The management of thoracic outlet syndrome induced by bilateral cervical ribs in young, female athlete - a case report.

INTRODUCTION: The presence of additional cervical ribs is a rare and relatively unknown pathology. The brachial plexus is most often compressed. Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS) is the one of discussed of mixed compression syndromes, due to diagnostic difficulties and the lack of evidence to resolve the effectiveness of surgical treatment over conservative treatment. CASE REPORT: Presentation of the case of a 22-year-old female athlete with cervical ribs with neurogenic TOS symptoms and presentation of the rehabilitation model and its results. Functional diagnosis included TOS specific clinical

Cervical ribs in human early life: morphological variability and first identification as a morbidity criterion in a past population.

Despite the medical literature on supernumerary cervical ribs in extant adult samples, little is known about their development and occurrence in early infancy. The documentation of cervical ribs in modern samples of fetuses and neonates is indeed affected by ethical as well as technical limitations. The aim of the present study was to investigate their frequencies and morphological variability in the first known archaeological collection of very young children with this anatomical variant. The study sample comes from the 8B-51 necropolis on the Saï island (Sudan) and dates to the Classic Kerma

Thoracic outlet syndrome with right subclavian artery dilatation in a child - transaxillary resection of the pediatric cervical rib.

Cervical rib is a well-documented congenital anomaly, and thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) with vascular compression is extremely rare in childhood. The subclavian artery, subclavian vein, brachial plexus, or a combination of these can be affected in this syndrome. We present a case of TOS in an eight-year-old boy and describe the rare finding of subclavian artery compression with post-stenotic dilatation and severe brachial plexus compression symptoms. The patient underwent right transaxillary resection of the first thoracic and cervical rib. The presentation is unique and may be elusive.

Klippel-Feil anomaly with associated rudimentary cervical ribs in a human skeleton: case report and review of the literature.

Anomalies of the cervical spine are intriguing anatomically and often come to clinical attention. Fusion of one or more cervical vertebral segments, the Klippel- Feil anomaly (KFA), often causes increased motion at the vertebral segments superior to and inferior to the fused level with a resultant premature wear of these joints. We report an adult male skeleton with fusion of his C6 and C7 vertebral bodies (Type II KFA). A remnant of the intervertebral disc space was noted and bilateral rudimentary cervical ribs were observed emanating from the C7 vertebrae. Excessive joint degeneration was no

Undiagnosed bilateral complete cervical rib with subclavian artery aneurysm presenting as acute ischaemic limb following high-altitude expedition.

Arterial thoracic outlet syndrome is relatively rare and often exclusively seen in the presence of bony anomalies. High-altitude (HA) travel is commonly associated with thrombosis; however, arterial thromboembolism is less frequently described. We describe a case of a young man with undiagnosed bilateral cervical rib, who went for an HA trek, subsequent to which developed acute limb ischaemia of right arm. Diagnostic workup revealed a subclavian artery aneurysm as well along with complete bony bilateral cervical ribs. Thoracic outlet syndrome should be kept as a differential diagnosis in a cas

Segmental Megaesophagus Secondary to Extraluminal Esophageal Stenosis Caused by Transitional Seventh Cervical Vertebra and Supernumerary Ribs in a Goat.

A 4-year-old Nigerian Dwarf wether presented for chronic regurgitation and cervical swelling of three years duration. Physical examination revealed a large ventral cervical mass. The goat made repeated attempts to swallow and regurgitate, but the mass did not change significantly in size. Cervical radiographs revealed segmental esophageal dilation to the level of the thoracic inlet. CT revealed a transitional seventh cervical vertebra with fused right and left ribs, resulting in extramural esophageal compression and obstruction at the level of the thoracic inlet. This is the first report of a

Arterial thoracic outlet syndrome caused by a cervical rib: a combined thoracoscopic and supraclavicular approach for 'en bloc'-resection.

