Comparison of the Reynell Developmental Language Scale II and the Galker test of word-recognition-in-noise in Danish day-care children.

OBJECTIVE: To search for predictive factors for language development measured by two receptive language tests for children, the Galker test (a word-recognition-in-noise test) testing hearing and vocabulary, and the Danish version of Reynell Developmental Language Scale (2nd revision, RDLS II) test, a language comprehension test. The study analysed if information about background variables and parents and pre-school teachers was predictive for test scores; if earlier middle ear disease, actual hearing loss and tympanometry was important for language development; and if the two receptive tests d

Autism spectrum disorder: communicative profile before and after remote family guidance.

PURPOSE: To compare the communicative profile of children diagnosed with or at risk for autism spectrum disorder before and after speech-language-hearing guidance (indirect treatment). METHODS: The study included caregivers and/or parents of children aged 2 to 9 years with a diagnosis of or at risk for autism spectrum disorder, with or without speech-language-hearing therapy. Before the intervention, caregivers answered the sample characterization form and clinical history. They also sent a 10-minute audio and video recording of interaction between the child and a familiar adult for pragmatic

Tutorial: Exploring the Speech-Language Pathologist's Role in Childhood Blindness and Low Vision.

PURPOSE: Children with vision differences face unique challenges in accessing classroom communication, which can affect language development, academic achievement, and social participation. To ensure effective communication, professionals must understand each child's diverse access needs and individual preferences. Professionals must also be aware of the nature of the child's lived visual experience, including the strategies that allow the child with low vision to access sustained and meaningful vision, compared to those strategies preferred by the child who is blind. METHOD: This tutorial di

Opportunities to Respond During Dyadic Caregiver-Child and Naturalistic Family Interactions Among Children With Down Syndrome: A Preliminary Investigation.

PURPOSE: Dyadic caregiver-child interactions are commonly used to examine children's language learning environments. However, children frequently interact with multiple caregivers and/or siblings if they come from homes with multiple caregivers and siblings. Thus, we examined if and how caregiver opportunities to respond (OTRs) varied when sampled across three interaction configurations. METHOD: Twelve children with Down syndrome (Mage = 40.82 months) and their biological parents participated in the current study. We collected separate mother-child and father-child dyadic interactions and one

[Speech and language development disorders in children].

Despite their frequency and clinical relevance, disturbances in the acquirement of language skills are not infrequently overlooked or are recognized too late, in particular when the problem is speech understanding, or when behavioral disturbances predominate. Diagnostic guidelines differentiate between circumscribed articulation disorders and expressive and receptive speech problems. The diagnostic work-up must take account of the changes in symptoms occurring during the course of the child's development. Mental comorbidity may be observed in every second speech-disordered child. Linguistic interaction: the active role of parents in speech therapy for cleft palate patients.

As speech and language intervention becomes more naturalistic, it seems obvious that language and other developmental competencies are, in a strong way, a function of the quality and quantity of relationships in which the child evolves. This paper compares two different speech therapy groups of cleft palate children. Children included in the first group received therapy alone with the speech pathologist, whereas children from the second group received speech therapy accompanied by their mothers. The purpose was to evaluate and provide the mothers with interaction modes for facilitating communi

[Management of developmental speech-language disorders in children : Part 2: Intervention and remediation].

In the first part of this seminar paper, speech-language development tests were presented and the importance of the differential diagnosis of the underlying causes of the diagnosed language development disorder was discussed. The second part focuses on counseling and training of the parents, as well as the different treatment methods used for speech-language therapy for affected children in out- and inpatient settings. These procedures should be applied according to the individual developmental age. The official guidelines are to be respected, especially for medical speech-language therapy. Ge

Phonological awareness abilities of a child with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome before and after speech therapy.

The aim of the present study was to characterize the phonological awareness abilities of a child with Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) before and after speech-language therapy. The participant was a 6-year-old girl, first-grade Elementary School student, with AIDS acquired by vertical transmission. The child's phonological awareness abilities were evaluated using the Instrument of Sequential Evaluation of Phonological Awareness (CONFIAS). After this first evaluation, a closed therapeutic program (15 sessions) for phonological awareness was developed, consisting of activities for sylla

Australian caregiver's experiences and needs when their child has Childhood Apraxia of speech: A qualitative study.

PURPOSE: Effective design of speech-language pathology services for evidence-based practice requires attention to the needs of consumers and their families. Caregivers of children with childhood apraxia of speech often face challenges ensuring their child's needs are met and may experience anxiety and guilt. However, little is known about their experiences and needs in an Australian context. This study explored Australian caregivers' (a) lived experience of having a child with childhood apraxia of speech and (b) their perceptions of their family's needs. METHOD: Online focus groups or intervi

A cross-linguistic approach to treating speech sound disorders in bilingual children.

