Heterogeneity of the myocardium. Function of the left and right ventricle under normal and pathological conditions.

A number of important differences can be found between the left ventricle (LV) and right ventricle (RV) of the heart under physiological conditions. In anatomy, the most important is probably the architecture of the atrioventricular valve and its annulus. The LV has a mitral valve (with two cusps) and a firm annulus, while the RV has a tricuspid valve with a greater total area, but relatively small cuspid areas, and an elastic annulus. The difference in the blood supply is important. Owing to high intramural pressure, the coronary flow in the wall of the LV occurs only during the diastole; in

Craniofacial and Dental Anomalies of a Patient Carrying Two MicroRNA Variants: A Proof-Of-Concept Case Report.

Craniofacial and dentofacial anomalies often result from disruptions in embryogenetic processes driven by genetic alterations. Dental development involves complex interactions between coding and non-coding genes, orchestrated by a network of signaling pathways. Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) has identified genes, particularly in the WNT signaling pathway, associated with dental anomalies. MicroRNAs (miRNAs), small non-coding RNA molecules, play a crucial role in post-transcriptional regulation. Variants in miRNAs, such as in MIR146A, have been linked to various craniofacial pathologies. A 10

Bimaxillary transverse constriction in adults: Short-term follow-up of non-surgical arch expansion.

OBJECTIVE: Concurrent maxillary and mandibular expansion is a treatment option for patients with maxillary and mandibular transverse constriction. These patients do not present with crossbite but require expansion due to narrow arches and associated crowding, dark buccal corridors and decreased anterior arch contour. The objective of the study is to first establish Bimaxillary Transverse Constriction as an under-recognized malocclusion and second to evaluate whether in adults the maxillary and mandibular arches can be successfully and safely expanded. SETTING AND SAMPLE POPULATION: Pre- and p

Use of autologous platelet rich plasma to treat gingival recession in esthetic periodontal surgery.

BACKGROUND: Multiple approaches have been used to replace lost, damaged or diseased gingival tissues. Coronally advanced flap (CAF) and the use of guided tissue regeneration are among the successfully used surgical techniques to treat gingival recession. Platelet rich plasma (PRP), containing autologous growth factors, has been shown to promote soft-tissue healing. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of PRP in combination with CAF in the treatment of gingival recession. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 15 systemically healthy patients with buccal Miller's class

Implant treatment in grafted and native bone in patients affected by ectodermal dysplasia.

Ectodermal dysplasia (ED) is a congenital syndrome characterized chiefly by abnormalities of tissues of ectodermal origin, namely skin, nails, hair, and teeth. Dental treatment of patients with ED is necessary because it affords the opportunity to develop normal forms of speech, chewing, swallowing, and normal facial support. Because there are few reports focusing on implants inserted in bone grafted in patients with ED, we therefore performed a retrospective study on 44 implants inserted in 4 patients to detect those variables acting on survival and crestal bone remodeling around implant neck

Retrospective study of standard-diameter implants inserted into allografts.

PURPOSE: In the last decade, several investigators reported that standard-diameter implants (SDIs) achieved excellent results. However, no report is available regarding SDIs inserted into fresh-frozen bone (FFB). We conducted a retrospective study on a series of SDIs (diameter, 3.75 mm) inserted into homologous FFB to evaluate their clinical outcome. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The SDIs inserted with FFB were analyzed. Several variables were investigated regarding patients, anatomic sites, implants, and prosthetic restoration. Implant failure and peri-implant bone resorption were considered predic

The relationship between alveolar bone height and age in the primary dentition. A retrospective longitudinal radiographic study.

The natural history of changes in attachment level in the primary dentition should be determined before considering diagnostic criteria for periodontal diseases in children. The present study was designed to describe longitudinal changes in the distance between the alveolar bone crest and the cementoenamel junction (ABC-CEJ) determined radiographically. Bite-wing radiographs were obtained from 33 children as part of a routine annual dental examination in a rural community. The ABC-CEJ distance of 1500 sites located at the mesial and distal aspects of primary molars and distal aspect of primary

Effect of non-surgical periodontal therapy. VI. Localization of sites with probing attachment loss.

Incisors, cuspids and premolars in 49 patients with advanced chronic periodontitis were treated with initial, non-surgical periodontal therapy. The results were monitored by probing attachment level measurements at 6 sites of each tooth every 3rd month during a period of 24 months. A series of 9 probing attachment level measurements for each site was subjected to linear regression analysis. The slope of the regression line, the projected probing attachment loss during the 24-month interval (delta y) and the probability level of the slope were calculated for each site. 2 groups of sites with pr

Regional bond strengths of resins to human root dentine.

