Identification and preservation of the parathyroid gland during total thyroidectomy in dogs with bilateral thyroid carcinoma: a report of six cases.

Simultaneous removal of bilateral thyroid tumors was performed while preserving the parathyroid gland in six dogs. At least one external parathyroid gland was identified in all dogs. In five cases, the external parathyroid gland and its blood supply were preserved intact. In one dog, the vessels supplying the external parathyroid gland had been invaded by the tumor, and the gland was thus removed and reimplanted into the sternohyoid muscle. That dog required postoperative treatment with oral calcium gluconate and vitamin D3. Local tumor recurrence was not observed in any of the cases. The mean

[Inhalation anaesthesia in bronchoscopies on infants and small children (author's transl)].

Over the past 5 years 37 bronchoscopies were performed on children aged 7 months to 3 years for the removal of foreign bodies, the diagnosis of inflammations, and the cause of chronic stridor. Because of improved instrumentation, illumination with "cold light" and cooperation between endoscopist and anaesthesist there were no complications. Anaesthesia was achieved by a mixture of oxygen, nitrous oxide and fluothane without use of muscle relaxants. Each child was given Atropine and Solu-Decortin H and if indicated Calcium gluconate and Euphillin. These endoscopies, except in three children wit

Peri-delivery Calcium Administration and Postpartum Bleeding: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether peri-delivery administration of exogenous calcium improves postpartum bleeding outcomes. DATA SOURCES: We conducted a systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and quasi-randomized trials comparing pregnant individuals undergoing vaginal or cesarean delivery who received exogenous calcium before or within 1 hour of delivery with those who received no calcium supplementation. We searched Ovid MEDLINE, Ovid EMBASE, CINAHL, Scopus, Web of Science, and CENTRAL/The Cochrane Library (including ClinicalTrials.gov) from inception through July 10, 2025 (PRO

Osteopetrorickets due to Snx10 deficiency in mice results from both failed osteoclast activity and loss of gastric acid-dependent calcium absorption.

Mutations in sorting nexin 10 (Snx10) have recently been found to account for roughly 4% of all human malignant osteopetrosis, some of them fatal. To study the disease pathogenesis, we investigated the expression of Snx10 and created mouse models in which Snx10 was knocked down globally or knocked out in osteoclasts. Endocytosis is severely defective in Snx10-deficient osteoclasts, as is extracellular acidification, ruffled border formation, and bone resorption. We also discovered that Snx10 is highly expressed in stomach epithelium, with mutations leading to high stomach pH and low calcium so

Improving management of severe hypoparathyroidism: a case series.

INTRODUCTION: Hypoparathyroidism is considered a rare endocrine disease. Despite being a deficiency of parathyroid hormone, the standard therapy is based on oral calcium and active vitamin D supplementation. This approach provides satisfactory management in most cases but may be inadequate for patients in the most complex spectrum of the disease. Other therapies are being explored, and among them, the use of recombinant human parathyroid hormone (PTH) has proved to decrease the requirements of calcium and active vitamin D to reach adequate therapeutic goals. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to provide inf

Evaluation of a standardized short-time calcium suppression test in healthy subjects: interest for the diagnosis of primary hyperparathyroidism.

OBJECTIVE: The diagnosis of primary hyperparathyroidism (PHP) can be difficult in patients with normal plasma calcium or parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels. We perfected a standardized short-time i.v. calcium loading test in healthy controls (HC) and compared the results with those of patients with PHP. METHODS: Sixteen HC received 0.33 mmol/kg calcium gluconate intravenously for 3 h. Plasma calcium and serum PTH levels (assayed with immunoluminescent sandwich methods) were measured before, at the end of the infusion and 3 h later. Results were compared with those of 16 PHP patients. RESULTS:

Double Trouble: Acquired QTc Prolongation in a Patient on Denosumab and Amiodarone.

Prolongation of the corrected QT (QTc) interval is a known risk factor for life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias and can result from medications, electrolyte imbalances, or both. We report the case of a 70-year-old female with atrial fibrillation on amiodarone and osteoporosis treated with denosumab who presented with dizziness, but without syncope, palpitations, or chest pain. She was hemodynamically stable with negative orthostatic vitals, and neurologic examination revealed a positive Romberg sign. Brain imaging was unremarkable. ECG demonstrated marked QTc prolongation >550 ms (referenc

Fahr syndrome associated with hypoparathyroidism: Case report.

RATIONALE: Fahr's syndrome is characterized by bilateral intracranial calcifications involving the cerebellum, basal ganglia, thalamus, radial crown, and subcortical white matter. It is a rare neurological disorder often associated with hypoparathyroidism (HypoPT). HypoPT-induced hypocalcemia triggers calcium-phosphate deposition in brain parenchyma, typically manifesting as tetany, seizures, or extrapyramidal symptoms. Diagnostic challenges arise from overlapping symptom features with neurodegenerative and psychiatric disorders. We present a case of Fahr's syndrome secondary to iatrogenic Hyp

[Convulsions and neonatal hypoparathyroidism revealing maternal hyperparathyroidism].

