Bench press performance during an intermittent hypoxic resistance training to muscle failure.

BACKGROUND: Resistance training performed under hypoxia conditions has been shown to cause major metabolic and hormonal responses. However, the influence of hypoxia on an acute session has been barely studied. The aim of this study was to evaluate the acute effects of an intermittent hypoxic resistance training (IHRT) to muscle failure on bench press performance. METHODS: A randomized crossover design was performed, and 25 untrained men performed a resistance training under two different conditions: normoxia (FIO2=21%) and high-level hypoxia (FIO2=13%). Resistance training consisted of 3 sets

Restriction capillaries as an innovative mixing unit for intermediate mobile phase exchange in multidimensional analysis.

A novel mixing unit is proposed for the serial coupling of orthogonal columns to analyze polar and non-polar compounds in a single run. The principle relies on the isolation of unretained peaks eluting from a first dimension column in a sample loop, before directing them to a second column for separation. Since the mobile phases employed in highly orthogonal separations are not directly compatible, a mixing unit is required to alter the mobile phase composition before executing the second dimension separation. The mixing unit proposed in this work is based on the use of two restriction capilla

Cerebral microcirculation shear stress levels determine Neisseria meningitidis attachment sites along the blood-brain barrier.

Neisseria meningitidis is a commensal bacterium of the human nasopharynx. Occasionally, this bacterium reaches the bloodstream and causes meningitis after crossing the blood-brain barrier by an unknown mechanism. An immunohistological study of a meningococcal sepsis case revealed that neisserial adhesion was restricted to capillaries located in low blood flow regions in the infected organs. This study led to the hypothesis that drag forces encountered by the meningococcus in the bloodstream determine its attachment site in vessels. We therefore investigated the ability of N. meningitidis to bi

Hyperinsulinaemia, insulin resistance, microalbuminuria and the risk of coronary heart disease.

In population studies both hyperinsulinaemia, a marker for insulin resistance, and microalbuminuria have been shown to predict coronary heart disease. Insulin resistance clusters with several standard cardiovascular risk factors, as well as with abnormalities of fibrinolysis, with small, dense, low-density lipoprotein patterns, and with elevated concentrations of proinsulin-like molecules. This makes the independence of the relationship with coronary heart disease difficult to disentangle. Microalbuminuria is associated with a number of abnormalities of risk factors, but the relationship with

Pulmonary vascular dynamics after percutaneous mitral valvotomy.

Hemodynamic studies were performed immediately before, within 1/2 hour, and every 8 hours for 24 hours after percutaneous mitral valvotomy in 22 patients with severe mitral stenosis and pulmonary hypertension. The mean pressure in the left atrium decreased from 27 +/- 2 mm Hg to 14 +/- 1 mm Hg (p less than 0.01) immediately after successful valvotomy. There was no significant further drop in left atrial pressure (or pulmonary capillary wedge pressure) over 24 hours. Mean cardiac output increased from 3.9 +/- 0.3 L/min to 4.6 +/- 0.3 L/min immediately after successful valvotomy (p less than 0.0

Pulmonary effects of crystalloid and colloid resuscitation from hemorrhagic shock in the presence of oleic acid-induced pulmonary capillary injury in the dog.

The effects of resuscitation with crystalloid and colloid solutions in the presence of increased pulmonary capillary permeability were studied. Twenty-four hours after oleic acid administration, dogs were anesthetized and bled to produce hemorrhagic shock. One hour later, resuscitation was performed with saline, 5% albumin, or 6% hydroxyethyl starch solution to restore and then maintain cardiac output at pre-oleic acid values for 6 h. Dogs were recovered and, 24 h later, were reanesthetized for final measurements. Oleic acid administration resulted in increases in pulmonary artery pressure, pu

Multi-analytical platform metabolomic approach to study miltefosine mechanism of action and resistance in Leishmania.

Miltefosine (MT) (hexadecylphosphocholine) was implemented to cope with resistance against antimonials, the classical treatment in Leishmaniasis. Given the scarcity of anti- Leishmania (L) drugs and the increasing appearance of resistance, there is an obvious need for understanding the mechanism of action and development of such resistance. Metabolomics is an increasingly popular tool in the life sciences due to it being a relatively fast and accurate technique that can be applied either with a particular focus or in a global manner to reveal new knowledge about biological systems. Three analy

Cardiogenic Pulmonary Edema.

The initial events in cardiogenic pulmonary edema involve hemodynamic pulmonary congestion with high capillary pressures. This causes increased fluid transfer out of capillaries into the interstitium and alveolar spaces. High capillary pressures can also cause barrier disruption which increases permeability and fluid transfer into the interstitium and alveoli. Fluid in alveoli alters surfactant function and increases surface tension. This can lead to more edema formation and to atelectasis with impaired gas exchange. Patients with barrier disruption have increased levels of surfactant protein

Foetal Development and Placental Health in Response to Apical Periodontitis Induced in Pregnant Wistar Rats.

AIM: This study investigates the relationship between maternal apical periodontitis (AP) and neonatal health. METHODOLOGY: Twenty-four Wistar rats were assigned to three groups: control (CN), one induced apical periodontitis (AP1), and four induced apical periodontitis (AP4). Apical periodontitis was induced for all experimental groups. After 30 days, the rats were mated and sacrificed on the 21st day of gestation. Placental weight, maternal glycemia, insulinemia, insulin resistance, and placental protein levels were analysed. Neonates were evaluated for their number, weight, capillary glycem

Evaluation of common clinical and hemodynamic parameters to pulmonary capillary wedge pressures in patients undergoing right heart catheterization.

