Fundamental classification of perinatal death. Validation of a new classification system of perinatal death.

OBJECTIVE: To validate a newly introduced classification system for the registration of perinatal mortality. DESIGN: Descriptive. SETTING: Dutch Healthcare region Delft-Westland-Oostland (DWO). MATERIAL AND METHODS: In a 10-years period (1983-1992), all cases of perinatal death with a birthweight above 500 g (n=239) were included into the study. Six assessors: four gynaecologists and two paediatricians were asked to classify all cases using a classification model proposed by the authors. This model is based on the underlying cause of death using simple principles of obstetrical and neonatal

Classification of posterior fracture dislocation of the hip joint: a modification of the Thompsen Epstein classification.

The purpose of this paper was to describe a classification of posterior fracture dislocations of the hip joint, which would highlight the important aspects of managing this injury and more closely correlate with the prognosis. During the period from July 1994 to September 1997, the senior author operated on 60 posterior fracture dislocations of the hip joint. The results of the surgery were scored according to our ability to accurately anatomically reconstruct the acetabulum. We found that the degree of comminution was a greater determent of whether we could achieve an anatomical reconstructio

Cutaneous lymphomas: a proposal for a unified approach to classification using the R.E.A.L./WHO Classification.

BACKGROUND: The classification of cutaneous lymphomas has been controversial. The EORTC has proposed that conventional classification schemes are not suitable for cutaneous lymphomas, and that a unique classification system is required. DESIGN: The authors review the suitability of the R.E.A.L. Classification for cutaneous lymphomas, and compare it with the newly proposed EORTC system. The principles of the R.E.A.L. Classification have been adopted by the WHO committees for the classification of hematopoietic and lymphoid neoplasms. Each disease is defined as a distinct entity based on an int

A group study for the classification of anorectal anomalies in Japan with comments to the International Classification (1970).

A study group was formed to undertake further investigation of the problems involved in the classification of anorectal anomalies. At first, a registration form including standardized techniques for clinical and roentogenologic investigation was defined, and then 254 cases were collected and analyzed by referring these materials to the International Classification by the Melbourne group in 1970. Our analysis disclosed: (1) It is imperative to establish a registration form with footnotes describing standardized techniques for clinical and roentogenologic investigations; (2) The rectourethral fi

[A proposal of a T.N.M. type of classification of the ear. O.P.A.C. classification of chronic surgical otitis].

With the advent of modern otology, cophosurgeons anxious to compare their results soon became aware of the need for a "T.N.M" type of classification for the ear. The classification described here by the authors is, in principle, a classification of the "T.N.M" type: that is, a purely descriptive classification without prognostic, pathogenetic or therapeutic pretensions. This "O.P.A.C." classification is based on a description of 4 main characteristics: 1) the existence and characteristics of potential otorrhoea, described under the letter C; 2) the characteristics of potential perforation of t

Mayo Clinic classification of presacral tumors: evolution of classifications and systematic review of pathologies.

BACKGROUND: Presacral tumours are rare, heterogeneous lesions. Historical classification systems for presacral tumours have provided a valuable framework, but were based on limited available data. This study aimed to develop a contemporary classification aligned with current tumour entities and clinical practice. METHODS: A prospectively registered systematic review of surgically managed presacral tumours published from 1975 to 2025 was combined with a retrospective multisite institutional surgical pathology review from 1986 to 2025. Pathological descriptors were extracted, cross-referenced,

Classification of systemic lupus erythematosus: From the development of classification criteria to a new taxonomy?

SLE is a highly variable systemic autoimmune disease. Its immunopathological effector phase is partly understood. However, the background of its variability is not. SLE classification criteria have been relying on the clinical manifestations and standard autoimmune serology. This still holds true for the 2019 EULAR/ACR classification criteria. On one hand, this has led to significant precision in defining patients with SLE. On the other hand, the information in the criteria neither helps understanding the individual patient's pathophysiology, nor does it predict the efficacy of the available i

A proposed cleaning classification system for reusable medical devices to complement the Spaulding classification.

A central tenet in infection prevention is application of the Spaulding classification system for the safe use of medical devices. Initially defined in the 1950s, this system defines devices and surfaces as being critical, semi-critical or non-critical depending on how they will be used on a patient. Different levels of antimicrobial treatment, defined as various levels of disinfection or sterilization, are deemed appropriate to reduce patient risk of infection. However, a focus on microbial inactivation is insufficient to address this concern, which has been particularly highlighted in routin

Degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis: review of current classifications and proposal of a novel classification system.

