How many people does it take to operate a picture archiving and communication system?

The most frequently asked question without a correct answer is: "Just how many people does it take to operate a picture archiving and communication system (PACS)?" At Texas Children's Hospital, our consensus is that we do not yet know. As soon as we felt we had adequate staffing to provide timely response for routine services, we found that including the Intensive Care Units (ICUs) increased our demand for urgent response beyond our capacity. The addition of inpatient bedside imaging to PACS also increased the demand for round-the-clock and weekend PACS services. Our answer to the staffing que

HREI-MSDB: Data Science-Ready Database of High-Resolution Electron Ionization Mass Spectra.

Despite the increasing use of gas chromatography coupled with electron ionization high-resolution mass spectrometry (GC-EI-HRMS), only a limited amount of GC-EI-HRMS reference data is currently available. Such data are beneficial not only for use with a GC-EI-HRMS instrument but also for computational purposes─for example, for training machine learning models that predict fragmentation under electron ionization conditions. Such models are currently trained and tested on integer m/z data, although they predict the exact elemental composition of ions. High-quality GC-EI-HRMS data will be able to

Beyond fingerprint and voice print: cough sequence sound for identity verification.

Traditional speaker verification systems rely on speech-based features such as fundamental frequency, resonance, and spectral characteristics. In clinical and remote monitoring settings where patients may be unable or unwilling to speak, non-speech sounds like coughs could provide a passive biometric signal for identity verification. While prior research has shown that individual coughs carry identity-specific features, most studies rely on single, voluntary coughs collected in controlled settings, limiting generalizability. Here, we investigated whether cough sequences contain sufficient info

A Systematic Study on Electromyography-Based Hand Gesture Recognition for Assistive Robots Using Deep Learning and Machine Learning Models.

Upper limb amputation severely affects the quality of life and the activities of daily living of a person. In the last decade, many robotic hand prostheses have been developed which are controlled by using various sensing technologies such as artificial vision and tactile and surface electromyography (sEMG). If controlled properly, these prostheses can significantly improve the daily life of hand amputees by providing them with more autonomy in physical activities. However, despite the advancements in sensing technologies, as well as excellent mechanical capabilities of the prosthetic devices,

Computer-based Auditory Training by New Adult Cochlear Implant Recipients Is Associated With Durable Improvements in Cochlear Implant Quality of Life.

OBJECTIVE: The process of adapting to communicate with a cochlear implant (CI) is complex. The use of auditory training after cochlear implantation may help to facilitate improvements in postoperative speech recognition and quality-of-life outcomes in new adult CI recipients. However, the effectiveness of auditory training remains uncertain and long-term effects have not been examined in a large sample of new adult CI users. As such, the objective of this study was to examine the influence of common forms of auditory training on speech recognition and CI-related quality-of-life (CI-related QOL

MMPred: a tool to predict peptide mimicry events in MHC class II recognition.

We present MMPred, a software tool that integrates epitope prediction and sequence alignment algorithms to streamline the computational analysis of molecular mimicry events in autoimmune diseases. Starting with two protein or peptide sets (e.g., from human and SARS-CoV-2), MMPred facilitates the generation, investigation, and testing of mimicry hypotheses by providing epitope predictions specifically for MHC class II alleles, which are frequently implicated in autoimmunity. However, the tool is easily extendable to MHC class I predictions by incorporating pre-trained models from CNN-PepPred an

Real-time EEG-based brain-computer interface to a virtual avatar enhances cortical involvement in human treadmill walking.

Recent advances in non-invasive brain-computer interface (BCI) technologies have shown the feasibility of neural decoding for both users' gait intent and continuous kinematics. However, the dynamics of cortical involvement in human upright walking with a closed-loop BCI has not been investigated. This study aims to investigate the changes of cortical involvement in human treadmill walking with and without BCI control of a walking avatar. Source localization revealed significant differences in cortical network activity between walking with and without closed-loop BCI control. Our results showed

Attentional state-synchronous peripheral electrical stimulation during action observation induced distinct modulation of corticospinal plasticity after stroke.

INTRODUCTION: Brain computer interface-based action observation (BCI-AO) is a promising technique in detecting the user's cortical state of visual attention and providing feedback to assist rehabilitation. Peripheral nerve electrical stimulation (PES) is a conventional method used to enhance outcomes in upper extremity function by increasing activation in the motor cortex. In this study, we examined the effects of different pairings of peripheral nerve electrical stimulation (PES) during BCI-AO tasks and their impact on corticospinal plasticity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Our innovative BCI-AO in

Automatic Feature Selection for Sensorimotor Rhythms Brain-Computer Interface Fusing Expert and Data-Driven Knowledge.