INTRODUCTION: A cornerstone of heart failure assessment is the right heart catheterization and the pulmonary capillary wedge pressure measurement it can provide. Clinical and hemodynamic parameters such as weight and jugular venous distention are less invasive measures often used to diagnose, manage, and treat these patients. To date, there is little data looking at the association of these key parameters to measured pulmonary capillary wedge pressure (PCWP). This is a large, retrospective, secondary analysis of a right heart catheterization database comparing clinical and hemodynamic paramete

Insulin-mediated hemodynamic changes are impaired in muscle of Zucker obese rats.

Insulin-mediated hemodynamic effects in muscle were assessed in relation to insulin resistance in obese and lean Zucker rats. Whole-body glucose infusion rate (GIR), femoral blood flow (FBF), hindleg glucose extraction (HGE), hindleg glucose uptake (HGU), 2-deoxyglucose (DG) uptake into muscles of the lower leg (R(g)), and metabolism of infused 1-methylxanthine (1-MX) to measure capillary recruitment were determined for isogylcemic (4.8 +/- 0.2 mmol/l, lean; 11.7 +/- 0.6 mmol/l, obese) insulin-clamped (20 mU. min(-1). kg(-1) x 2 h) and saline-infused control anesthetized age-matched (20 weeks)

Partitioning of pulmonary vascular resistance in primary pulmonary hypertension.

OBJECTIVES: This study sought to determine the site of increased pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) in primary pulmonary hypertension by standard bedside hemodynamic evaluation. BACKGROUND: The measurement of pulmonary vascular pressures at several levels of flow (Q) allows the discrimination between active and passive, flow-dependent changes in mean pulmonary artery pressure (Ppa), and may detect the presence of an increased pulmonary vascular closing pressure. The determination of a capillary pressure (Pc') from the analysis of a Ppa decay curve after balloon occlusion allows the partition

The hemodynamic and cardiovascular effects of near-drowning in hypotonic, isotonic, or hypertonic solutions.

It has been postulated that near-drowning in fresh water may cause hemodilution and hypervolemia due to the hypotonicity of the aspirated water. In contrast, near-drowning in seawater, because of its hypertonicity, may lead to hypovolemic shock. We evaluated the hemodynamic effects of the instillation of 20 mL/kg of solutions of various tonicities (sterile water, 0.225% sodium chloride, 0.45% sodium chloride, normal saline, 2% sodium chloride, and 3% sodium chloride) into the lungs of anesthetized dogs and compared the results with those for control animals who were made anoxic for five minute

Clenbuterol administration does not enhance the efficacy of furosemide in attenuating the exercise-induced pulmonary capillary hypertension in Thoroughbred horses.

The stimulation of pulmonary beta2-adrenergic receptors causes a decrease in vascular resistance. Thus, the present study was carried out to examine whether concomitant administration of clenbuterol-a beta2-adrenergic receptor agonist, to horses premedicated with furosemide would attenuate the exercise-induced pulmonary capillary hypertension to a greater extent than furosemide alone, and in turn, affect the occurrence of exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH). Experiments were carried out on six healthy, sound, exercise-trained Thoroughbred horses. All horses were studied in the control

Pulmonary veno-occlusive disease: illustrative cases and literature review.

Pulmonary veno-occlusive disease (PVOD), also known as "pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) with overt features of venous/capillary involvement", is a rare cause of PAH characterised by substantial small pulmonary vein and capillary involvement, leading to increased pulmonary vascular resistance and right ventricular failure. Environmental risk factors have been associated with the development of PVOD, such as occupational exposure to organic solvents and chemotherapy, notably mitomycin. PVOD may also be associated with a mutation in the EIF2AK4 gene in heritable forms of disease. Distinguis

Pulmonary Hypertension in Aortic and Mitral Valve Disease.

In patients with aortic and/or mitral valve disease the presence of pulmonary hypertension (PH) indicates a decompensated state of the disease with left ventricular and left atrial dysfunction and exhausted compensatory mechanism, i.e., a state of heart failure. Pulmonary hypertension in this context is the consequence of the backwards transmission of elevated left atrial pressure. In this form of PH, pulmonary vascular resistance is initially normal (isolated post-capillary PH). Depending on the extent and chronicity of left atrial pressure elevation additional pulmonary vascular remodeling m

Fetal hypoxemia causes abnormal myocardial development in a preterm ex utero fetal ovine model.

In utero hypoxia is a major cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality and predisposes to adult cardiovascular disease. No therapies exist to correct fetal hypoxia. In a new ex utero fetal support system, we tested the hypothesis that hypoxemic support of the fetus impairs myocardial development, whereas normoxic support allows normal myocardial development. Preterm fetal lambs were connected via umbilical vessels to a low-resistance oxygenator and placed in a sterile-fluid environment. Control normoxic fetuses received normal fetal oxygenation, and hypoxemic fetuses received subphysiologic oxy

Lungs in heart failure.

Lung function abnormalities both at rest and during exercise are frequently observed in patients with chronic heart failure, also in the absence of respiratory disease. Alterations of respiratory mechanics and of gas exchange capacity are strictly related to heart failure. Severe heart failure patients often show a restrictive respiratory pattern, secondary to heart enlargement and increased lung fluids, and impairment of alveolar-capillary gas diffusion, mainly due to an increased resistance to molecular diffusion across the alveolar capillary membrane. Reduced gas diffusion contributes to ex
