BACKGROUND: The protective effect of condom use is controversial as a result of limited data.
GOAL: The goal of this study was to assess the association between condom use errors in consistent condom users and the prevalence of various sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).
STUDY: We conducted a cross-sectional study of visits to an urban STD clinic between January 2001 and January 2003, by women, men who have sex with women (MSW), and men who have sex with men (MSM) by consistent condom users with or without a condom use error.
METHODS: Prevalence rates were calculated for gonorrhea, chlamy

BACKGROUND: Nursing student as a future frontline healthcare professionals play a critical role in promoting sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) and influencing contraceptive behaviours within communities. However, there is limited evidence on their knowledge, attitude and utilization of female condoms among these health trainees. We, therefore, examined the knowledge, attitude, and utilization of female condoms among nursing students at the Nursing Training College, Ho.
METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 402 female students selected through simple random sampli

A systematic review was undertaken to determine whether cost is a structural barrier preventing men who have sex with men (MSM) accessing condoms. Studies were examined from a range of countries where condoms have been distributed free to particular populations and also those where condoms were available at a cost to the individual. The study inclusion criteria were: published between January 1990 and September 2014 inclusive; published in any language, discussed cost as a barrier to condom use, discussed cost barriers to MSM accessing condoms and included a measure of outcome. Articles were s

BACKGROUND: Most university students in Nigeria are sexually active and engage in high risk sexual behaviors. The aim of this study was to assess the acceptability and use of female condoms in the context of HIV prevention in order to provide basic information that can stimulate female condom programming to promote sexually transmitted infection and HIV prevention among youths in tertiary institutions.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out among 810 undergraduate students of the University of Port Harcourt from October to November 2011, using a stratified

PURPOSE: To estimate the prevalence of and factors associated with dual method use (i.e., condom with hormonal contraception or an intrauterine device) among adolescents and young women in the United States.
METHODS: We used 2006-2010 National Survey of Family Growth data from 2,093 unmarried females aged 15-24 years and at risk for unintended pregnancy. Using multivariable logistic regression, we estimated adjusted odds ratios (aORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) to assess the associations between dual method use at last sex and sociodemographic, behavioral, reproductive history, and se

With the advent of HIV, sexual health campaigns and formal sex education in schools have worked to instil the concept of safe sex into the collective minds of Australia's youth. However the concept in its present guise is a fairly limited one. We argue in this paper that the predominant emphasis in education programmes on safe sex as condom use may be counter-productive for some young heterosexuals for two reasons. First, this strategy is male-focused and may not extrapolate well to young women who face special risks around pregnancy and rigid societal gender norms which govern sexual behaviou

A sexual health programme was set up specifically to target mentally ill individuals, providing a distinct group of interventions designed to assist this specialist cohort in acquiring knowledge, skills, and attitudes that will directly contribute to their mental health. The programme consisted of gender-specific and mixed groups, a drop-in service, condom provision and a full-time programme coordinator. Areas covered were safer-sex, knowledge of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases, assertiveness and practical skills of condom use. Mental health nurses possessed the skills to offe

Male contraception has been utilized for thousands of years and has included abstinence, withdrawal or coitus interruptus, condom usage, and vasectomy. With a rapidly changing reproductive health landscape, there is continued interest and an acute need for new and innovative forms of male contraception. This manuscript aims to look at the history of male contraception as currently used today and to look at future applications. Peer-reviewed and lay literature was examined to discuss the history and to examine the future directions of the field. Barrier male contraception was first recorded in

Regarding rectal foreign bodies with gastrointestinal perforation, most objects are hard, and perforation by a condom has not been reported. We describe the case of a 48-year-old man who inserted a water-filled condom into his rectum and performed abdominal crunch exercises for the purpose of sexual arousal. After several repetitions, the condom ruptured. Physical examination revealed signs of peritoneal irritation, and computed tomography confirmed the presence of free air and perirectal fluid accumulation. The patient was diagnosed with acute generalized peritonitis, and emergent laparotomy