OBJECTIVES: The demand for restoration of root dentine defects such as cervical erosion and root caries has significantly increased recently, but there is limited information on the performance of the adhesive resins to radicular dentine. The purpose of this study was to measure the regional tensile bond strength (TBS) of composite bonded to human root and coronal dentine, and to observe the interface between resin and root dentine by SEM. METHODS: Human extracted cuspid teeth were used to measure TBS with a new microtensile bond test. Enamel and cementum were removed from the labial tooth su

Efficacy of acellular dermal matrix and coronally advanced flaps for the treatment of induced gingival recession defects: a histomorphometric study in dogs.

BACKGROUND: Gingival recession (GR) defects can be treated by various methods, including acellular dermal matrix (ADM) or coronally advanced flaps (CAFs). The aim of this histomorphometric experiment is to compare the efficacy of ADM and CAF for treating GR defects in dogs. METHODS: In eight beagle dogs, a critical-size labial GR defect was surgically induced on bilateral maxillary cuspids under general anesthesia. Test sites received ADM and CAF, and control sites underwent CAF treatment alone. Plaque index (PI), bleeding index (BI), and gingival index (GI) were measured at 4 weeks (baseline

Guided tissue regeneration with a bioabsorbable polylactic acid membrane in gingival recessions. A histometric study in dogs.

BACKGROUND: The goal of this investigation was to histologically and histometrically evaluate the healing process of gingival recessions treated by guided tissue regeneration with bioabsorbable polylactic acid membranes (GTR group) and to compare it to that obtained with coronally positioned flaps (CPF group). METHODS: Gingival recessions were surgically created on the buccal aspect of the upper cuspids of 5 mongrel dogs. The defects (5x7 mm) were exposed to plaque accumulation for 3 months. The contralateral defects were then randomly assigned to each group. After 3 months of healing, the do

Maxillary canines retained in the palate: tutorial for clinical cases.

INTRODUCTION: The second most common form of dental impaction is the maxillary permanent canine, behind only the third molars. This condition affects approximately 2% of the population, with most cases (between 80% and 90%) resulting in impaction in the palate. The consequences of a canine impaction may include migration and root resorption in adjacent teeth, reduction of the dental arch perimeter, formation of cysts, and infections. OBJECTIVE: We developed an interactive PowerPoint tutorial to assist professionals in selecting the most appropriate approach for cases of unerupted and palatall

Management of an infectious complication appearing in a transcanine implant: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Maxillary canine impaction is the second most common dental eruption anomaly, affecting approximately 0.2-3% of individuals, with a higher incidence in females. This condition often results in complications such as the misalignment of adjacent teeth, root resorption, and the development of cystic lesions. In some cases, abstention is recommended for impacted canine is kept with the lacteal tooth held on the dental arch. But in the longer term an implant therapy is nevertheless indicated. Does Current Evidence Support the Discussion Around the Guidance Theory? A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis on the Association Between Maxillary Lateral Incisor Agenesis and Displacement or Impaction of the Permanent Canine.

Palatal impaction of the maxillary canine is commonly considered as a genetic condition, while the lateral incisor root has been suggested to guide maxillary permanent canine eruption. This review assessed whether agenesis of the maxillary lateral incisor is associated with eruption disturbances of the maxillary canine (displacement or impaction). Unrestricted searches in six databases for observational case-control human studies until May 2024 assessing eruption disturbances of the permanent maxillary canine in conjunction with permanent maxillary lateral incisor agenesis were performed. Orthodontic Treatment of Palatally Impacted Canines in Severe Non-Syndromic Oligodontia with the Use of Mini-Implants: A Case Report.

Background: The risk of palatally displaced canines (PDCs) rises in patients with tooth agenesis. The orthodontic extrusion and alignment of PDCs require adequate anchorage to enable tooth movement and control the side effects. There is no paper presenting treatment in the case of severe oligodontia with simultaneous PDCs and the use of mini-implants (MIs) for their orthodontic extrusion. Case presentation: A 15-year-old patient presented with non-syndromic oligodontia and bilateral PDCs. Cone beam computed tomography revealed that both PDCs were in proximity to the upper incisors' roots. Ther

[Diagnosis and orthodontic treatment strategy of complete canine transposition].

Tooth transposition is a challenge for orthodontists, especially in correcting the order of teeth. At present, the literature on transposition canines mainly focuses on epidemiological studies and case reports, and no systematic treatment guidance has been formed. In this article, the definition and classification, epidemiology and etiology, imaging diagnosis, treatment and risk control of transposed canines are systematically described in order to provide reference for clinical practice.
