BACKGROUND: Photodynamic therapy with a self-adhesive 5-aminolaevulinic acid (5-ALA) patch shows high efficacy rates in the treatment of mild to moderate actinic keratosis (AK) in short term trials.
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of the trial was to follow up patients after successful 5-ALA patch-PDT at 3 month intervals over a total period of 12 months. Patients who had received placebo-PDT or cryosurgery served for comparison.
PATIENTS/METHODS: Three months after therapy, 360 patients from two separate randomized parallel group phase III studies (one superiority trial vs. placebo-PDT, one noninfe

Three cases of condylomata acuminata gigantea were treated with cryosurgery. Compared to conservative surgical treatment of condylomata acuminata gigantea, cryosurgery offers the advantage of rapid necrosis of the condylomata which are repelled without any further surgical intervention and heal without scars. Therefore we consider cryosurgery the more refined technique in treatment of condylomata acuminata gigantea. In extensive involvement, however, cryosurgical measures must be repeated.

Forty-four patients with aneurysmal bone cysts were treated with curettage with or without bone grafting, and in 26 (59%) recurrence developed. Of 11 patients treated with radiation, in only 1 (9%) the disease was not controlled. In 1 patient, radiation-induced sarcoma developed. Since the introduction of cryosurgery 27 years ago, 51 patients have been treated with cryosurgery. The patients had an average age of 13 years (range, 2-32 years). Thirty-four primary aneurysmal bone cysts and 17 secondary aneurysmal bone cysts occurred in association with 7 giant-cell tumors, 5 chondroblastomas, 2 f

Solar lentigo, actinic keratosis and Bowen's disease are common, solar-induced epidermal tumors in the elderly. Management of these lesions depends on the correct diagnosis, which may require biopsy. Treatment of solar lentigo includes cryosurgery followed by topical tretinoin and topical hydroquinone. Actinic keratosis may be treated with cryosurgery, topical 5-fluorouracil, topical tretinoin and, rarely, oral isotretinoin. Bowen's disease requires excision, cryosurgery, electrodesiccation with curettage, or chemosurgery; close follow-up examination is necessary, regardless of the type of tre

Cryosurgery with liquid nitrogen is one of the most used treatments for actinic keratosis. We aimed to study the effectiveness of two consecutive sessions of cryosurgery for actinic keratosis and investigate factors associated with its therapeutic success. Hence, we conducted a longitudinal study including 92 patients of both sexes, aged 50-75 years with 5-50 actinic keratosis on the face and forearms, who underwent cryosurgery and treatment with sunscreen SPF 30, at baseline and after 120 days. The lesions were counted in duplicate by the same examiner before the start of treatment and after

146 patients with precancerous lesions of the oral cavity were observed in our institute between 1988 and 1995. Out of a total of 188 lesions, 110 were single and 36 were multifocal. Histologically 164 lesions were classified as keratosis, 14 as dysplasia, and 10 as lichen ruber planus. 76 patients were treated by cryosurgery, 20 received medical treatment and 3 underwent surgery. Only 47 patients eliminated such risk factors as smoking and alcohol consumption from their daily life-styles. Complete response was 99%, 20.8% and 29.8%, respectively, for cryosurgery, medical treatment and preventi

BACKGROUND: Actinic keratoses (AKs) are clinically significant and require therapy. Efficacy of low-dose (0.5%) 5-fluorouracil with 10% salicylic acid (5-FU/SA) has been shown in randomized comparative trials of hyperkeratotic lesions of various grades.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the efficacy, tolerability and safety of low-dose 5-FU/SA topical solution vs. cryosurgery in patients with moderate/severe (grade II/III) hyperkeratotic AKs (NCT01358851).
METHODS: In an exploratory, open, randomized study, patients with histologically confirmed moderate/severe hyperkeratotic AKs on the face/forehead

Keloids are skin fibroproliferative disorders, resulting from abnormal healing of deep cutaneous injuries. Cryosurgery, the most common treatment for keloids, causes skin traumas. Even though the clinical practice of cryosurgery has increased, effective wound healing therapy is still lacking. In this investigation, nonwoven nanofibrous patches composed of ulvan, a marine sulfated polysaccharide exhibiting anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities, and polyethylene oxide (PEO) were fabricated through electrospinning and characterized. Their wound healing efficacy on skin traumas resulting fr

We compared cryosurgery with the argon and carbon dioxide lasers in a rabbit model to evaluate the permanence of eyelash destruction as well as the gross and histologic effects on the eyelid. Each modality was equally effective in preventing eyelash regrowth. Cryosurgery and the carbon dioxide laser produced the greatest acute soft tissue swelling; the carbon dioxide laser produced the most pronounced gross eyelid alterations. The argon laser produced minimal eyelid tissue change. Long-term histologic tissue alterations were not striking and were confined to eyelids treated with cryosurgery an