A cervical rib is the cause of ∼5% of thoracic outlet syndromes (TOS). We report the case of a patient with arterial TOS due to the presence of a cervical rib, managed by combined thoracoscopic and supraclavicular approach. An 18-year-old female patient presented with symptoms of arterial TOS. Magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography angiography scans showed a tortuous subclavian artery due to a fused cervical and 1st rib. Three-port thoracoscopy was performed, which allowed to mobilize the ventral part of the 1st rib. Supraclavicular access allowed mobilization as well as central di

Cervical Rib Prevalence and its Association with Thoracic Outlet Syndrome: A Meta-Analysis of 141 Studies with Surgical Considerations.

BACKGROUND: Cervical ribs (CR) are supernumerary ribs that arise from the seventh cervical vertebra. In the presence of CR, the boundaries of the interscalene triangle can be further constricted and result in neurovascular compression and thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS). The aim of our study was to provide a comprehensive evidence-based assessment of CR prevalence and their association with TOS as well as surgical approach to excision of CR and surgical patients' characteristics. METHODS: A thorough search of major electronic databases was conducted to identify any relevant studies. Data on th

Compression of the lower trunk of the brachial plexus by a cervical rib in two adolescent girls: case reports and surgical treatment.

Presence of a cervical rib in children is extremely rare, particularly when symptoms of compression of the lower trunk of the brachial plexus occur. We present two cases with such a condition, where two young girls, 11 and 16 years of age were treated by resection of the cervical rib after a supraclavicular exploration of the lower trunk of the brachial plexus. The procedure led to successful results, objectively verified with tests in a work simulator, at one year follow-up.

Familial segregation of cervical ribs, Sprengel anomaly, preaxial polydactyly, anal atresia, and urethral obstruction: a new syndrome?

In a consanguineous Jewish family originating from Bombay, India, the propositus presented with anal atresia, micropenis, urethral obstruction with secondary prune belly, omphalocele, patent urachus, and cryptorchidism. The kidneys were dysplastic and he had the Potter phenotype with limb deformities. Additional findings included IUGR with microcephaly, congenital heart defects, spinal anomalies, and hypoplastic lungs. The mother and all three sisters had cervical ribs, and she and one sister had 11 pairs of thoracic ribs. The other two sisters had chronic immune thrombopenia. One of those had

Exercise-induced thoracic outlet syndrome and concomitant osteomyelitis in cervical rib with a possible familial origin: A case report.

Cervical ribs are rare and usually asymptomatic. Occasionally, they can cause nerve impingements and compressive symptoms. In cervical ribs, osteomyelitis secondary to trauma is unheard of. We report such a case made more interesting by the familial presence of bilateral cervical ribs in two generations, indicating a familial origin.

Rib Hyperostosis as a Risk Factor for Poor Prognosis in Cervical Spine Injury Patients With Diffuse Idiopathic Skeletal Hyperostosis.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective multi-center study. OBJECTIVE: To identify the morphological features of costovertebral joints and ribs in surgically managed cervical injury patients with diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) and to examine its impact on their vital prognosis. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Several reports have indicated that DISH is an independent risk factor for mortality after spinal fracture. The reason for the high mortality in cervical injury patients with DISH is unclear, although some reports have suggested a possible association between pulmonary complications an

Bilateral cervical ribs causing cerebellar stroke and arterial thoracic outlet syndrome: a case report and review of the literature.

Stroke is an exceedingly rare presentation of arterial thoracic outlet syndrome (aTOS). This report describes a case of cerebellar stroke secondary to aTOS and reviews the literature. A 56-year-old woman with no previous history of stroke or arm ischemia presented with vertigo. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging confirmed a left cerebellar ischemic stroke. She subsequently developed ischemia of her left arm, which was treated by a thromboembolectomy. CT angiography revealed bilateral cervical ribs along with bilateral subclavian artery aneurysms. Staged resection of the ce

Torsion and bending in the neck and tail of sauropod dinosaurs and the function of cervical ribs: insights from functional morphology and biomechanics.

The long necks of sauropods have been subject to many studies regarding their posture and flexibility. Length of the neck varies among groups. Here, we investigate neck posture and morphology in several clades from a mechanical viewpoint. Emphasis is put on comparing sauropod necks and tails with structures in living archosaurs and mammals. Differences in the use made of necks and tails lead to clear-cut differences in the mechanical loads occurring in the same models. Ways of sustaining loads are identified by theoretical considerations. If the observed skeletal structures are suited to resis