PURPOSE: To review existing classification systems for degenerative spondylolisthesis (DS), propose a novel classification designed to better address clinically relevant radiographic and clinical features of disease, and determine the inter- and intraobserver reliability of this new system for classifying DS. METHODS: The proposed classification system includes four components: 1) segmental dynamic instability, 2) location of spinal stenosis, 3) sagittal alignment, and 4) primary clinical presentation. To establish the reliability of this system, 12 observers graded 10 premarked test cases tw

Classification of parotidectomy: a proposed modification to the European Salivary Gland Society classification system.

Parotidectomy remains the mainstay of treatment for both benign and malignant lesions of the parotid gland. There exists a wide range of possible surgical options in parotidectomy in terms of extent of parotid tissue removed. There is increasing need for uniformity of terminology resulting from growing interest in modifications of the conventional parotidectomy. It is, therefore, of paramount importance for a standardized classification system in describing extent of parotidectomy. Recently, the European Salivary Gland Society (ESGS) proposed a novel classification system for parotidectomy. Th

Classification of non-Hodgkin lymphoma in Algeria according to the World Health Organization classification.

The relative distribution of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) subtypes differs markedly around the world. The aim of this study was to report this distribution in Algeria. A panel of four hematopathologists classified 197 consecutive cases according to the World Health Organization classification, including 87.3% B-cell and 12.7% T- or natural killer (NK)-cell NHLs. This series was compared with similar cohorts from Western Europe (WEU) and North America (NA). Algeria had a significantly higher frequency of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL: 52.8%) and a lower frequency of follicular lymphoma (FL

Revision of classification of laryngeal cancer, is it long overdue? (Proposals for an improved TN-classification).

The TNM-classification of laryngeal carcinomas of the UICC contains a number of weaknesses which diminish their prognostic relevance. Based on clinical observations and microscopic investigations of surgical specimens, several changes are proposed to improve the existing TN-classification. The larynx is subdivided by the UICC into the supraglottic, the glottic and the subglottic main area and their tumours. There are embryological, anatomical, functional and oncological reasons to divide the larynx into two main areas only--the supraglottis and the glottis (vocal folds) without any further sub

Joint transformer architecture in brain 3D MRI classification: its application in Alzheimer's disease classification.

Alzheimer's disease (AD), a neurodegenerative disease that mostly affects the elderly, slowly impairs memory, cognition, and daily tasks. AD has long been one of the most debilitating chronic neurological disorders, affecting mostly people over 65. In this study, we investigated the use of Vision Transformer (ViT) for Magnetic Resonance Image processing in the context of AD diagnosis. ViT was utilized to extract features from MRIs, map them to a feature sequence, perform sequence modeling to maintain interdependencies, and classify features using a time series transformer. The proposed model w

The International Hip Dysplasia Institute (IHDI) classification is more informative than the Tönnis classification.

BACKGROUND: A new, supposedly more reproducible radiographic classification, set to replace the Tönnis classification of hip dislocations, was proposed in 2015: the International Hip Dysplasia Institute (IHDI) classification. PURPOSE: To compare the IHDI classification with the Tönnis classification when evaluating the severity of hip dislocations as well as their respective inter- and intra-observer reliability. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Since January 2000, Swedish-born children with a hip dislocation were prospectively registered. From this registry, radiographs of 97 hips in 79 patients (91%

Proposal of an ultrasonographic classification for hepatic alveolar echinococcosis: Echinococcosis multilocularis Ulm classification-ultrasound.

AIM: To establish an ultrasonographic classification based on a large sample of patients with confirmed hepatic alveolar echinococcosis (AE). METHODS: Clinical data and ultrasonography (US) findings of 185 patients (100 males; 85 females; mean age at diagnosis: 51.4 ± 17.6 years; mean age at time of US examination: 58.7 ± 18.2 years) were retrospectively reviewed with respect to the US morphology of hepatic AE lesions. The sonomorphological findings were grouped according to a five-part classification scheme. RESULTS: Application of the new classification resulted in the following distributi

Reexamination of interictal psychoses based on DSM IV psychosis classification and international epilepsy classification.

We sought to examine interictal psychoses based on the international epilepsy classification and DSM IV criteria, with special attention paid to epilepsy types as well as to subcategories of psychoses. One hundred thirty-two outpatients were studied, each with definite evidence of both epilepsy and interictal psychosis clearly demarcated from postictal psychosis. We compared them with 2,773 other epilepsy outpatients as a control. Risk factors for psychosis were examined within the temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) group and the more extended group of symptomatic localization-related epilepsy. Furt

Clustering of trajectories with mixed effects classification model: Inference taking into account classification uncertainties.

Classifying patient biomarker trajectories into groups has become frequent in clinical research. Mixed effects classification models can be used to model the heterogeneity of longitudinal data. The estimated parameters of typical trajectories and the partition can be provided by the classification version of the expectation maximization algorithm, named CEM. However, the variance of the parameter estimates obtained underestimates the true variance because classification uncertainties are not taken into account. This article takes into account these uncertainties by using the stochastic EM algo
