Trochanteric Bursitis Following Primary Total Hip Arthroplasty: Incidence, Predictors, and Treatment.

BACKGROUND: Trochanteric bursitis (TB) remains a common complication after total hip arthroplasty (THA), with an incidence between 3% and 17%, depending on the surgical approach, with the posterior approach (PA) being relatively protective compared to the lateral approach. The purposes of this study were to determine the incidence of TB after primary THA, identify potential risk factors for TB, and examine the utility of different modes of treatment. METHODS: Retrospective cohort data of 990 primary THAs performed in a single institution, including 613 PAs and 377 direct anterior approaches (

Ischial Pain and Sitting Disability Due to Ischiogluteal Bursitis: Visual Vignette.

Ischial bursitis or ischiogluteal bursitis is the inflammation of the ischiogluteal bursa due to excessive or inappropriate physical exercise, prolonged sitting, running, repetitive jumping, and kicking. Since ischial bursitis is a rare, infrequently recognized pathology and is difficult to differentiate from the soft tissue disease and tumors (both malignant and benign), herein exemplified is a case with ischiogluteal bursitis whereby the role of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the prompt diagnosis has been highlighted.

Citric acid treatment of chronic nonhealing ulcerated tophaceous gout with bursitis.

The ulceration associated with gout tophi is very difficult to treat because of impaired and halted local inflammatory response resulting from the gout treatment regimen. We report chronic nonhealing tophaceous gout with bursitis in an 80-year-old male, not responding to conventional treatment modality for months together. This nonhealing ulcer was treated successfully with local application of 3% citric acid ointment for 22 days.

Greater trochanteric pain syndrome: more than bursitis and iliotibial tract friction.

Disorders causing lateral hip pain are encountered frequently by physicians. Evaluating these problems can be challenging because of the myriad of potential causes, the complex anatomy of the peritrochanteric structures, and the inconsistently described etiologic factors. Misconceptions about the causes of lateral hip pain and tenderness are common, frequently leading to approaches that only provide temporary solutions rather than address the underlying pathology. Trochanteric bursitis is implicated frequently but is seldom the primary cause of pain in chronic cases. It is important to address

Hamular Bursitis and its possible craniofacial referred symptomatology: two case reports.

The diagnosis of craniofacial pain is conditioned by the interdisciplinary management of its presentation especially in the absence of unique and objective signs. Bursitis is a pathological entity recently found in the hamular area and should be included in the diagnosis for exclusion of temporomandibular disorders (TMD), ear-nose-throat pathologies, due to the similar symptomatology to other head and neck conditions. The hamular process bursitis is a painful condition that can easily be confused with glosopharinge or trigeminal neuralgia that generates an uncomfortable feeling in the orophari

Bursitis due to Mycobacterium goodii, a recently described, rapidly growing mycobacterium.

We report a case of olecranon bursitis due to Mycobacterium goodii in a 60-year-old man. Prior to recognition of his infection, he received intrabursal steroids and underwent olecranon bursectomy. His infection was cured with antimicrobial therapy consisting of doxycycline and ciprofloxacin. This case illustrates that previously unrecognized members of the Mycobacterium smegmatis group of mycobacteria have pathogenic potential.

Ischiogluteal bursitis mimicking soft-tissue metastasis from a renal cell carcinoma.

We report a case of ischiogluteal bursitis mimicking a soft-tissue metastasis from a renal cell carcinoma. A 66-year-old woman suffered from pain over the left buttock 6 months after she was operated on for renal cell carcinoma of the left kidney. CT of the abdomen and pelvis revealed a tumor-like lesion adjacent to the left os ischii, which was suspected to be a soft-tissue metastasis. Percutaneous biopsy revealed no evidence of malignancy, but the histopathological diagnosis of chronic bursitis.

