A systematic review and meta-analysis of trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy for children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Among minors, posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) are a common consequence of traumatic events requiring trauma-focused treatment. OBJECTIVE: This meta-analysis quantified treatment effects of trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT) with PTSS as primary outcome and symptoms of depression, anxiety, and grief as secondary outcomes. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Inclusion criteria for individual settings: (1) patients aged between 3 and 21, (2) at least one traumatic event, (3) minimum 8 sessions of (4) TF-CBT according to Cohen, Mannarino and Deblinger (2006, 2017), (5) a

Prognostic factors and effect modifiers for personalisation of internet-based cognitive behavioural therapy among university students with subthreshold depression: A secondary analysis of a factorial trial.

BACKGROUND: Internet-cognitive behavioural therapy (iCBT) for depression can include multiple components. This study explored depressive symptom improvement prognostic factors (PFs) and effect modifiers (EMs) for five common iCBT components including behavioural activation, cognitive restructuring, problem solving, self-monitoring, and assertion training. METHODS: We used data from a factorial trial of iCBT for subthreshold depression among Japanese university students (N = 1093). The primary outcome was the change in PHQ-9 scores at 8 weeks from baseline. Interactions between each component

Online single-session interventions for Kenyan adolescents: study protocol for a comparative effectiveness randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Mental health problems are the leading cause of disability among adolescents worldwide, yet access to treatment is limited. Brief digital interventions have been shown to improve youth mental health, but little is known about which digital interventions are most effective. AIMS: To evaluate the effectiveness of two digital single-session interventions (Shamiri-Digital and Digital-CBT (cognitive-behavioural therapy)) among Kenyan adolescents. METHODS: We will perform a school-based comparative effectiveness randomised controlled trial. Approximately 926 Kenyan adolescents will be

Coping skill development across adolescence and subsequent links with psychopathology in early adulthood.

Coping effectively with affective distress is a critical developmental task expected to support affective health over the lifespan, with parents likely shaping coping skill development. Yet, naturalistic variation in coping skill development is poorly understood and it remains unclear whether: (1) gender-specific and parental support enrich coping skill development and (2) differences in naturalistic coping skill trajectories differentiate psychopathology outcomes thereafter. Using longitudinal data from a large, nationally-representative U.S. adolescent study (n = 831), the current study appl

The Heavy Toll of Lifeline: An Analysis of the Multidimensional Experience and Interaction Mechanisms of Establishing Arteriovenous Fistula in Patients Receiving Haemodialysis.

BACKGROUND: The arteriovenous fistula, while serving as a vital 'lifeline' for haemodialysis, poses significant clinical challenges; it can extend beyond local dysfunction to adversely affect patients' physiological, psychological and social well-being. OBJECTIVE: This study explored the multidimensional experiences of patients receiving haemodialysis regarding the creation and maintenance of an arteriovenous fistula, based on the biopsychosocial model. DESIGN: This study employed the biopsychosocial model as a theoretical framework and an interpretive phenomenological qualitative analysis m

Age regression in clinical hypnosis: an integrative critical review of therapeutic mechanisms.

Age regression represents a foundational technique in clinical hypnosis, yet its therapeutic mechanisms, clinical applications, and evidence base remain incompletely understood and subject to ongoing controversy. This integrative critical review synthesizes primary research on hypnotic age regression to evaluate therapeutic mechanisms, clinical applications, methodological quality, and implications for evidence-based practice. We conducted a narrative synthesis of 241 primary research studies published between 2015-2025, focusing on randomized controlled trials, clinical trials, experimental s

Machismo and anabolic steroid misuse among young Latino sexual minority men.

Latino sexual minority men (SMM) have elevated anabolic-androgenic steroid (AAS) misuse in comparison to their heterosexual and non-Latino peers. Within a gender role framework, desire to present as masculine through heightened muscularity may be related to increased AAS misuse. To assess the association between AAS misuse and a culturally-distinct masculinity, this study examined the relationship of two aspects of machismo, traditional machismo and caballerismo, with AAS misuse in the past month. Participants were 141 young adult Latino SMM recruited from the San Diego area. Participants comp

Cognitive-behavioural outreach for an adolescent experiencing social anxiety, panic and agoraphobia: A single-case experimental design.

