID Cohort- a longitud

'The Big Island Model': Resident experiences of a novel permanent supportive housing model for responding to rural homelessness.

Research on rural homelessness focuses primarily on describing the experiences and prevalence of homelessness in rural contexts, with little focus on intervention strategies. We conducted a case study of the 'Big Island Model' (BIM), a novel approach to providing housing and support to individuals experiencing homelessness that has been developed for, and reflects, a rural context. We interviewed 13 participants (n = 10 men; n = 3 women) supported by the BIM using mixed interviews including qualitative and quantitative components exploring experiences of living within this model and aspects of
