Methodology for patient-specific modeling of atrial fibrosis as a substrate for atrial fibrillation.

Personalized computational cardiac models are emerging as an important tool for studying cardiac arrhythmia mechanisms, and have the potential to become powerful instruments for guiding clinical anti-arrhythmia therapy. In this article, we present the methodology for constructing a patient-specific model of atrial fibrosis as a substrate for atrial fibrillation. The model is constructed from high-resolution late gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (LGE-MRI) images acquired in vivo from a patient suffering from persistent atrial fibrillation, accurately capturing both the patient's a

Analysis of a multilevel diagnosis decision support system and its implications: a case study.

Medical diagnosis can be performed in an automatic way with the use of computer-based systems or algorithms. Such systems are usually called diagnostic decision support systems (DDSSs) or medical diagnosis systems (MDSs). An evaluation of the performance of a DDSS called ML-DDSS has been performed in this paper. The methodology is based on clinical case resolution performed by physicians which is then used to evaluate the behavior of ML-DDSS. This methodology allows the calculation of values for several well-known metrics such as precision, recall, accuracy, specificity, and Matthews correlati

Using empirical likelihood to combine data: application to food risk assessment.

This article introduces an original methodology based on empirical likelihood, which aims at combining different food contamination and consumption surveys to provide risk managers with a risk measure, taking into account all the available information. This risk index is defined as the probability that exposure to a contaminant exceeds a safe dose. It is naturally expressed as a nonlinear functional of the different consumption and contamination distributions, more precisely as a generalized U-statistic. This nonlinearity and the huge size of the data sets make direct computation of the proble

Obtaining optic disc center and pixel region by automatic thresholding methods on morphologically processed fundus images.

Development of automatic retinal disease diagnosis systems based on retinal image computer analysis can provide remarkably quicker screening programs for early detection. Such systems are mainly focused on the detection of the earliest ophthalmic signs of illness and require previous identification of fundal landmark features such as optic disc (OD), fovea or blood vessels. A methodology for accurate center-position location and OD retinal region segmentation on digital fundus images is presented in this paper. The methodology performs a set of iterative opening-closing morphological operation

A new method to reduce radiation exposure during multi-row detector cardiac computed tomographic angiography.

Unnecessary exposure to radiation is a major concern in cardiac computed tomographic angiography (CTA) and there have been several methods proposed to reduce radiation exposure in this imaging modality. One method that has not received much attention is the methodology of more precisely defining the upper and lower limits of the scan volume, as starting too high and/or going too low will proportionally add to the dose. We present our experience of performing CTA studies in our institution by better defining these scanning points.

Computational Phenotypic Drug Discovery for Anticancer Chemotherapy: PTML Modeling of Multi-Cell Inhibitors of Colorectal Cancer Cell Lines.

Colorectal cancer is one of the most dangerous neoplastic diseases in terms of both mortality and incidence. Thus, anti-colorectal cancer agents are urgently needed. Computational approaches have great potential to accelerate the phenotypic discovery of versatile anticancer agents. Here, by combining perturbation-theory machine learning (PTML) modeling with the fragment-based topological design (FBTD) approach, we provide key computational evidence on the computer-aided de novo design and prediction of new molecules virtually exhibiting multi-cell inhibitory activity against different colorect

Reconfigurable Analog Computing Metasurfaces Based on Thin Film Lithium Niobate.

Analog computing metasurface offers significant advantages, including ultrafast computation, low power consumption, and parallel processing of data, thereby presenting a promising pathway toward the realization of a compact and integrated ultrafast all-optical information processing system. However, existing designs can only toggle between computing and noncomputing modes, falling short of achieving truly reconfigurable analog computing function. In this work, a reconfigurable transmission-type analog computing metasurface based on the electro-optic material thin film lithium niobate is demons

Methodology for Static Pressure Measurement Under Confined Spatial Conditions in the Low-Pressure Range.

This paper presents a methodology enabling the use of a Pitot probe for static pressure measurement in supersonic flow under severely confined spatial conditions where standard design guidelines cannot be satisfied. In particular, the recommended placement of a static pressure tapping at a distance of 10-20 tube diameters is not feasible; the proposed approach allows for the tapping to be located immediately downstream of the static tube cone. The methodology combines theoretical analysis, experimental measurements, and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations. Experiments were performed

Discovery of Dynamic Models for AML Disease Progression from Longitudinal Multi-Modal Clinical Data Using Explainable Machine Learning.

Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) is a complex and heterogeneous disease identified by severe clinical progression, fast cellular proliferation, and often high mortality rates. Incorporating diverse longitudinal information on patients' medical histories is essential for developing effective disease predictive models applicable to both research and clinical settings. Here, we present a robust methodology for discovering dynamic predictive models to elucidate AML disease progression dynamics from a novel longitudinal multimodal clinical dataset of patients diagnosed with AML. The clinical dataset wa

The STOIC2021 COVID-19 AI challenge: Applying reusable training methodologies to private data.

Challenges drive the state-of-the-art of automated medical image analysis. The quantity of public training data that they provide can limit the performance of their solutions. Public access to the training methodology for these solutions remains absent. This study implements the Type Three (T3) challenge format, which allows for training solutions on private data and guarantees reusable training methodologies. With T3, challenge organizers train a codebase provided by the participants on sequestered training data. T3 was implemented in the STOIC2021 challenge, with the goal of predicting from

Molecular dynamics study of the mechanical properties of drug loaded model systems: A comparison of a polymersome with a bilayer.

In this work we implement a new methodology to study structural and mechanical properties of systems having spherical and planar symmetries throughout Molecular Dynamics simulations. This methodology is applied here to a drug delivery system based in polymersomes, as an example. The chosen model drug was the local anesthetic prilocaine due to previous parameterization within the used coarse grain scheme. In our approach, mass density profiles (MDPs) are used to obtain key structural parameters of the systems, and pressure profiles are used to estimate the curvature elastic parameters. The calc

Differences in pathological gambling prevalence estimates: facts or artefacts?

The paper aims at investigating whether survey methodology has recently converged to justify the common practice of comparing prevalence estimates and interpreting differences within and between countries. To this end, prevalence studies of problem (PrG) and pathological gambling (PG) published in peer-reviewed journals between 2000 and 2010 were critically reviewed. A systematic computer-based literature search was conducted within various databases and major gambling journals. In a two-step search process, a total of 39 studies reporting current prevalence data of non-clinical national sampl

Viewpoint on Multisensory Body Perception and Body Illusions.

In this interview-based viewpoint article, Tobias Heed and Matthew Longo discuss research investigating the role of multisensory signals in shaping perception of one's own body. Drawing on both classic and recent studies, they suggest that a central insight is that body perception and the sense of self are constructed based on the integration of real-time signals from several sensory modalities. Classic findings such as the rubber hand and Pinocchio illusions have demonstrated the flexibility of body representations, while Bayesian frameworks have provided principled accounts of how signals fr

Comparative Analysis of Algorithms for Extracting Frames from Unexplored Regions in Molecular Dynamics Simulations.

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are invaluable tools for studying molecular behavior, offering insights into the time-dependent evolution of molecular systems. However, these simulations often face significant limitations in exploring the full conformational space of the complex systems. The high dimensionality and the presence of energy barriers in the conformational landscape hinder the effective exploration of rare states, leaving large portions of the conformational space unexplored. To overcome these limitations and enhance the exploration of the conformational landscape, in this stud

Mapping of Subjective Accounts into Interpreted Clusters (MOSAIC): Topic Modelling and LLM applied to Stroboscopic Phenomenology.

Stroboscopic light stimulation (SLS) on closed eyes typically induces simple visual hallucinations, characterized by vivid, geometric, and colourful patterns. A dataset of 898 sentences, extracted from 407 open subjective reports, was recently compiled as part of the Dreamachine programme (https://dreamachine.world/) (Collective Act, 2022), an immersive multisensory experience that combines SLS and spatial sound in a collective setting. Although open reports extend the range of reportable phenomenology, their analysis presents significant challenges, particularly in systematically identifying

Second Harmonic Generation of Spiropyran-Merocyanine Photoswitches: Insights From Hyper-Rayleigh Scattering and All-Atom Dynamic Structure Quantum Mechanical Calculations.

This work investigates second harmonic generation and photoswitching of two representative spiropyran/merocyanine (SP/MC) systems in dichloromethane, combining synthesis, hyper-Rayleigh scattering (HRS) measurements, and novel computational methodologies. HRS measurements use near-infrared excitation and are performed under continuous UV irradiation to drive photoswitching. To compute (non)linear optical properties of explicitly solvated systems, an all-atom dynamic structure quantum mechanical (ADQM) protocol is proposed, coupling GFN2-xTB molecular dynamics with the eXact integral simplified
