Detection of Bartonella tamiae, Coxiella burnetii and rickettsiae in arthropods and tissues from wild and domestic animals in northeastern Algeria.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, the scope and importance of emergent vector-borne diseases has increased dramatically. In Algeria, only limited information is currently available concerning the presence and prevalence of these zoonotic diseases. For this reason, we conducted a survey of hematophagous ectoparasites of domestic mammals and/or spleens of wild animals in El Tarf and Souk Ahras, Algeria. METHODS: Using real-time PCR, standard PCR and sequencing, the presence of Bartonella spp., Rickettsia spp., Borrelia spp. and Coxiella burnetii was evaluated in 268/1626 ticks, 136 fleas, 11 Nycteri

Flea Borne-Rickettsia Surveillance in Nuevo Leon, Mexico: An Unexpected Finding.

INTRODUCTION: Fleas represent a neglected group of ectoparasites of significant public health importance, due to their active role in transmitting various infectious agents associated with emerging and re-emerging diseases. In Mexico, flea borne-rickettsioses represent a growing public health concern, driven by the widespread presence of arthropod vectors and a vulnerable population, compounded by limited knowledge of pathogen-vector-host interactions. This study aimed to identify flea species parasitising dogs and cats in the state of Nuevo Leon, Mexico and to detect and characterise Ricketts

Molecular detection of Rickettsia typhi in cats and fleas.

BACKGROUND: Rickettsiatyphi is the etiological agent of murine typhus (MT), a disease transmitted by two cycles: rat-flea-rat, and peridomestic cycle. Murine typhus is often misdiagnosed and underreported. A correct diagnosis is important because MT can cause severe illness and death. Our previous seroprevalence results pointed to presence of human R. typhi infection in our region; however, no clinical case has been reported. Although cats have been related to MT, no naturally infected cat has been described. The aim of the study is to confirm the existence of R. typhi in our location analyzin

Absence of antibodies to Rickettsia spp., Bartonella spp., Ehrlichia spp. and Coxiella burnetii in Tahiti, French Polynesia.

BACKGROUND: In the Pacific islands countries and territories, very little is known about the incidence of infectious diseases due to zoonotic pathogens. To our knowledge, human infections due to Rickettsia spp., Coxiella burnetii, Ehrlichia spp. and Bartonella spp. have never been reported in French Polynesia; and infections due to C. burnetti have been reported worldwide except in New Zealand. To evaluate the prevalence of this disease, we conducted a serosurvey among French Polynesian blood donors. METHODS: The presence of immunoglobulin G antibodies against R. felis, R. typhi, R. conorii,

Prevalence of vectors of the spotted fever group Rickettsiae and murine typhus in a Bedouin town in Israel.

A survey of the vectors of spotted fever group Rickettsiae and of murine typhus was carried out in Rahat, a Bedouin town in the Negev Desert, where the diseases are endemic. Houses with known cases of spotted fever group Rickettsiae or murine typhus were compared with those without reported clinical cases. A neighboring Jewish community, Lehavim, where no cases of spotted fever group Rickettsiae and murine typhus were reported in recent years, was used as a control. In the houses of patients with spotted fever group Rickettsiae in Rahat, an average of 7.4 times more ticks were found than in co

Cytauxzoon paradoxurus n. sp., a novel Cytauxzoon species identified in common palm civets in Singapore.

BACKGROUND: The common palm civet (Paradoxurus musangus) is a species native to Southeast Asia. Highly adapted to urbanised environments, these civets can often be found in proximity to humans and companion animals, raising the concern of pathogen transmission at the human-wildlife and wildlife-domestic animal interface. Whilst there have been reports of various bacteria and viruses detected in civets, little is known about the protozoa that they may harbour. In this study, we screened the common palm civets in Singapore for tick-borne protozoan parasites known as piroplasms. METHODS: Over a

An insight into the draft genome of the Oriental rat flea, Xenopsylla cheopis, together with its Wolbachia endosymbiont.

BACKGROUND: The Oriental rat flea, Xenopsylla cheopis, is a main vector of plague caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis. Transcriptomic analysis of this insect and the interaction between Yersinia and the flea digestive tract have been the subject of several studies. However, to develop more refined studies on this vector in the future, we sequence and describe a draft genome of the rat flea Xenopsylla cheopis, discuss the physiological implications of its genetic features, and compare them with the only other sequenced member of the Siphonaptera, the cat flea, Ctenocephalides felis. Feline heartworm disease and environmental allergens hypersensitivity: is there a link?

BACKGROUND: Cats can be infected by Dirofilaria immitis, the causative agent of heartworm disease, characterized by respiratory signs, airway hyperreactivity, remodelling and inflammation. Allergy is a multifactorial pathology, and the role of a number of helminth parasites in the development of allergies in humans and other species has been demonstrated in many studies. The aim of the present study was to verify whether cats seropositive for D. immitis present hypersensitivity to some environmental allergens. METHODS: Blood samples were collected from 120 cats and tested for the presence of

Fleas of wild mammals carrying pathogenic bacteria in Argentinian Patagonia: A study based on wildlife roadkill.

