Apert syndrome is a genetic disorder known as acrocephalopolysyndactyly type 1 caused by mutations in the fibroblast growth factor receptor 2 and characterized by coronal craniosynostosis, symmetric bone and skin syndactyly of hands and feet, and craniofacial dysmorphic features. The estimated prevalence of this syndrome is 10 to 15.5 cases per 1,000,000 live births. Apert syndrome has considerable clinical variability. We present a case of Apert syndrome and associated features reported to the National Registry of Congenital Anomalies of Argentina (RENAC). The reported case had omphalocele, e

We describe prenatal diagnosis in a male fetus at 21 weeks of gestation with atelosteogenesis type I (AO I). Fetal ultrasonography (US) revealed absent or deficient ossification of the posterior neural arches of the thoracic spine, humeri, radii, ulnae, fibulae, and short tubular bones other than the distal phalanges, in addition to extremely short, thick femora. Fetal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) using an ultrafast imaging sequence depicted dysmorphic features, pulmonary hypoplasia, and large cisterna magna. Postmortem radiographs warranted a diagnosis of AO I. Autopsy corroborated not on

Ultrafast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequences have changed the use of MRI to evaluate fetal abnormalities. Currently, the best application is the evaluation of suspected brain abnormalities found on ultrasound. MRI differentiates the various types of fetal ventriculomegaly. Superior posterior fossa visualization allows differentiation of Dandy-Walker malformation from a large cisterna magna. Anomalies of the corpus callosum can be seen. MRI also is valuable in the evaluation of fetal giant neck masses for planning delivery of the baby and surgery for life-threatening airway obstruction.

The Marden-Walker syndrome is characterized by a mask-like face with blepharophimosis, micrognathia, cleft or high-arched palate, low-set ears, congenital joint contractures, decreased muscular mass, failure to thrive and psychomotor retardation. We report a boy with a phenotype mostly resembling the condition named Marden-Walker syndrome, with many of the criteria proposed for diagnosing this particular phenotype. In addition he had hypoplastic corpus callosum, cerebellar vermis hypoplasia, enlarged cisterna magna and vertebral abnormalities. During pregnancy there were reduced fetal movement

We studied 55 cases of cerebellar atrophy identified by computerized tomography. Atrophy was determined by subjective assessment and objective measurements (superior cerebellar cistern, fourth ventricle, and brainstem). Different patterns of cerebellar atrophy were related to clinical diagnoses. A high incidence of vermal atrophy was observed in primary cerebellar degeneration and chronic alcoholism. More than half the patients with alcoholism had hemispheral atrophy. Vermal atrophy and enlargement of superior cerebellar cisterns (but not hemispheral atrophy) were associated with carcinomatous

Artificial subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) produced by injection of autologous blood into the cisterna magna in dogs gave rise to considerable narrowing or spasm of the basilar artery and its branches, including the posterior cerebral arteries, as demonstrated by cerebral angiography. Repeated cisternal injections of blood at various intervals produced more severe spasm than a single injection. After perfusion-fixation of the brain, the cerebral arteries were examined by light and electron microscopy. None of the animals showed abnormalities in the intima or media of the vessel walls. Of two patients who had acute neurologic damage from cisternal punctures, one died 17 hours following a tap which produced major subarachnoid hemorrhage, the other patient recovered from probable brain stem infarction associated with cisterna magna amphotericin injection. Subarachnoid hemorrhage is the commonest major complication of cisternal puncture, with at least 30 reported fatalities. Other serious complications result from direct puncture of brain substance.Cisternal puncture is not an appropriate alternative to a difficult lumbar puncture, and indications for its use are limited. BACKGROUND: Neuroendoscopy is currently recommended as the first choice to treat posterior fossa arachnoid cysts. It has proven to be effective, providing improved outcome, and safe, having a low complication rate. Compared to craniotomy and shunt placement, it has lower surgical morbidity, minimizing or avoiding risks of subdural fluid collections, shunt infection, malfunction, overdrainage, and dependence. Usually, rigid scopes maneuvered through a suboccipital approach are used. When symptomatic obstructive hydrocephalus develops, CSF diversion is the first aim of surgery.
METHODS: In thes

1 Noradrenaline administered into the third ventricle of the brain (IIIv) of both conscious and anaesthetized cats induced increases in blood pressure accompanied by small and variable heart rate effects. The pressor responses were reduced after autonomic ganglion blockade indicating their likely central origin. 2 Noradrenaline when administered either into a lateral cerebral ventricle (i.c.v.) in conscious and anaesthetized cats or into the cisterna magna (i.c.) in anaesthetized cats induced falls in blood pressure accompanied by bradycardia. 3 Pressor responses to IIIv noradrenaline in consc