BACKGROUND: Severe prolonged hypocalcemia may occur in neonates whose parathyroid hormone production has been blocked by maternal hyperparathyroidism. This report describes such a case. CASE REPORT: A 7 day-old girl was admitted suffering from dyspnea and repeated convulsions that had continued for 2 days. Her birthweight was 3,500 g and her height 50 cm. Her mother had been given an iron preparation and calcium during pregnancy. Clinical examination of the newborn at birth revealed a cleft palate and micrognathia. The baby had been given milk-formula plus ergocalciferol, 1,200 IU/day. At adm

Direct in vivo comparison of calcium-regulated parathyroid hormone secretion in normal volunteers and patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism.

The regulation of PTH secretion by calcium is altered in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism. A similar disturbance may occur in secondary hyperparathyroidism, but direct in vivo comparisons of PTH secretion in normal subjects and those with secondary hyperparathyroidism have not been made. Thus, 13 patients with end-stage renal failure and secondary hyperparathyroidism and 20 healthy volunteers underwent dynamic tests of PTH secretion. Changes in ionized calcium were induced by 2-h iv infusions of calcium gluconate or sodium citrate on consecutive days, and the sigmoidal relationship be

Hypocalcemia during restraint stress in rats. Indication that gastric ulcer prophylaxis by exogenous calcium interferes with calcitonin release.

The influence of restraint stress on serum calcium (Ca) and phosphate was studied in normal and thyroidectomized rats. In addition the response of gastric stress ulcer index, blood gastrin and glucagon to exogenous Ca was investigated. In intact as well as in thyroidectomized animals serum total, ionised and previously injected radioactive Ca decrease during an 8h stress period, whereas inorganic phosphate increases. Together with a constant specific activity these findings are consistent with hypoparathyroidism and calcitonin independent hypocalcemia during stress. Intragastric infusion of 45

Calcium and vitamin D reduce hypoparathyroidism and hospital stay after thyroidectomy: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Transient hypoparathyroidism is a common complication after total thyroidectomy, prolonging hospitalization and necessitating calcium and/or vitamin D replacement. Evidence from prospective randomized trials on preventive supplementation remains limited. This study aimed to evaluate whether prophylactic calcium and vitamin D supplementation reduces transient hypoparathyroidism and shortens hospital stay after total thyroidectomy. METHODS: In this single-center, prospective, randomized, controlled, open-label trial, 600 patients undergoing total thyroidectomy without central neck d

Development and Validation of a Green Analytical Method for Calcium Determination in Pharmaceuticals Using Curcumin: A Sustainable Approach.

BACKGROUND: Reliable determination of calcium in pharmaceuticals is crucial for quality control, yet conventional methods often rely on synthetic chelating agents such as EDTA, which raise environmental and safety concerns. Curcumin, the principal polyphenolic compound in Curcuma longa (turmeric), exhibits strong metal-chelating properties through its β-diketone structure. This study explores the use of curcumin as a natural and sustainable chelating agent for the spectrophotometric determination of calcium in pharmaceutical formulations. METHOD: Curcumin was extracted from turmeric rhizomes

Acute hypermagnesemia: a rare complication of antacid administration after bone marrow transplantation.

INTRODUCTION: We reported a case of hypermagnesemia in whom hypotension, hypothermia, and coma developed after repetitive doses of a seemingly harmless antacid for epigastric pain following bone marrow transplantation. METHODS: For this case, serial electrolytes, blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, calcium, and magnesium were obtained. Issues addressed were the restoration of normal hydration by normal saline, together with forced diuresis to hasten the renal excretion of magnesium, and eventual changes in its levels. RESULTS: The highest measured magnesium concentration was 5.9 mmol/l. She rec

Efficient phosphate binding using a combination of gluconolactate and carbonate calcium salts.

Although renal-failure-related hyperphosphataemia can be corrected by various phosphate binders, there remains a need for safer and more efficient formulations to precipitate phosphate. This work describes both a theoretical approach and a phosphate precipitation test in order to design efficient binding calcium salts formulations. The results show that the combination of a soluble calcium salt (the gluconolactate) and a proton-consuming calcium salt (the carbonate) can precipitate phosphate effectively. Furthermore, the theoretical computations correlate well with the ability of the salt to b

Pseudohypoparathyroidism in a Chinese girl: A case report.

Pseudohypoparathyroidism is a rare genetic disorder characterized by hypocalcemia, hyperphosphatemia, and elevated serum intact parathyroid hormone levels. The taxonomy of pseudohypoparathyroidism is intricate, with heterogeneous clinical presentations and lack of specificity. A school-age Chinese girl was admitted with a 2-day history of fever and a single episode of seizure, with no clinical features of Albright hereditary osteodystrophy. Physical examination revealed positive Chvostek's and Trousseau's signs, with no other significant abnormalities. Laboratory tests revealed hypocalcemia, e
