Home-based exoskeleton use to improve quality of life in patients with multiple sclerosis: study protocol of a multicentre, randomised, cross-over trial.

BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS) frequently leads to mobility impairment, fatigue and a significant decline in health-related quality of life (QoL). Home-based assistive technology, such as robotic exoskeletons, offers a promising solution to enhance independent mobility and increase the intensity of motor training. Long-term functional and quality of life benefits of light lower-limb exoskeleton home use have yet to be determined. OBJECTIVE: The primary objective of this study is to determine the efficacy of an 8-week period, home-based use of a robotic exoskeleton in improving QoL in ind

Efficient enamel subsurface lesion remineralisation and dentine tubule occlusion by high concentration CPP-ACP: a randomised, cross-over in situ study.

This study assessed the efficacy of 60% CPP-ACP to remineralise white spot lesions (WSLs) in enamel and to occlude patent dentinal tubules in a double-blind, randomized, cross-over, in situ study. Human enamel specimens with subsurface lesions (WSLs) and root dentine specimens with open dentinal tubules were prepared and inserted into intra-oral appliances worn by volunteers. Participants wore the appliances 24 h a day for four 14-consecutive day treatment periods with a 7-day washout period between treatments. Four treatments applied with a micro-brush once daily were 60% CPP-ACP with and wit

Cervical and thoracolumbar transspinal stimulation at 0.3 Hz and 30 Hz facilitates neuronal excitability in healthy humans: a randomized cross-over study.

Effective neuromodulation protocols for upper motor neuron lesions are in great need. Based on the significant role of intraspinal neuronal pathways in motor control, we investigated here the effects of multisite cervical and thoracolumbar transspinal stimulation on arm and leg corticospinal and spinal reflex excitability. This was a randomized cross-over study in which 10 healthy subjects received either 0.3–30 Hz multisite transspinal stimulation on different days. Stimulation at either frequency was delivered at alternating subthreshold and suprathreshold intensities in blocks of 10 min for

Community use of systemic antibiotics among individuals aged 15 and over in Brazil: A seven-year population-based cross-sectional study.

Brazil is recognized as the largest consumer of antibiotics among Latin American countries, despite the implementation of restrictive measures since 2011. Systemic antibiotics (J01) are commonly prescribed for community use and empirically for treating viral diseases, which can result in therapeutic failure and potential sources of microbial resistance. Studying the use of J01 at the outpatient and community level provides an opportunity to understand different clinical and social perspectives on the use of these drugs. The study aimed to describe the consumption of J01 in young people and adu

β-glycyrrhetinic acid-containing dentifrice alleviates dental plaque accumulation and gingival inflammation: a randomized, cross-over, placebo-controlled study.

BACKGROUND: Plaque control is essential for the prevention of dental caries and periodontal diseases. β-glycyrrhetinic acid (BGA) is an anti-inflammatory compound that has also been shown to be antibacterial. This study aimed to determine the effect of a dentifrice containing BGA on supragingival dental plaque accumulation. METHODS: Twenty-five patients who visited the Nagasaki University Hospital for periodontal maintenance from October 2020 to April 2022 were included in this study. It was a cross-over double-blind study, with BGA-containing and placebo toothpaste used for 1 week each. The u

Effects of a sedentary behaviour intervention in emergency dispatch centre phone operators: a study protocol for the SECODIS randomised controlled cross-over trial.

INTRODUCTION: Sedentary behaviour is a public health problem. We mainly have sedentary behaviour at work, transforming them into occupational risk. To our knowledge, there is no intervention study on the reduction of occupational sedentary behaviour in a real work situation and its impact on health and biomarkers of stress. The main objective is to study changes in sedentary behaviour following a behavioural intervention (sit-and-stand desk and cycle ergometer). METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This is a randomised controlled trial in cross-over design conducted in a single centre. The study will be pro

Evaluation of three doses of oral trazodone and their impact on handling, activity, and physiological parameters in rabbits: a prospective, blinded, randomized cross-over study.

No study has determined the minimal effective dose of trazodone required to induce behavioral changes and its safety profile in rabbits. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the minimal effective dose of trazodone to improve compliance to handling, and to evaluate associated changes in motor activity, physiological and arterial blood gas parameters. Eight intact female New Zealand White rabbits (2-month-old; 1.66 ± 0.12 kg) were included in this prospective, blinded, randomized cross-over study. After a 10-day acclimation, rabbits randomly received placebo or trazodone 10, 20 or 30 mg/kg o

Effects of Caffeine Intake on Cognitive Performance Related to Total Sleep Deprivation and Time on Task: A Randomized Cross-Over Double-Blind Study.

INTRODUCTION: It is widely admitted that both total sleep deprivation (TSD) and extended task engagement (Time-On-Task, TOT) induce a cognitive fatigue state in healthy subjects. Even if EEG theta activity and adenosine both increase with cognitive fatigue, it remains unclear if these modifications are common mechanisms for both sustained attention and executive processes. METHODS: We performed a double-blind counter-balanced (placebo (PCBO) and caffeine (CAF) - 2×2.5 mg/kg/24 h)) study on 24 healthy subjects (33.7 ± 5.9 y). Subjects participated in an experimental protocol including an habit

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation for apathy in mild cognitive impairment: A double-blind, randomized, sham-controlled, cross-over pilot study.

Apathy is a common and disabling behavioral concomitant of many neurodegenerative conditions. The presence of apathy with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) is linked with heightened rates of conversion to Alzheimer's disease. Improving apathy may slow the neurodegenerative process. The objective was to establish the efficacy of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) in improving apathy in older adults with MCI. An 8-week, double-blind, randomized, sham-controlled cross-over study was conducted in nine subjects (66 ± 9 years) with apathy and MCI. Subjects were randomized to rTMS or s