When the original idea was conceived 8 years ago to develop a surgical technique for the treatment of fetal hydrocephalus, the pathway towards prenatal surgery for this affection was totally unexplored. The operation appeared to be feasible because of the possibility of a ventriculo-amniotic shunt. The most important steps in our experimental studies in the ewe were creation of a fetal hydrocephalus by injection of a suspension of kaolin powder into cisterna magna; the treatment of the hydrocephalus by a mini-ventriculo-amniotic shunt, by cutting the cardiac end of a low pressure Pudenz pediat

The Dandy-Walker syndrome (DWS) encompasses a group of anatomical midline cerebellar disorders with potential shared embryological origins, including the classic Dandy-Walker malformation, Blake's pouch cyst, and mega cisterna magna. Genetic factors, chromosomal abnormalities, and environmental influences contribute to its etiology. DWS, occurring in 1 in 25,000 to 35,000 live births, often presents with hydrocephalus and other central nervous system anomalies. Clinical manifestations vary, with symptoms appearing from neonatal to adult stages. Diagnosis is performed through neuroimaging, eval

OBJECT: Besides mechanical damage done by the enlarging ventricles, biochemical impairment in the periventricular tissue represents an important factor resulting from or contributing to the pathogenesis of hydrocephalus. In this study the changes in periventricular region total sialic acid levels in the early stage of experimentally induced hydrocephalus were evaluated.
METHODS: Hydrocephalus was induced in 3-week-old rat pups by kaolin injection into the cisterna magna. Ten days after hydrocephalus induction rats were sacrificed and total sialic acid levels in the periventricular area were d

A syndrome is reported of congenital non-progressive, gradually slightly improving, ataxia in 3 out of 5 male sibs, issues of a first-order consanguineous mating. Additional characteristic features included: moderate microcephaly, generalised muscle weakness and hypotonia, nystagmus, and moderate mental retardation. A pyramidal syndrome of hyperreflexia and Babinski signs, without any spasticity, became manifest in the 2nd or 3rd year of life. In all three, the caudal part of the vermis was absent, the enlarged IVth ventricle opening up via Magendie's foramen into the cisterna magna. The middl

Considering the possibility of a paracellular pathway for edema resolution, we studied the intracerebral movement of proteins and ionic lanthanum in rats with experimental hydrocephalus. Hydrocephalus was induced by injection of kaolin suspension into the cisterna magna. After induction of hydrocephalus, horseradish peroxidase (HRP), microperoxidase (MP), or lanthanum chloride (LaCl3) were perfused into the ventricle system. HRP and MP were localized mainly in the intercellular spaces between ependymal cells, glial cells, and in perivascular spaces and were restricted by endothelial tight junc

The effect of haemodilution with Dextran 60 on experimental cerebral oedema produced by the modified method of Ishii, Hayner, Kelly & Evans (1959) is described. The intracranial pressure was measured from the cisterna magna or epidurally in the parieto-occipital region. In the group of cats subjected to haemodilution, with a haematocrit of 27.20 +/- 1.48%, the intracranial pressure first increased by 500% and, after 1.5 h, began to fall gradually so that at the end of the experiment it was only 160% of initial value. In the other experimental group in which haemodilution with a haematocrit of

Airway vagal nerves play a predominant role in the neural control of the airway, and augmented airway vagal activity is known to play important roles in the pathogenesis of some chronic inflammatory airway diseases. Several lines of evidence indicate that dysfunctional central orexinergic system is closely related to the severity of airway diseases, however, whether orexins affect airway vagal activity is unknown. This study investigates whether and how orexin-A regulates the activity of medullary airway vagal preganglionic neurons (AVPNs). The expression of orexin receptor type 1 (OX1R) and t

BACKGROUND: Posterior cerebral blood flow is regulated by the basilar arteries (BAs). Vasospasm of BAs can occur after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Superior cervical sympathetic ganglia (SCG) fibers have a vasoconstrictor effect on the BA. We aimed to investigate the relationship between the degenerated neuron density of the SCG and the severity of BA vasospasm after experimental SAH.
METHODS: Twenty-four rabbits were used. Five were used as the control group, and 5 were used as the sham group. Experimental SAHs were performed in the remaining 14 animals (study group) by injecting homologou
