Combined addition of biochar and garbage enzyme improving the humification and succession of fungal community during sewage sludge composting.

The influences of combination of garbage enzyme and biochar on total organic carbon (TOC) degradation, humification and the fungal succession during sewage sludge (SS) composting were established. Results showed that the GE and BC + GE treatments significantly increased the enzyme activity of fluorescein diacetate hydrolase (FDA) and increased the TOC degradation rate by 9.8% and 21.9% relative to control. The excitation-emission matrix (EEM) combined with the percentage fluorescence response (Pi, n) also proved that the combination of BC and GE promoted fulvic acid-like and humic-like substan

Effects of chlortetracycline on the fate of multi-antibiotic resistance genes and the microbial community during swine manure composting.

Excessive use of antibiotics in breeding industry leads to accumulation of antibiotic residuals and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in environment from improperly treated livestock excrements. Four commonly used veterinary antibiotics including chlortetracycline (CTC), sulfamerazine (SMZ), enrofloxacin (ENR) and erythromycin (ERY) were monitored in the swine manure composting. Co-resistance and cross-resistance effects among relative ARGs, correlations between ARGs and bacterial community under multiple antibiotics residual during the composting were investigated in this research. With CTC

Heat and desiccation are the predominant factors affecting inactivation of Bacillus licheniformis and Bacillus thuringiensis spores during simulated composting.

AIMS: The suitability of composting for disposal of livestock mortalities due to Bacillus anthracis was assessed by measuring viability of surrogate spores from two strains each of Bacillus licheniformis and Bacillus thuringiensis after a heating cycle modelled on a cattle composting study. METHODS AND RESULTS: Sporulation was attempted from 10 to 37°C, but poor yields at lower temperatures resulted in 25, 30 and 37°C being selected to generate sufficient spores (8 log10  CFU ml(-1) ) for experiments. Spores were inoculated into 3 g autoclaved dried-ground compost rehydrated with 6 ml water o

Cd, Cr, and Pb concentrations increase during composting: implications of uncertain mass balance and analytical recovery for compliance sampling.

Metal concentrations during composting reflect changes in dry mass, metal inputs or losses, and the fraction recovered by digestion. Concentrations of Zn, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Cr, Cd, and Pb were measured over 90 days in five poultry litter (PL): vegetable waste blends and analyzed under three assumptions about dry matter loss. Cd in pure-PL compost increased from 0.84 to 3.34 mg kg-1 dry matter. After correction for the loss inferred from Zn and Mn, mean apparent recovery factors were 1.03 for Zn, Cu, Mn, and Ni and 5.11 for Cr, Cd, and Pb (95% bootstrap interval 3.05-8.23). The latter group remai

Integrated metagenomic and 16S rRNA analysis reveals temporal associations between resistance genes and microbial communities during dairy manure composting.

Dairy manure composting is widely applied to stabilize organic waste and reduce environmental pollution, yet the behavior of resistance determinants during this process remains insufficiently resolved. In this study, shotgun metagenomic sequencing was used to characterize temporal changes in antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), metal resistance genes (MRGs), biocide resistance genes (BRGs), mobile genetic elements (MGEs), and microbial community composition during dairy manure composting. Rather than inferring direct mechanistic causation, our analyses focused on identifying statistically suppo

Comparative effects of siderite, goethite, and hematite on nitrogen loss and nitrogenous gases release during municipal sludge aerobic composting.

Despite iron ores exhibiting the potential to regulate microbial nitrogen transformation, their roles in municipal sludge aerobic composting remain unclear. This study evaluated the effects of siderite, goethite, and hematite on nitrogen loss and nitrogenous gases emissions during sludge aerobic composting. Results showed that all three iron ores increased ROS and Fe(II) concentrations, with goethite and hematite increasing nitrogen retention by 13.13% and 18.18%. Goethite and hematite regulated pH and Fe(II) dynamics and increased the abundance of hao and nxrA genes, thereby enhancing nitrifi

Greenhouse gas emissions in a microbial fuel cell-assisted composting system: Microbial insights into bacterial structures and genetic functions.

Greenhouse gas emissions, including methane (CH4), carbon dioxide (CO2), and nitrous oxide (N2O), have significant environmental impacts during the composting process. Herein, a microbial fuel cell (MFC)-assisted composting system was employed to investigate the emission profiles of these gases. CH4 and CO2 emissions were peaked during the temperature-heating phase, while N2O emission showed maximum levels during the temperature-heating and maturation phases. Compared to the control (without MFC), MFC increased the abundance of Proteobacteria, Bacteroidota, and Gemmatimonadota in the compostin

Elucidating carbon conversion and bacterial succession by amending Fenon-like systems during co-composting of pig manure and branch.

The essential point of current study was to investigate the effect of a Fenton-like system established by oxalic acid and Fe(II) on gas emission, organic matter decomposition and humification during composting. Branches were pretreated with Fenton reagents (0.02 M FeCl2·4H2O + 1.5 M H2O2) and then adding 10 % oxalic acid (OA). The treatments were marked as B1 (control), B2 (Fenton reagent), B3 (10% OA) and B4 (Fenton-like reagent). The results collected from 80 d of composting showed that adding Fenton-like reagent benefited the degradation of organic substances, as reflected by the total orga

Biochar improves the humification process during pig manure composting: Insights into roles of the bacterial community and metabolic functions.

Biochar could promote humification in composting, nevertheless, its mechanism has not been fully explored from the perspective of the overall bacterial community and its metabolism. This study investigated the effects of bamboo charcoal (BC) and wheat straw biochar (WSB) on the humic acid (HA) and fulvic acid (FA) contents during pig manure composting. The results showed that BC enhanced humification more than WSB, and significantly increased the HA content and HA/FA ratio. The bacterial community structure under BC differed from those under the other treatments, and BC increased the abundance

Combined effects of amoxicillin and copper on nitrogen transformation and the microbial mechanisms during aerobic composting of cow manure.

Pollutants in livestock manure have a compound effect during aerobic composting, but research to date has focused more on single factors. This study investigated the effects of adding amoxicillin (AMX), copper (Cu) and both (ACu) on nitrogen transformation and the microbial mechanisms in cow manure aerobic composting with wheat straw. In this study, compared with CK, AMX, Cu, and ACu increased NH3 cumulative emissions by 32.32%, 41.78% and 8.32%, respectively, due to their inhibition of ammonia oxidation. Coexisting AMX and Cu decreased the absolute abundances of amoA/ nxrA genes and increased

Sensitive response mechanism of ARGs and MGEs to initial designed temperature during swine manure and food waste co-composting.

The rapid aerobic composting process has been used to reduce organic wastes, but the associated risks of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) need to evaluate in an efficient way. The primary objective of this work was to explore the underlying mechanism of initial adjustment in composting temperature on the variation of ARGs, mobile genetic elements (MGEs), and microbial composition during co-composting. The co-composting was initially externally heated (T2) for 5 days. The results showed that ARGs abundance in conventional composting (T1) was reduced by 49.36%, while multidrug was enriched by
