INTRODUCTION: Butorphanol is sometimes added to multimodal intravenous patient-controlled analgesia (PCA), but its incremental analgesic benefit and adverse symptom burden when combined with an established sufentanil-based regimen remain uncertain.
METHODS: This single-center retrospective cohort study used routinely collected perioperative, postoperative PCA follow-up, and hospital billing data from July 2022 to June 2025. Patients who underwent gynecologic surgery and received one of four eligible base PCA regimens were included. Movement-evoked pain on postoperative day 1 was the primary e

PURPOSE: Postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) remain common after thoracoscopic lung resection. Butorphanol, a κ-opioid receptor agonist with analgesic and potential opioid-sparing properties, may influence postoperative respiratory recovery. This trial evaluated whether perioperative butorphanol reduces PPCs after elective thoracoscopic lung resection.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial conducted at a tertiary teaching hospital in China from January to July 2025, adults aged 18-65 years with American Society of Anesthesiologists physical

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Postoperative pain therapy is still a problem for clinicians. Continuous basal infusion of drugs combined with standard patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) is considered to be an effective means of postoperative acute pain management. This study was designed to investigate the analgesic efficacy, morphine-sparing effects and side effects of butorphanol delivered as a continuous infusion adjunct to intravenous morphine PCA after abdominal hysterectomy.
METHODS: One hundred and eighty-six ASA physical status I-II patients, undergoing total abdominal hysterectomy, were a

The effects of butorphanol tartrate on arterial pressure, jejunal blood flow, vascular resistance, oxygen extraction, and oxygen uptake were determined in 10 anesthetized ponies ventilated with a mixture of halothane and 100% oxygen, using isolated autoperfused jejunal segments. Physiologic saline solution or butorphanol tartrate (0.2 mg/kg of body weight) was administered as a single bolus into the left jugular vein. By 2 minutes, butorphanol decreased arterial blood pressure and intestinal blood flow, and increased intestinal oxygen extraction. However, intestinal vascular resistance and oxy

Multiple anesthesia protocols have been used in the cheetah ( Acinonyx jubatus ). Twenty healthy, captive cheetahs were immobilized with dexmedetomidine (15.8 ± 1.9 μg/kg), butorphanol (0.22 ± 0.03 mg/kg), and midazolam (0.18 ± 0.03 mg/kg) by intramuscular injection. Induction, recumbency, and recovery times were recorded, and physiologic parameters were monitored. Anesthesia was antagonized with atipamezole (0.125 ± 0.02 mg/kg) and naltrexone (0.1 ± 0.014 mg/kg) intramuscularly. All cheetahs were safely anesthetized with this protocol. Cheetahs were laterally recumbent by 8 ± 3.5 min. Cardior

BACKGROUND: Continuous-rate infusion (CRI) of drugs results in more stable plasma drug concentrations than administration of intermittent boluses, thus providing greater stability of physiological parameters. The aim of this study was to evaluate the physiologic and analgesic effects of the administration of morphine, butorphanol, tramadol or methadone by CRI in horses with induced synovitis of the radiocarpal joint.
RESULTS: Increased values of cardiorespiratory parameters and body temperature were observed in all groups after initiation of opioid administration, and these increases were sus
