[Health condition of female aerobic dance instructors. Subjective symptoms and related factors].

Aerobic dance has recently become popular in all age groups, but the injuries among full-time and part-time aerobic dance instructors have rarely been pointed out in Japan. In this study the subjective symptoms of 63 female instructors in Gifu area were evaluated through health questionnaire. As a control group, 94 female students of the same age group were also included to compare the prevalence of subjective symptoms. Multiple logistic regression analysis was applied to observe the relation between instructors' symptoms and working conditions. The following results were obtained: 1) Complain

ECG effects of aerobic dance: a study of five exercise-conditioned young women.

Monitoring of the heart rate of five healthy well-conditioned women during an aerobic dance routine showed that maximum rates were within acceptable limits for exercise tachycardia except in one subject, who had paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia that subsequently converted to sinus tachycardia. Thus, although aerobic dance seems a benign form of exercise, it can be intense enough to trigger dysrhythmias. Before recommending or approving it for any patient, the physician should take into consideration the person's age, health, and physical fitness level.

Blindness, dancing extremities, and corpus callosum and brain stem involvement: an unusual presentation of fulminant subacute sclerosing panencephalitis.

A 4-year-old girl presented with acute visual loss followed 2 weeks later with loss of speech and audition, fulminant neuroregression, and choreo-athetoid movements of extremities. Fundus showed bilateral chorioretinitis. Electroencephalography showed periodic complexes. Measles antibody titers were elevated in both serum and cerebrospinal fluid, consistent with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis. Neuroimaging showed discontiguous involvement of splenium of the corpus callosum and ventral pons with sparing of cortical white matter. Our case highlights the atypical clinical and radiologic pres

A comparison of Irish set dancing and exercises for people with Parkinson's disease: a phase II feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: People with idiopathic Parkinson's disease (PD) frequently have low activity levels, poor mobility and reduced quality of life. Although increased physical activity may improve mobility, balance and wellbeing, adherence to exercises and activity programs over the longer term can be challenging, particularly for older people with progressive neurological conditions such as PD. Physical activities that are engaging and enjoyable, such as dancing, might enhance adherence over the long term. The objective of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of a randomized controlled trial of

Dancing with the Dust Devil: Examining the Lung Mycobiome of Sonoran Desert Wild Mammals and the Effect of Coccidioides Presence.

Microbiome studies report a decrease in diversity associated with active infections. Under the endozoan hypothesis, Coccidioides can inhabit a host without causing disease. In this study, we describe and compare the lung mycobiome of Coccidioides-positive and -negative samples obtained from wildlife. If Coccidioides is not causing infection, we predict there will be no differences in the mycobiome between positive and negative samples. Lung samples were obtained from mammals previously trapped in Tucson, Arizona, USA (n = 26), and Mesa, Arizona, USA (n = 14). Samples were screened for Coccidio

Zumba dancing and aerobic exercise can improve working memory, motor function, and depressive symptoms in female patients with Fibromyalgia.

BACKGROUND: Patients suffering from the Fibromyalgia (FM) have impaired cognitive function, reduced physical activity and more marked depressive symptoms. While physical activity and exercise therapy are not typically part of the standard treatment for this syndrome, there is mounting evidence that regular participation in activities involving physical exertion has a positive impact on psychological functioning in people with FM. This study compares the impact of two different interventions, aerobic exercise training and Zumba dancing, on working memory, motor function and depressive symptoms

A prospective study of the presentation and management of dancing eye syndrome/opsoclonus-myoclonus syndrome in the United Kingdom.

The incidence, mode of presentation and management of Dancing Eye Syndrome/Opsoclonus-Myoclonus Syndrome (DES/OMS) was prospectively evaluated in 20 United Kingdom (UK) paediatric neurology centres by questionnaire over a 24-month period between 2003 and 2005. Nineteen children were notified, giving an incidence of 0.18 cases per million total population per year. Mean age at presentation was 18 months (range 3-42 months). Fifteen families consented to participate in the study. Atypical features were present in 6/15 cases including very delayed presentation of opsoclonus, dysphagia, and rapid

Quality over quantity: joint group dance strengthens schoolchildren's social connections and wellbeing.

BACKGROUND: Children are experiencing high levels of loneliness and mental health problems around the globe, with those from underserved communities being affected disproportionately. Group dance programmes, which facilitate social connections and wellbeing, can buffer against loneliness. However, we know little about the mechanisms behind the effectiveness of these programmes and their long-term and group-level effects. This study examined whether it is mere engagement in group dance or better individual dance performance that fosters social connections and wellbeing. METHODS: A pre-post des

Aesthetic speed preferences when viewing dance synchronize to a 'natural' pace of human movement.

The human body in motion is typically in service of everyday tasks - but it can also be aesthetically pleasing, as in dance. Is there a common property underlying how we perceive and appreciate human motion in both everyday and aesthetic contexts? Here we focus on one of the most basic features of motion: the speed at which it unfolds. In a 'set-the-pace' task, people adjusted the playback speed of a broad range of videos to what was "maximally pleasing" to them. This method revealed three distinct correlates of aesthetic speed preferences across multiple experiments and replications. First, w

Relationship between empathic tendencies and trait anxiety among individuals interested in folk dances.

INTRODUCTION: Folk dances, which are among the most important cultural elements reflecting societies' historical heritage, ways of life, and shared values, are regarded not only as an art form but also as a functional tool that contributes to an individual's psychological well-being. Because they are based on physical activity and involve group participation, they can positively impact empathy and anxiety. The primary objective of this study is to examine the psychosocial characteristics of individuals who participate in folk dances, with a focus on the relationship between empathy and anxiety

Toxic Tango in Parkinson's Disease: A dance between αSyn and iron import, export and speciation.

The intricate interplay between brain iron homeostasis and pathological α-Synuclein (αSyn) in Parkinson's Disease (PD) is still unclear. αSyn is the primary protein involved in disease progression and promotes cytotoxicity by impairing dopamine synthesis, mitochondrial dysfunction and disrupts brain iron homeostasis. Iron has further revealed to induce αSyn aggregation however, the exact mechanism of interaction between iron and αSyn is uncertain. Many studies have demonstrated an imbalance of iron homeostasis in PD pathogenesis, including macroautophagy related to αSyn aggregate and accumulat

Can Emotional or Physical Abuse Be a Risk Factor of Chronic Musculoskeletal Conditions in Professional Dance?

OBJECTIVE: In professional dance, the injury rate is extremely high and dancers have a great chance to experience at least one injury during their careers. Since the #metoo campaign, many abuse cases showed up in the dance industry, resulting in media coverage. Results indicate that dancers had a significantly higher distribution of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) compared to the broad population. In this study, we investigate pathological dissociation, quantify chronic musculoskeletal conditions and evaluate abusive experiences. METHODS: Questionnaire-based dataset filled out online by