Fleas (Insecta: Siphonaptera) are recognised vectors of bacteria that affect human and other animal health, whose reservoirs are in the majority mammals. Among these, some species of the genera Rickettsia (Rickettsiales: Rickettsiaceae) and Bartonella (Rhizobiales: Bartonellaceae) are emerging and re-emerging throughout the world; however, their circulation across vast regions of Argentina and numerous animal species, particularly wild species remains largely unknown. The study of wild animal roadkill provides valuable insights into parasitic associations and the presence of pathogenic microor

Dog ectoparasites as sentinels for pathogenic Rickettsia and Bartonella in rural Guatemala.

Fleas and ticks serve as vectors of multiple pathogens in the genera Rickettsia and Bartonella that cause diseases in humans and other animals. Although human rickettsiosis and bartonellosis have been reported in all countries in Central America, limited research has been conducted to investigate the natural cycles of flea- and tick-borne rickettsiosis and bartonellosis, especially in Guatemala. We evaluated dog parasites as sentinels for zoonotic disease risk in rural Guatemala by sampling ticks and fleas from dogs, which were then identified and individually screened for Rickettsia and Barto

A field trial of spinosad for the treatment and prevention of flea infestation in shepherd dogs living in close proximity to flea-infested sheep.

BACKGROUND: Three flea species, Pulex irritans, Ctenocephalides canis and C. felis parasitize shepherd dogs living on sheep farms in Greece. The aim of this randomized, blinded, placebo-controlled trial was to examine the efficacy of spinosad, when administered three times every 4 weeks, as the only intervention to treat and prevent flea infestations in shepherd dogs living on sheep farms. METHODS: Thirty dogs living on sheep farms and infested by at least 24 fleas were randomly allocated into equal groups. Group A dogs received spinosad (45-70 mg/kg body weight), every 4 weeks for three admi

Biological, seasonal and environmental factors associated with Pulex irritans infestation of dairy goats in Greece.

The objectives of the present study were to study the fauna of fleas infesting dairy goats in Greece, the spectrum of hosts each flea species infests, identify risk factors in the environment, and goat management practices that favour flea infestation of goats, and describe the seasonal variation of infestation in goats. For this purpose, a total of 64 herds, with a history of flea infestation in goats, were visited during June and July of 2002 for data collection on flea burdens, species of fleas on goats, and other farm or pet animal species in the farm. Also data were collected on herd char

Identification and pathogen screening of ectoparasites from companion animals in urban Vientiane, Lao PDR.

Ticks and fleas are vectors of medically important infectious diseases globally, such as Rickettsiae. These pathogens are frequently reported in Southeast Asia, including Laos; however, there are very few comprehensive reports on their prevalence and vector diversity in urban areas. This study collected ectoparasites from companion animals to assess pathogen prevalence and exposure risk. In five veterinary clinics across Vientiane capital, ectoparasites were collected from dogs and cats and identified to the species level using both morphological and molecular methods. Ectoparasite DNA samples

Spotted fever group rickettsiae in black rats, pets, and humans in Zungarococha community, A rural area in the surroundings of Iquitos, Peru.

Rickettsiae are a family of ectoparasite-borne bacteria that can produce high morbidity and mortality among humans. There are scarce data on rickettsial ecology in rural areas of the Peruvian Amazon basin, where seroprevalence has not been determined, and the identities of animals acting as reservoirs of these bacteria are not known. We conducted a cross-sectional study in Zungarococha (between 2019 and 2021), a rural community located approximately 20 km away from Iquitos city. Blood samples were collected from humans (175), dogs (123), and cats (12). Blood samples and tissues were collected

DETECTION OF RICKETTSIA AND BARTONELLA IN FLEAS AND TICKS COLLECTED FROM PETS AT VETERINARY CLINICS IN GEORGIA, UNITED STATES.

Many human infections are transmitted through contact with household pets. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to determine the occurrence of ticks and fleas on pets (dogs and cats) in local veterinary clinics in Statesboro, Georgia. We screened ectoparasites for Rickettsia and Bartonella and assessed owner knowledge and practices related to tick- and flea-borne diseases. Ectoparasites were collected and identified using standard taxonomic keys, and their genomic DNA was extracted. Three TaqMan assays were used to test ectoparasites for flea-borne Rickettsia DNA. Nested PCR targeting

Characterization of a novel transitional group Rickettsia species (Rickettsia tillamookensis sp. nov.) from the western black-legged tick, Ixodes pacificus.

A previously unrecognized Rickettsia species was isolated in 1976 from a pool of Ixodes pacificus ticks collected in 1967 from Tillamook County, Oregon, USA. The isolate produced low fever and mild scrotal oedema following intraperitoneal injection into male guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus). Subsequent serotyping characterized this isolate as distinct from recognized typhus and spotted fever group Rickettsia species; nonetheless, the isolate remained unevaluated by molecular techniques and was not identified to species level for the subsequent 30 years. Ixodes pacificus is the most frequently ide
