Breast Density Awareness and Knowledge, and Intentions for Breast Cancer Screening in a Diverse Sample of Women Age Eligible for Mammography.

The objectives of this study were to assess breast density knowledge and breast density awareness, and to identify information associated with intention to complete routine and supplemental screening for breast cancer in a diverse sample of women age eligible for mammography. We quantitatively (self-report) assessed breast density awareness and knowledge (N = 264) in black (47.7%), Latina (35.2%), and white (17%) women recruited online and in the community. Most participants reported having heard about breast density (69.2%); less than one third knew their own breast density status (30.4%). Kn

Impact of Childbearing and Breastfeeding on Breast Density Change, and Subsequent Breast Cancer Risk in Postmenopausal Women: A Mediation Analysis.

We examined the associations of parity and breastfeeding with postmenopausal breast density, longitudinal changes in breast density, and breast cancer risk, and assessed the extent to which breast density mediates these relationships. We analyzed a cohort of women who underwent mammography in 2009-2010 and had at least one follow-up mammogram through 2016. Parity and breastfeeding history were self-reported, breast density was classified using Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS), and relative risks (RRs) were estimated using Poisson regression. Mediation analysis evaluated the c

Associations of stem cell markers CD44, CD24 and ALDH1A1 with mammographic breast density in women with benign breast biopsies.

BACKGROUND: We examined associations of CD44, CD24 and ALDH1A1 breast stem cell markers with mammographic breast density (MBD), a well-established breast cancer (BCa) risk factor. METHODS: We included 218 cancer-free women with biopsy-confirmed benign breast disease within the Nurses' Health Study (NHS) and NHSII. The data on BCa risk factors were obtained from biennial questionnaires. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) was done on tissue microarrays. For each core, the IHC expression was assessed using a semi-automated platform and expressed as percent of positively stained cells for each marker out

Association of Digital Breast Tomosynthesis vs Digital Mammography With Cancer Detection and Recall Rates by Age and Breast Density.

IMPORTANCE: Breast cancer screening examinations using digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) has been shown to be associated with decreased false-positive test results and increased breast cancer detection compared with digital mammography (DM). Little is known regarding the size and stage of breast cancer types detected and their association with age and breast density. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether screening examinations using DBT detect breast cancers that are associated with an improved prognosis and to compare the detection rates by patient age and breast density. Breast-density assessment with hand-held ultrasound: A novel biomarker to assess breast cancer risk and to tailor screening?

OBJECTIVES: To assess feasibility and diagnostic accuracy of a novel hand-held ultrasound (US) method for breast density assessment that measures the speed of sound (SoS), in comparison to the ACR mammographic (MG) categories. METHODS: ACR-MG density (a=fatty to d=extremely dense) and SoS-US were assessed in the retromamillary, inner and outer segments of 106 women by two radiographers. A conventional US system was used for SoS-US. A reflector served as timing reference for US signals transmitted through the breasts. Four blinded readers assessed average SoS (m/s), ΔSoS (segment-variation SoS

Impact of Breast Density Legislation on Breast Cancer Risk Assessment and Supplemental Screening: A Survey of 110 Radiology Facilities.

Breast density notification laws, passed in 19 states as of October 2014, mandate that patients be informed of their breast density. The purpose of this study is to assess the impact of this legislation on radiology practices, including performance of breast cancer risk assessment and supplemental screening studies. A 20-question anonymous web-based survey was emailed to radiologists in the Society of Breast Imaging between August 2013 and March 2014. Statistical analysis was performed using Fisher's exact test. Around 121 radiologists from 110 facilities in 34 USA states and 1 Canadian site r

The effect of age, menopausal state, and breast density on (18)F-FDG uptake in normal glandular breast tissue.

UNLABELLED: Theoretically, the degree of (18)F-FDG uptake in the glandular tissues of the normal breast can affect the detection of breast cancer. The aim of this prospective study was to investigate relationships among age, menopausal state, and breast density and determine whether they affect (18)F-FDG uptake in normal glandular breast tissue. METHODS: Among 250 newly diagnosed breast cancer patients, 149 patients (mean age +/- SD, 50.9 +/- 9.70 y; range, 32-77 y) were analyzed because they had normal contralateral breasts confirmed by MRI, mammography, and (18)F-FDG PET examinations. Longitudinal history of mammographic breast density and breast cancer risk by familial risk, menopausal status, and initial mammographic density level in a high risk cohort: a nested case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Elevated mammographic density is associated with increased breast cancer risk. However, the contribution of longitudinal changes in mammographic density to breast cancer risk beyond initial mammographic density levels, considering familial breast cancer risk and menopausal status, remains uncertain but holds important clinical implications. METHODS: In a nested case-control study within the Sister Study (323 cases, 899 controls; 12,095 mammograms), a cohort enriched for family history of breast cancer, we examined case-control status in relation to the largest annual change in per

Mammographic breast density, body mass index and risk of breast cancer in Korean women aged 75 years and older.

Mammographic breast density and body mass index (BMI) are strong risk factors of breast cancer, but few studies have investigated these factors in older women. Our study assessed the association between breast density, BMI and the breast cancer risk among women aged ≥75 years. We included women who underwent breast cancer screening between 2009 and 2014 and were followed up until 2020. Breast density was measured using Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System. BMI was classified into three groups: <23, 23 to <25 and ≥25. Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate the association of

Validation of a new fully automated software for 2D digital mammographic breast density evaluation in predicting breast cancer risk.

We compared accuracy for breast cancer (BC) risk stratification of a new fully automated system (DenSeeMammo-DSM) for breast density (BD) assessment to a non-inferiority threshold based on radiologists' visual assessment. Pooled analysis was performed on 14,267 2D mammograms collected from women aged 48-55 years who underwent BC screening within three studies: RETomo, Florence study and PROCAS. BD was expressed through clinical Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS) density classification. Women in BI-RADS D category had a 2.6 (95% CI 1.5-4.4) and a 3.6 (95% CI 1.4-9.3) times highe

Gestational diabetes, type II diabetes, and mammographic breast density in a U.S. racially diverse population screened for breast cancer.

PURPOSE: Type II diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has consistently been associated with an increased risk of breast cancer, but the association of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) with breast cancer is less clear. T2DM and GDM may influence breast cancer risk through mammographic breast density, a strong risk factor for breast cancer. We examined whether T2DM and GDM are associated with higher mammographic breast density in a largely racial/ethnic minority sample. METHODS: We collected digital mammograms, anthropometric measures, and interview data from 511 racially diverse women recruited during