The present study explores generalisation of production skills across languages when treating speech sound disorders in bilingual children. Early work suggests that treating shared sounds across languages may facilitate cross-linguistic generalisation. Thus, selecting shared sounds across languages as targets may have clinical advantages. In this study, we asked if cross-linguistic generalisation can be facilitated for targets using shared sounds in bilingual children with phonological delays from Spanish (L1) into English (L2) when treating only the L1. Two Spanish-English bilingual children

Parenting Practices and Associations with Development Delays among Young Children in Dominican Republic.

BACKGROUND: According to the World Health Organization, >200 million children in low- and middle-income countries experience developmental delays. However, household structure and parenting practices have been minimally explored as potential correlates of developmental delay in low- and middle-income countries, despite potential as areas for intervention. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to examine associations of developmental delays with use of World Health Organization-recommended parenting practices among a clinic-based cohort of children aged 6-60 months attending in La Romana,

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on early childhood development assessed with the Denver II developmental screening test in a single center.

The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted early childhood development globally by altering social environments and limiting access to early stimulation and care. While the broader consequences of the pandemic on child development have been widely speculated, objective data from structured developmental assessments remain limited. This retrospective cross-sectional study compared developmental outcomes of children aged 0 to 6 years who underwent the Denver II Developmental Screening Test at a single child psychiatry center in Kütahya, Turkey. The study included 709 children, with 431 assessed in 2019

Temporal stability of parent-reported behavior problems in late talkers over 2 years: a prospective case-control study from toddlerhood to preschool age.

BACKGROUND: Late talking (LT) in toddlers is a risk factor for language weakness that may interfere with the development of using language to regulate behavior and emotion and contribute to the development of behavior problems from early childhood. This study examined the temporal stability of parent-reported behavior problems among Mandarin-speaking LT toddlers from ages 2 to 4 in Taiwan. METHODS: Thirty-one LT and 31 typical language development (TLD) toddlers were assessed for their vocabulary production at age 2 with the Words and Sentences Forms of the MacArthur-Bates Communicative Devel

Quantitative genome-wide association analyses of receptive language in the Danish High Risk and Resilience Study.

BACKGROUND: One of the most basic human traits is language. Linguistic ability, and disability, have been shown to have a strong genetic component in family and twin studies, but molecular genetic studies of language phenotypes are scarce, relative to studies of other cognitive traits and neurodevelopmental phenotypes. Moreover, most genetic studies examining such phenotypes do not incorporate parent-of-origin effects, which could account for some of the heritability of the investigated trait. We performed a genome-wide association study of receptive language, examining both child genetic effe

Speech, Language, and Reading in 10-Year-Olds With Cleft: Associations With Teasing, Satisfaction With Speech, and Psychological Adjustment.

BACKGROUND: Despite the use of multidisciplinary services, little research has addressed issues involved in the care of those with cleft lip and/or palate across disciplines. The aim was to investigate associations between speech, language, reading, and reports of teasing, subjective satisfaction with speech, and psychological adjustment. DESIGN: Cross-sectional data collected during routine, multidisciplinary assessments in a centralized treatment setting, including speech and language therapists and clinical psychologists. PARTICIPANTS: Children with cleft with palatal involvement aged 10

Education and rehabilitation of deaf children with cochlear implants: a multidisciplinary task.

In the last decade the population of deaf children has changed dramatically in a lot of countries, especially in those where universal neonatal hearing screening, early multi-disciplinary support, digital hearing aids and cochlear implants are available. Most of these children can acquire intelligible spoken language and choose spoken language as their main means of communication and for access to education, because they go to mainstream schools in larger proportions, and fewer to schools for the deaf. Mainstream placement does not eliminate the need for services, which will vary depending upo

Prenatal alcohol exposure and communication, behavior, and nonverbal intelligence of 3 school-age children.

Associations of prenatal alcohol exposure in speech, language, behavioral, and intellectual development were investigated in three school-aged children diagnosed with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, accompanied by Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Each child showed similar patterns of moderate-to-severe dysfunctional behavior; however, their scores on speech, language and nonverbal intellectual measures were highly variable.

Dysregulated Screen Exposure Is Associated With Severity of Language and Communication Impairments in Children With Developmental Disorders.

AIM: While rising amounts of screen exposure for young children are reported, speech and language developmental disorders (DD) are also increasing. Vulnerable groups with combined risk factors are more affected, but less represented in the research. Our goal is to assess the amount and context of screen exposure in children referred for treatment and relate this to their language, cognitive and communication impairment. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of medical records (parent ratings, child observations, standardised tests) for a random sample of 3-8-year-old children assessed by a multidis

Fracture-dislocation of the shoulder in a child: case report.

This is a case of an 11-year old girl with a delayed diagnosis of a shoulder fracture-dislocation. Shoulder dislocations are rare, and proximal humerus fractures are uncommon. A fracture-dislocation in a child is, to our knowledge, as yet unrepresented in the English-language literature. The child's injury resolved without recurrence.
