[Beware of cat bites].

An 81-year-old male, anticoagulated for atrial fibrillation, presented with a cat bite on his left hand. Despite initial prophylactic antibiotic treatment, the patient developed a flexor sheath infection of the hand. Surgical debridement was necessary and confirmed Pasteurella multocida infection. He was treated with intravenous amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, followed by oral therapy for two weeks. The patient recovered fully, with normal hand function at 12 months. This case underscores the importance of early intervention in cat bites, as they carry a high risk of infection.

Gallbladder carcinoid in a cat.

Carcinoids are rare tumors that originate from neuroendocrine system cells. There has apparently only been 1 report in the veterinary medical literature of a cat with a gallbladder carcinoid, with no long-term follow-up information available from that case. Furthermore, apparently only 9 dogs with gallbladder carcinoids have been reported, again with no long-term follow-up. This case report describes the clinical presentation, surgical appearance, histopathologic and immunohistochemical findings, postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy treatment, and long-term outcome of a domestic longhair cat wi

Caval chemodectoma in a cat.

CASE SUMMARY: An 11-year-old male neutered domestic shorthair cat was presented with a 4-week history of an intermittent cough and dyspnoea. A pleural effusion was identified, which was confirmed as chyle. Echocardiography and CT revealed a 16 mm mass cranial to the heart, which was invading the cranial vena cava. Because of the location of the mass, it was assumed that chylothorax had developed as a result of direct disruption of the thoracic duct by the tumour or secondarily to central venous hypertension. An exploratory thoracotomy was performed, and the mass, which originated within the wa

Acanthamoeba sclerokeratitis in a cat.

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 12-year-old neutered male domestic shorthair cat with chronic anterior uveitis and secondary glaucoma of the right eye was examined for persistent blepharospasm 2 weeks after corneal debridement and grid keratotomy for nonhealing superficial ulcerative keratitis. CLINICAL FINDINGS: Examination of the right eye revealed a central superficial corneal ulcer associated with corneal epithelial and subepithelial infiltrates and mild aqueous flare. Structures consistent with amoeboid cysts and trophozoites were detected in the cornea by in vivo confocal microscopy. Suppurative ke

Cat scratch esophagus.

The cat scratch esophagus is an uncommon entity. The first case described in the literature of this type of lesions was published in 2007 and was located in the colon. There are two cases described in the esophagus, this has been the first detected by endoscopic capsule. It is defined by the presence of linear, erythematous, shiny and superficial breaks of the mucosa without significant hemorrhage associated. The diagnosis is morphological. Even though the etiology is unknown, it has been postulated that the main pathogenic mechanism is barotrauma secondary to insufflation. It has also been de

Sublingual sialocele in a cat.

CASE SUMMARY: A 1-year-old male neutered cat was presented with a right-sided swelling of the floor of the oral cavity, causing dysphagia and hypersialorrhoea for 2 months. Fine-needle aspiration of the mass and CT were suggestive of a right sublingual sialocoele with no obvious cause. Surgical resection of the ipsilateral sublingual-mandibular salivary gland complex, as well as marsupialisation of the mucocoele, was performed. The cat recovered uneventfully. Histopathological examination of the resected specimen confirmed the diagnosis. No sign of recurrence was reported 7 months after surger

Odontogenic keratocyst in a cat.

Odontogenic cysts are derived from odontogenic epithelium, can be locally invasive and destructive and have been reported rarely in cats. A 16-year-old, male domestic shorthair cat had a 3-year history of a slowly progressive, right mandibular swelling. Intraoral dental radiographs revealed a multilocular, radiolucent, cystic mass within the right mandible that extended from the distal aspect of the canine tooth to the mesial aspect of the fourth premolar tooth. Radiographically, the mass was associated with distortion and regional destruction of the right mandibular bone and resorption of reg

Oesophageal angioleiomyosarcoma in a cat.

A female spayed domestic longhair cat aged 3 years and 9 months was referred for investigation of regurgitation and weight loss of 2 months' duration. Thoracic radiographs revealed a soft tissue mass within the cranial mediastinum causing focal oesophageal dilation. Computed tomography confirmed a contrast-enhancing mass located cranial to the heart base, possibly originating from the oesophagus. Exploratory thoracotomy revealed an intramural soft tissue mass within the ventral oesophageal wall. Surgical excision of the mass and reconstruction of the oesophagus around an oesophageal tube was p

Cat scratch disease.

Approximately 24,000 people are infected with cat scratch disease (CSD) every year. CSD is caused by the bacteria Bartonella henselae, a gram-negative bacteria most often transmitted to humans through a bite or scratch from an infected cat or kitten. Although CSD is often a benign and self-limiting condition, it can affect any major organ system in the body, manifesting in different ways and sometimes leading to lifelong sequelae. It is a disease that is often overlooked in primary care because of the wide range of symptom presentation and relative rarity of serious complications. It is import

[Megaesophagus in the dog and cat].

Megaesophagus is a disorder of the esophagus characterized by diffuse dilation and decreased peristalsis. It is classified into congenital and acquired forms. Gastrointestinal, endocrine, immune-mediated, neuromuscular, paraneoplastic, and toxic disorders have been associated with acquired megaesophagus. Common clinical signs of megaesophagus are regurgitation, weight loss, coughing, and halitosis. Most cases of megaesophagus can be diagnosed using thoracic radiography; however, diagnosing the underlying cause requires a thorough history and additional diagnostics. The treatment, management, a

Acremonium keratomycosis in a cat.

A 14-year-old, female spayed Domestic Short-haired cat was presented for evaluation of progressive superficial corneal ulceration with mucoid ocular discharge, blepharospasm, and conjunctival hyperemia OD. Upon examination, ulcerative keratitis with stromal loss, chemosis, corneal edema, miosis, aqueous flare, and hyphema were noted. Corneal cytology revealed branching, septate fungal hyphae with bulbous terminations and associated ovoid structures, with suppurative inflammation. Fungal culture of corneal swabs confirmed the presence of Acremonium, although PCR of the cytology sample was negat

Intrathoracic lipoma in a cat.

A 10 yr old female cat presented for an acute onset of back arching, regurgitation, and open mouth breathing. Radiographs indicated the presence of a large intrathoracic mass. Computed tomography confirmed the presence of a large mass of fatty density in the dorso-caudal mediastinum. The mass was removed via right intercostal thoracotomy, and histopathology confirmed the mass as a lipoma. The cat was continuing to recover well as of 21 mo after surgery. This is the first reported case of an intrathoracic lipoma in a cat.

Olfactory neuroblastoma in a cat.

CASE SUMMARY: A 12.5-year-old castrated male domestic shorthair cat was presented for evaluation of dyspnea. Physical examination suggested upper airway disease. Computed tomography revealed the presence of a nasopharyngeal mass. Biopsies obtained via rhinoscopy led to a diagnosis of olfactory neuroblastoma. CLINICAL CHALLENGES: Olfactory neuroblastoma (or esthesioneuroblastoma) is a rare malignant neoplasm that arises from olfactory neuroepithelium. It was first described in human medicine in 1924. Clinical signs are variable, and diagnosis may prove challenging as this tumor, which is a dif