OBJECTIVE: To assess the use of male condoms and dual protection by Brazilian adolescent men, as well as their associated aspects.
METHODS: A database from the Study of Cardiovascular Risks in Adolescents (ERICA) was used for this national cross-sectiotabelnal school-based research. The sample included adolescents of both sexes, aged between 12 and 17 years old, selected through cluster sampling in 2014 (n = 75,060). This study analyzed information from adolescent men who reported having had sexual intercourse (n = 12,215). The dependent variables were the use of male condoms and the use of d

Condom effectiveness can be reduced by a number of problems and errors that take place during use. The purpose of the present study was to translate and adapt the Condom Use Errors and Problems Survey (CUES) into Spanish and to use it for testing the prevalence of these issues in a sample of young Colombian adults. A total of 775 people (414 women and 361 men) between 18 and 26 years of age participated in the study. Participants completed the following questionnaires online: Condom Use Errors and Problems Survey, Sexual Opinion Survey, Sexual Assertiveness Scale, Multidimensional Condom Attit

BACKGROUND: Drug dealers and drug users resort to body stuffing to hastily conceal illicit drugs by ingesting their drug packets. This practice represents a medical challenge because rupture of the often insecure packaging can be toxic and even lethal. In an emergency setting, official guidelines are needed to help the medical team decide on the proper treatment. A preliminary observation period is generally accepted but its duration varies from hours to eventual packet expulsion.
CASE PRESENTATION: This case involves a 20-year-old white man in detention who claimed to have ingested one cocai

Condoms can help young adults protect themselves from sexually transmitted infections and unintended pregnancy. We examined young people's attitudes about whether condoms reduced pleasure and how these attitudes shape condom practices. We used a nationally representative sample of 2328 heterosexually active, unmarried 15- to 24-year-old young adults to document multivariate associations with condom nonuse at the last sexual episode. For both young men and women, pleasure-related attitudes were more strongly associated with lack of condom use than all sociodemographic or sexual history factors.

Sexual transmission of HIV/AIDS is increasing in Iran and is the main route of infection among women. In order to foster the development of future HIV prevention interventions for women, researchers need to understand the factors that influence sexual risk reduction behaviors in this group. The aim of this study was to explore the predictors of condom use among women at risk of HIV and develop a model of condom use in a sample of women at risk of HIV. We cross-sectionally examined predictors of condom use among 200 women at risk of HIV. Women were recruited from drop-in centers and voluntary c

OBJECTIVE: Condom use is critical for the health of sexually active adolescents, and yet many adolescents fail to use condoms consistently. One interpersonal factor that may be key to condom use is sexual communication between sexual partners; however, the association between communication and condom use has varied considerably in prior studies of youth. The purpose of this meta-analysis was to synthesize the growing body of research linking adolescents' sexual communication to condom use, and to examine several moderators of this association.
METHOD: A total of 41 independent effect sizes fr

We assessed awareness and use of the "NYC Condom" among persons who use heroin and cocaine in New York City. The NYC Condom distribution program is the largest free condom distribution program in the USA, with over 30 million condoms distributed per year. It includes a condom social marketing program for a specific brand, the NYC Condom with its own packaging and advertising. People who use heroin and cocaine are at relatively high risk for HIV infection and are an important target population for the program. In order to assess awareness of the NYC Condom, structured interviews and blood testi

Measurement of condom use is important to assess progress in increasing use. Since 2003, the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) and AIDS Indicator Surveys (AIS) have included new measures of self-reported condom use. We use data from Namibia, Swaziland, Tanzania, and Zambia to compare measures of condom use accounting for type of sexual partner. Condom use at last sex ranged from 20% in Tanzania to 57% in Namibia for men, and from 12% in Tanzania to 41% in Namibia for women. Reported condom use was lower in response to questions about condom use every time with last partner (from 13 to 47% f

HIV prevention efforts promote the use of condoms to prevent the spread of HIV and other STDs. Thus, a woman's agency to practice healthy sexual behaviors necessarily involves negotiation with another person. This poses unique challenges for women who have limited power in relationships. The current study explores how the experience of intimate partner violence (IPV) impacts a woman's confidence in her ability to negotiate condom use with a sexual partner (i.e., condom use self-efficacy), using data from incarcerated females in three states, who were interviewed just prior to release back into