PROBLEM: Previous research suggests that the adult-focussed Clark and Wells (1995) model of social anxiety disorder (SAD) can be used to guide clinic-based treatment for adolescents. This single-case study (N = 1) investigated whether this model could also guide community-based outreach work for a 16-year-old female who was unable to attend clinic-based appointments due to social anxiety comorbid with panic and agoraphobia. METHODS: An experimental A-B-A design was used with three assessment-formulation sessions and 12 intervention sessions, focussing on exposure, cognitive restructuring, att

Individual differences among undergraduate women in methods of coping with stressful events: the impact of cumulative childhood stressors and abuse.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the current study was to determine if a history of greater exposure to different types of adverse and/or abusive experiences in childhood would influence coping strategies used by undergraduate women to deal with new stressful events in young adulthood. METHOD: A sample of 828 women undergraduates from a New England state university participated in this questionnaire study. Disengagement and engagement coping strategies used in response to recent stressors were compared in groups who had none, one, two, or three or more types of adverse and/or abusive childhood exper

The Morphological Underpinnings of Stage-Wise Cognitive Development: Recognizing Piagetian Transitions in Structural Brain Maturation.

INTRODUCTION: Jean Piaget's theory of cognitive development posits that human intelligence progresses through four distinct, sequential stages. While modern neurobiology recognizes a general posterior-to-anterior gradient in brain maturation consistent with Piaget's proposal, the specific correspondence between structural cortical reorganization and these discrete psychological transitions remains a subject of investigation. Here we examine the temporal correspondence between cortical shape change and Piaget's cognitive stages by analyzing ontogenetic trajectories and introducing a novel appro

Three-day intensive group cognitive behavioral therapy for social anxiety in Chinese college students: A randomized controlled trial with an exploratory analysis of underlying mechanisms.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety is highly prevalent among Chinese youth. While traditional group cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has demonstrated efficacy, its extended duration and high attrition rates may limit accessibility. In this randomized controlled trial, we developed and evaluated the short- and long-term efficacy of a three-day intensive group CBT protocol and explored a potential serial mediation pathway involving maladaptive social beliefs and fear of negative evaluation. METHODS: Seventy-one participants with elevated social anxiety (Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale - Self Report [L

The role of eco-anxiety in the presentation of bulimia nervosa: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Despite a growing literature demonstrating the significant impacts of climate change on mental health, research is urgently needed to investigate how climate change-related concerns may contribute to the development, exacerbation, or re-emergence of eating disorders, as well as affect the effectiveness of existing interventions. This case report contributes to this scant knowledge base by offering empirical evidence for how responses to climate change can influence eating disorder symptoms and, importantly, limit the effectiveness of evidence-based treatments such as Cognitive Beha

Examining cognitive-behavioral therapy change mechanisms for decreasing depression, weight, and insulin resistance in adolescent girls at risk for type 2 diabetes.

OBJECTIVE: Depression in adolescence is linked to risk for type 2 diabetes (T2D). In this secondary data analysis of a randomized controlled trial comparing cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) to a control program to ameliorate insulin resistance via reducing depression symptoms, we examine which CBT change mechanisms (e.g., behavioral activation, cognitive restructuring) contributed to decreased depression and subsequent improvements in body mass index (BMI), percent body fat, and insulin resistance. METHODS: Girls 12-17y with overweight/obesity and family history of T2D were randomized to si

Patient education based on principles of cognitive behavioral therapy for a patient with persistent low back pain: a case report.

STUDY DESIGN: Case report. BACKGROUND: Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is an effective intervention for patients with persistent pain. Recent research indicates that physical therapists self-perceive a lack of knowledge, skills, and time to provide this intervention. The purpose of this case report is to describe how specific CBT strategies can be integrated with multimodal physical therapist management of a patient with persistent low back pain. CASE DESCRIPTION: The patient was a 70-year-old female with activity limitations of walking, standing, and forward bending. Oswestry Disability