Early brain-computer interface (BCI) systems were mainly based on prior neurophysiological knowledge coupled with feedback training, while state-of-the-art interfaces rely on data-driven, machine learning (ML)-oriented methods. Despite the advances in BCI that ML can be credited with, the performance of BCI solutions is still not up to the mark, posing a major barrier to the widespread use of this technology. This paper proposes a novel, automatic feature selection method for BCI able to leverage both data-dependent and expert knowledge to suppress noisy features and highlight the most relevan

Sensewheel: an adjunct to wheelchair skills training.

The purpose of this Letter was to investigate the influence of real-time verbal feedback to optimise push arc during over ground manual wheelchair propulsion. Ten healthy non-wheelchair users pushed a manual wheelchair for a distance of 25 m on level paving, initially with no feedback and then with real-time verbal feedback aimed at controlling push arc within a range of 85°-100°. The real-time feedback was provided by a physiotherapist walking behind the wheelchair, viewing real-time data on a tablet personal computer received from the Sensewheel, a lightweight instrumented wheelchair wheel.

Federated deep reinforcement learning enabled hierarchical Edge-Fog-Cloud architecture for intelligent task offloading in 6G networks.

Latency sensitive, computation intensive and mobility aware applications in Edge Fog Cloud environments have increased the demand to develop intelligent offloading task mechanism that can dynamically scale to changing network conditions whilst remaining scalable, energy efficient, and preserving data privacy. Traditional, heuristic and centralized based learning offloading methods frequently have problems in accommodating heterogeneous workloads, non- stationary environments and privacy limitations associated with the next generation distributed computer system. In order to overcome these draw

Computer-aided self-exposure therapy for phobia/panic disorder: a pilot economic evaluation.

Phobia/panic disorder is common. It improves with exposure therapy, even when guided mainly by a computer self-help system such as FearFighter (FF), but such therapy must also demonstrate cost-effectiveness. This study compares the cost-effectiveness of FF with computed-aided relaxation and clinician-led exposure. Data were obtained on patients from a randomised controlled trial of FF. Economic analyses used pretreatment and 1-month follow-up self-ratings of the main problem and global phobia. Clinician costs were calculated using the number of therapist hours and the cost of FF. Incremental c

[Nursing personnel attitudes prior to the introduction of informatic tools and contemporary vision of a hospital information system].

Computerization is no more improvised just like that and the management of computer plans is from now on a matter for methods and approaches which leave nothing to chance. The main purpose of the present work's empirical part is to a priori determine the attitude which will be the one of the nurses toward the implementation of computer aid in the care units that is expected on the short term. So we will have at our disposal pertinent information which will enable the concerned people to efficiently negotiate this change. For the realization of the present study, we built a LIKERT scale of atti

A(C)VPpred: Transfer Learning-Enhanced Prediction of Antiviral and Anticoronavirus Peptides from Sequence Data.

Viral infections pose an ongoing public health challenge and create a need for innovative therapies. Antiviral peptides (AVPs) offer a promising solution due to their high specificity, low toxicity, and reduced risk of inducing drug resistance. The COVID-19 pandemic has heightened the need for targeted anticoronavirus peptides (ACVPs). We introduce the term A(C)VPs (where "(C)" indicates the optional coronavirus specificity) to encompass both broad-spectrum AVPs and ACVPs. However, experimental screening of effective A(C)VPs remains slow and costly. To overcome these limitations, we propose A(

A cost-effective IoT learning environment for the training and assessment of surgical technical skills with visual learning analytics.

BACKGROUND: Surgeons need to train and certify their technical skills. This is usually done with the intervention of experts who monitor and assess trainees. Nevertheless, this is a time-consuming task that is subject to variations among evaluators. In recent decades, subjectivity has been significantly reduced through 1) the introduction of standard curricula, such as the Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery (FLS) program, which measures students' performance in specific exercises, and 2) rubrics, which are widely accepted in the literature and serve to provide feedback about the overall tech

Creating a low-cost virtual reality surgical simulation to increase surgical oncology capacity and capability.

Worldwide, more than 80% of people with cancer will require surgery during their disease course, but less than 25% have access to safe, affordable and timely surgery. Among the barriers to increasing surgical capacity are the time and costs required to train novices. Virtual reality (VR) surgical simulations can reduce the time required for novices to reach surgical proficiency, though their costs may exceed USD $100,000. The goal of this study was to determine if a low-cost system, using commercially available technology designed for in-home computer gaming, could be used to create a realisti
