The flesh fly genus Wohlfahrtia Brauer & Bergenstamm contains at least six species of medical and veterinary importance. Traditional methods of species identification in specimens of Wohlfahrtia, however, are restricted mostly to adult forms. Muscle attachment site (MAS) patterns allow for species determination in larval forms. MAS patterns in third instar larvae of six common West Palearctic species of Wohlfahrtia have been analyzed for this study. As in previously investigated Calliphoridae and Sarcophagidae, MAS patterns were found to be species specific. A genus pattern was established to

BACKGROUND: Myiasis is the invasion of living tissue of humans and other mammals by eggs or maggots of flies of the order of Diptera. It occurs mainly in the Tropics and is associated with inadequate public and personal hygiene. Oral myiases in an older man appears to be rare.
OBJECTIVE: To relate a case of oral myiases in a debilitated older man treated by mechanical removal of the maggots, identifying the adult insect that caused the infestation.
METHODS: The diagnosis of oral myiasis was established by the clinical examination and it was detected that the infestation involved only soft ti

Human myiasis is an infestation caused by fly larvae. Although cutaneous myiasis is the most common form, involvement of the urogenital tract is rare. We present a case of urethral myiasis in an elderly male with a long-term indwelling urethral catheter. The patient presented to the emergency department of a tertiary hospital in Northern Greece with urethral pain. Approximately twenty larvae, each measuring about 10 mm, were removed manually. There were no signs of deeper tissue involvement or bladder infestation. The patient received a short course of oral broad-spectrum antibiotics and repor

Orbital ophthalmomyiasis occurs infrequently in Thailand. Herein, we report a case in Chiang Mai, Thailand, of orbital ophthalmomyiasis due to larvae of the blow fly Chrysomya bezziana (Diptera: Calliphoridae). A 94-year-old woman was admitted to Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital, Chiang Mai, Thailand, with a swollen and ulcerated right upper eyelid. The lesion in the eyelid had multiple holes around the ulcer site; bleeding was accompanied by pus and necrotic tissue - the site was filled with dipteran larvae. Eleven larvae were removed from the patient, of which five were killed for microsco

The two most important fly species causing traumatic cutaneous myiasis of sheep in Europe are Wohlfahrtia magnifica (Diptera: Sarcophagidae), which causes a form of myiasis known as wound myiasis, mainly in southern and eastern Europe, and Lucilia sericata (Diptera: Calliphoridae), which causes sheep strike, mainly in the middle latitudes of Europe. Other calliphorid blow-flies play a role mainly as secondary agents of myiasis, but in northern latitudes the L. caesar/illustris group are primary agents. Infestation levels vary greatly from region to region depending on a wide range of factors r

Infestations of Cochliomyia hominivorax, the New World Screwworm (NWS), has become a reemerging veterinary concern in the United States due to the recent northward expansion of fly detections as far as northern Mexico. Rapid, accurate and validated detection pipelines need to be developed in the case of an incursion into the United States. Confirmatory cases are evaluated by morphological identification with no paired test to verify identifications. With the frequency of submissions of non-ideal samples, particularly from fly traps, a molecular tool would be necessary for species identificatio

A young man presented in the emergency department for pain and loss of vision in the right eye. On examination, a deformed globe with a massive infestation of orbit with live maggots and necrotic slough was noted. The vision showed no light perception in the right eye, with a normal left eye examination. Several live maggots were removed from the right orbit. The maggots were identified as Chrysomya species larvae. MRI of the brain and orbit showed a markedly deformed globe with mucosal thickening of the ethmoid sinus with disrupted lamina papyracea. Despite having no identifiable immunocompro

Insect population control through continual releases of large numbers of sterile insects, called sterile insect technique (SIT), is only possible if one can mass-rear large quantities of healthy insects. Adaptation of insect stocks to rearing conditions and artificial feeding systems can have a multitude of negative effects such as inbreeding depression, reduced compatibility with wild strains, unintentional selection for traits that lower fitness after release, and an altered microbiome. Changes to insect microbiomes can have many effects on insects ranging from a reduction in sex pheromones

The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of pour-on fluralaner formulations for the prevention of cutaneous myiasis caused by Cochliomyia hominivorax in newborn calves under field conditions. Three field trials were conducted in Argentina, including subtropical and temperate regions. In Trial 1, calves with unhealed navels were assigned to two fluralaner-treated groups with different commercial pour-on formulations and an untreated control group. In Trial 2, two groups of newborn calves were treated either with fluralaner pour-on or injectable doramectin. Trial 3, where 84 calves wer

One group of promising pest control agents are the entomopathogenic fungi; one such example is Conidiobolus coronatus, which produces a range of metabolites. Our present findings reveal for the first time that C. coronatus also produces dodecanol, a compound widely used to make surfactants and pharmaceuticals, and enhance flavors in food. The main aim of the study was to determine the influence of dodecanol on insect defense systems, i.e. cuticular lipid composition and the condition of insect immunocompetent cells; hence, its effect was examined in detail on two species differing in susceptib