Herein, we present a case of cutaneous leishmaniasis successfully treated with a modified immunocryosurgery protocol. A 46-year-old male Caucasian presented with two nodules on the forehead of eight-month duration. He reported an unsuccessful attempt to treat the lesions with a session of cryosurgery elsewhere. During the clinical examination, two adjacent hard mobile nodules that did not infiltrate the underlying tissues were notable. Their diameter was 10 mm and 15 mm, respectively. There were no clinical, laboratory or imaging data in favor of a systemic infection. Histology and polymerase

Chronic rhinitis is known since many years to be a difficult therapeutic problem. Also new methods of treatment did not bring satisfactory good results. In our clinic a cryosurgery was applied in patients with chronic rhinitis. Performed observations indicated that cryosurgery was more successful than other conventional methods, especially in early stage of disease.

Actinic keratosis (AK) is a common premalignant skin lesion that is frequently treated by cryosurgery. Basal cell carcinoma is the most common malignancy of man, and early-stage lesions are usually cured via surgery. Advanced basal cell carcinoma may require more extensive surgery resulting in deformity, and many advanced lesions cannot be treated surgically. Several recent developments have improved therapeutic options for both conditions. Cryosurgery is still a mainstay of treatment for AK, but the introduction of effective topical agents, imiquimod cream and ingenol mebutate, has provided a

This report describes 154 patients treated with cryosurgery for cervical intra-epithelial neoplasia (CIN) over a 3-year period. Standard colposcopic criteria were used to select patients for conservative primary treatment. Treatment failed in 12.5% of 112 patients treated for CIN I (mild dysplasia) and II (moderate dysplasia). Of 42 patients treated for CIN III (severe dysplasia/carcinoma in situ) 45.2% showed persistence of the lesion after primary cryosurgery A second course of treatment resulted in a 98% cure rate for patients with CIN I and II and an 85.7% rate for patients with CIN III. The overall recurrence rate in 166 patients treated with cryosurgery is 10.8%. Recurrent cervical intraepithelial neoplasia is much more common in patients with severe dysplasia. Failures are commonly due to one of four factors. First, cryosurgery is to be used only after adequate colposcopic assessment and a negative endocervical curettage. Cryosurgery is a safe, effective treatment in selected patients, but consideration of surgical management should be given in the older patient who has completed childbearing, particularly those with severe dysplasia or carcinoma in situ. BACKGROUND: A previously reported randomized clinical trial showed treatment of Bowen's disease using photodynamic therapy (PDT) with topically applied delta-aminolaevulinic acid (ALA) to be at least as effective as cryosurgery and to be associated with fewer adverse effects.
OBJECTIVES: To compare ALA-PDT and cryotherapy in the treatment of histopathologically verified basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) in a non-blinded, prospective phase III clinical trial.
METHODS: One lesion from each of 88 patients was included. The BCCs were divided into superficial and nodular lesions. The follow-up period

A review is given of results from a 3-5-year follow-up of 105 young women treated with cryosurgery for a histopathologically verified dysplasia or carcinoma in situ of the uterine cervix. The recovery rate was 88%, with a slightly higher figure in the dysplasia group compared with that of carcinoma in situ. No invasive carcinoma was diagnosed and cases of treatment failure, all diagnosed within one year after cryosurgery, did not develop into a more severe form of neoplasia than previously. No recurrence has been noted so far and very few complications have been recorded. It is concluded that

Benign cervical alterations causing complaints in 44 pregnant women were cured by cryosurgery in all three trimesters of their pregnancy. Recovery resulted in 41 cases after a single and in three extensive chondylomatous changes, after two treatments. The painless out-patient treatment did not influence pregnancy and the course of delivery. Cryosurgery has advantages over traditional surgical interventions, or using chemical caustic agents and it can be applied throughout pregnancy.

Hemorrhoid treatment in Japan consists mainly of conservative therapy and conventional surgery. Cryosurgical hemorrhoidectomy, though still not widely used, has attained a reputation for low profile surgery and relatively painless recovery compared to conventional surgery, in spite of some inevitable problems. Our series includes external hemorrhoids and prolapse, which have been ruled out from the indications for cryosurgery, yet obtained satisfactory results. A threatening drawback is lower digestive tract hemorrhage, which occurred in 19 of 372 prolapse patients (5.1%) after cryosurgery. As