Immunocytologic characteristics of mononuclear cell populations found in nonseptic olecranon bursitis.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the immunocytologic characteristics of the various subsets of nonseptic olecranon bursal fluid mononuclear cells. METHODS: Twenty consecutive patients with culture negative olecranon bursitis had immunocytochemical and flow cytometric analysis performed using a panel of monoclonal antibodies to determine lymphocyte and monocyte/macrophage population subtypes and proportions. RESULTS: In traumatic bursitis (n = 9), the mean (+/- SD) white blood cell (WBC) count/mm3 was 1,368 +/- 1,559; WBC mononuclear differential count was 29.5 +/- 19% lymphocytes and 55 +/- 26% monoc

Idiopathic or traumatic olecranon bursitis. Clinical features and bursal fluid analysis.

Thirty cases of idiopathic olecranon bursitis were studied. Most had previous local trauma. The process was unilateral and often associated with nontender pitting edema in cases of short duration. Ten patients exhibited a bony spur at the olecranon process, and amorphous calcific deposits were seen in 6. The bursal fluid was hemorrhagic with a xanthochromic supernatant, and the mucin clot test was poor or fair. Leukocyte count averaged 878/mm3, predominantly mononuclears. Many cells contained inclusion bodies. Glucose, total protein, and complement (C3) concentration averaged 80, 60, and 60% o

[Acupuncture and moxibustion for rice body bursitis of knee joint: a case report].

This article reports the differentiation and treatment experience of acupuncture and moxibustion for a case of rice body bursitis of knee joint, which could be classified as "crane-knee wind" in TCM. The disease location involves the meridian sinews of the knee region, and is deficiency in origin and excess in symptom. Referencing the classical formula Sishen Jian for crane-knee wind, a staged acupuncture-moxibustion protocol was implemented: at the initial phase (the 1st week), quintuple needling was delivered at local points i.e. bilateral Heding (EX-LE2) and Xuehai (SP10), to regulate the l

Bilateral Giant Septic Iliopsoas Bursitis in an Immunocompromised Patient: A Case Report.

We present a case of giant bilateral iliopsoas bursitis (IB) in a patient with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) who presented to the emergency department with bilateral hip pain and fever. He was initially worked up for septicemia. Inflammatory markers at the time of admission were elevated. He was started on IV antibiotics. Contrast-enhanced CT scan of the abdomen and pelvis demonstrated a retrocrural collection secondary to discitis/osteomyelitis, as well as large bilateral multilocular collections deep to the iliacus muscle concerning for bilateral septic giant IB. The collections were dr

Low prevalence of trochanteric bursitis in patients with refractory lateral hip pain.

INTRODUCTION: Bursitis at the greater trochanter has historically been identified as a major pain generator in patients with lateral hip pain (LHP). We believe that hip abductor tendon pathology (HATP) plays an important and overlooked role in LHP. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the presence of isolated trochanteric bursitis on MRI in patients with refractory LHP. METHODS: The MRIs of 120 patients with LHP (94% women, median age 54 years) performed at our orthopaedic outpatient clinic between 2017 and 2020 were evaluated by two raters for trochanter-related pathologies, including H

Atypical presentation of shoulder brucellosis misdiagnosed as subacromial bursitis: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Brucella infections in the shoulder joint are uncommon, and few have been reported in the literature. CASE SUMMARY: A 26-year-old male was admitted to our hospital with complaint of recurrent pain and limited movement of the right shoulder. The patient reported the pain to have first occurred as an isolated event 6 mo previously and to have reoccurred 5 mo later, when it was accompanied by limited movement of the shoulder. Findings from physical examination and magnetic resonance imaging (referred to as MRI) suggested the diagnosis of subacromial bursitis, and diagnostic paracente

Clinical characteristics and management of olecranon and prepatellar septic bursitis in a multicentre study.

BACKGROUND: No current guidelines are available for managing septic bursitis (SB). OBJECTIVES: To describe the clinical characteristics and management of olecranon and prepatellar SB in five French tertiary care centres. METHODS: This is a retrospective observational multicentre study. SB was diagnosed on the basis of positive cultures of bursal aspirate. In the absence of positive bursal fluid, the diagnosis came from typical clinical presentation, exclusion of other causes of bursitis and favourable response to antibiotic therapy. RESULTS: We included 272 patients (median age of 53 years,