The Old World screwworm fly (OWSF), Chrysomya bezziana (Diptera: Calliphoridae), is an important agent of traumatic myiasis and, as such, a major human and animal health problem. In the implementation of OWSF control operations, it is important to determine the geographical origins of such disease-causing species in order to establish whether they derive from endemic or invading populations. Gross morphological and molecular studies have demonstrated the existence of two distinct lineages of this species, one African and the other Asian. Wing morphometry is known to be of substantial assistanc

Oestrid flies (Diptera: Oestridae) do not feed during the adult stage as they acquire all necessary nutrients during the parasitic larval stage. The adult mouthparts and digestive tract are therefore frequently vestigial; however, morphological data on the alimentary canal in adult oestrid flies are scarce and a proper visualization of this organ system within the adult body is lacking. The present work visualizes the morphology of the alimentary canal in adults of two oestrid species, Oestrus ovis L. and Hypoderma lineatum (de Villiers), with the use of non-invasive micro-computed tomography

Myiases are infestations with dipteran larvae in both necrosed and living tissues, the food source of these insects. These illnesses occur in warm humid climates, and are most frequent in developing countries. We assessed the epidemiological aspects and the influence of climate on the occurrence of myiases and the bioagents in patients admitted to the federal Hospital do Andaraí in Rio de Janeiro from February 2007 to 2008. The influence of abiotic factors (temperature, humidity, and rainfall) on the incidence of myiases was investigated by using the Pearson's correlation test. Of the 40 patie

Chrysomya Robineau-Desvoidy (Diptera: Calliphoridae) is a genus of blowfly commonly observed in tropical and subtropical countries of the Old World. Species in this genus are vectors of bacteria, protozoans and helminths, cause myiasis, are predators of other carrion insects, and are important forensic indicators. Hypotheses concerning the evolution of sex determination, larval anatomy and genome size in Chrysomya have been difficult to evaluate because a robust phylogeny of the genus was lacking. Similarly, the monophyly of subgenera was uncertain. The phylogeny of Chrysomya spp. was reconstr

Human myiasis is characterized by larval infestation of body tissues or cavities of live individuals. Although most frequently observed in underdeveloped and tropical countries, reports of human myiasis have been encountered throughout the world. Conventional treatment is the mechanical removal of the larvae, one by one, which is painful and embarrassing and repugnant to both health professional and patient. Even though human myiasis is not considered rare, most dental professionals have very little knowledge of the diagnosis and treatment of this pathology. The purpose of this article, theref

A survey of the sources of Clostridium botulinum type C toxin possibly utilized as food by aquatic birds in an epizootic area of avian botulism in northern Utah showed that living aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates normally found in close association with dead, decomposing birds commonly carried the toxin. Of 461 samples associated with 21 species of avian carcasses, 198 were toxin-positive. Invertebrate species not normally scavengers of vertebrate tissues were less commonly and less highly toxic, particularly when captured 30 cm or more from a carcass; six of 237 samples of such aquatic i

Morphological identification of medically important flies is often hindered by incomplete or damaged specimens, cryptic species, and morphological conservatism among closely related species. In this study, common fly species were collected from 15 cities across 10 provinces in China to evaluate rDNA internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) as a potential DNA barcode for molecular identification. A total of 1252 fly specimens were collected, of which 933 were morphologically classified into 19 species, 15 genera, 9 families, and 3 superfamilies; 319 remained unidentified due to the loss of key morp

BACKGROUND: Lucilia cuprina (Wiedemann, 1830) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) is the main causative agent of flystrike of sheep in Australia and New Zealand. Female flies lay eggs in an open wound or natural orifice, and the developing larvae eat the host's tissues, a condition called myiasis. To improve our understanding of host-seeking behavior, we quantified gene expression in male and female antennae based on their behavior.
METHODS: A spatial olfactometer was used to evaluate the olfactory response of L. cuprina mated males and gravid females to fresh or rotting beef. Antennal RNA-Seq analysis

BACKGROUND: Feral swine (Sus scrofa) are highly invasive and threaten animal and human health in the Americas. The screwworm (Cochliomyia hominivorax) is listed by the World Organization for Animal Health as a notifiable infestation because myiasis cases affect livestock, wildlife, and humans in endemic areas, and outbreaks can have major socioeconomic consequences in regions where the screwworm has been eradicated. However, a knowledge gap exists on screwworm infestation of feral swine in South America, where the screwworm is endemic. Here, we report screwworm infestation of feral swine harve

Post-mortem vertebrate scavenging may produce tissue alterations that mimic ante-mortem trauma, representing a potential source of error in forensic interpretation. We report a case of extensive soft tissue loss in the face and the anterior part of the neck of a human corpse, initially attributed to a canine attack. A multidisciplinary approach, including scene investigation, autopsy, and entomological and histological analyses, was applied to determine the origin of the lesions and reconstruct the scene. First-instar larvae of Calliphora vicina (Diptera: Calliphoridae) were collected and used
