We present a patient with bilateral nanophthalmos who had uneventful cataract extraction in the right eye with primary implantation of 3 intraocular lenses (IOLs) of 2 different materials: a 30 diopter (D) acrylic IOL and a 9 D silicone IOL in the capsular bag and a 30 D silicone IOL in the ciliary sulcus. Subsequently, cataract extraction was done in the left eye with bag-sulcus implantation of two 30 D silicone IOLs. The use of 3 IOLs in 1 eye was necessary because the highest available power of acrylic and silicone IOLs at our institution was 30 D. The only short-term complications were tem

BACKGROUND: Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) is the most common complication after cataract surgery, in which increased levels of transforming growth factor-beta 2 (TGF-β2) accelerate PCO formation; however, the pathological mechanisms are not fully understood. This study aims to explore the regulation mechanism of TGF-β2 in PCO formation via its autophagic functions.
METHODS: The autophagic effect of TGF-β2 was detected by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Western blotting, and immunofluorescence analysis. The association between autophagy and the epithelial-mesenchymal transition

BACKGROUND: In HIV-positive patients with necrotising retinitis, well-tolerated lens material as well as minimal invasive surgery to avoid postoperative complications are imperative. Heparin surface-modified PMMA-IOLs as well as acrylic IOLs are associated with less postoperative inflammation than conventional intraocular lenses.
METHODS: In this randomised prospective clinical trial 18 patients received 7 HSM-IOLs through a self-sealing scleral tunnel and 11 foldable Acrysof-IOLs through a self-sealing limbal tunnel incision by the same surgeon. 7 of the 18 eyes were silicone oil-filled befo

INTRODUCTION: The intraocular lens (IOL) can be used as a slow-release drug carrier in cataract surgery to alleviate posterior capsular opacification (PCO). The following is a systematic development of an IOL using methotrexate and the solvent casting process with poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) as a carrier polymer.
METHODS: Different solvents for PLGA and methotrexate were tested for dissolution properties and possible damage to the IOL. The required biological concentration of methotrexate was determined in human capsular bags implanted with an IOL. To detect fibrosis, α-SMA, f-actin

BACKGROUND: Congenital cataracts are lens opacities in one or both eyes of babies or children present at birth. These may cause a reduction in vision severe enough to require surgery. Cataracts are proportionally the most treatable cause of visual loss in childhood, and are a particular problem in low-income countries, where early intervention may not be possible. Paediatric cataracts provide different challenges to those in adults. Intense inflammation, amblyopia (vision is obstructed by cataract from birth which prevents normal development of the visual system), posterior capsule opacificati

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the inhibitory effect of a discontinuous capsular bend created by an intraocular lens (IOL) with a band-shaped loop or a capsule tension ring on migrating lens epithelial cells (LECs).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: To create a sharp bend in the capsule, the round form (shown on cross section) of the open-circular loop of a polymethylmethacrylate IOL was changed to a band-like shape, 1.0 mm wide and 0.2 mm thick. A capsule tension ring of the same shape (on cross section) with a 14-mm diameter was also made. After cataract surgery, this IOL or ring wa

Extracapsular surgery is an ideal type of cataract surgery in combination with lens implantation insofar as stability and fixation of the lens is greatly enhanced. However, a number of complications can be expected. The main probelms of extracapsular surgery is posterior capsule opacification. This is due to regeneration of germinal lens fibers. To prevent this a complete removal of cortical lens matter is advisable, even in lens implantation. This however requires special lenses, which have additional iris fixation.

UNLABELLED: We describe a technique that uses the vitrector to perform successful lens aspiration and posterior chamber intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in children with spherophakia and anterior lens subluxation. After an anterior chamber maintainer is placed, the ocutome is introduced through a limbal incision to perform a circular vitrectorhexis to avoid excessive manipulation of the unstable lens followed by gentle cortex aspiration. A foldable IOL is injected into the sulcus (3-piece IOL) or bag (1-piece IOL) if the capsule is sufficiently stable. Through a pars plana incision, the ocu

Posterior capsular opacification (PCO) is common after cataract surgery. Recurrence is very rare after a successful Yttrium aluminium-garnet (YAG) capsulotomy in adults. We report a case of visual axis re-opacification after a successful YAG capsulotomy for PCO in an adult. A 60-year male underwent phacoemulsification with +20.0 D acrylic hydrophobic intraocular lens implantation and silicon oil removal (SOR) five months after a successful retinal detachment repair. He underwent a capsulotomy after two months of surgery; however, the visual axis re-opacified after three more months. A YAG ante
