Increasing Diversity in the Physician Workforce: Pathway Programs and Predictive Analytics.

PROBLEM: Lack of diversity in the physician workforce has well-documented negative impacts on health outcomes. Evidence supports the use of pathway or pipeline programs to recruit underrepresented in medicine students. However, data on how a pathway program should deliver instruction are lacking. This report describes a multiyear project to build such a system with the goal of increasing diversity within medical school cohorts and ultimately the physician workforce. APPROACH: In the 2015-2016 academic year, the Ponce Health Sciences University started a 3-phase project to create a data-driven

Artificial Intelligence and 3D Reconstruction in Complex Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) Surgery: A Comprehensive Review of the Literature.

Background: The management of complex hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) pathologies demands exceptional surgical precision. Traditional two-dimensional imaging has limitations in depicting intricate anatomical relationships, potentially complicating preoperative planning. This review explores the synergistic application of three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction and artificial intelligence (AI) to support surgical decision-making in complex HPB cases. Methods: This narrative review synthesized the existing literature on the applications, benefits, limitations, and implementation challenges of 3D re

Machine Learning-Based Models to Predict Drug-Induced Liver Injury (DILI) to Assist Medicinal Chemistry.

Drug-induced liver injury (DILI) is a leading cause of drug failure and post-market withdrawals. Traditional preclinical methods fail to detect up to 40-45% of clinical hepatotoxicity cases. Computational approaches, particularly those based on machine learning and deep learning (DL), are emerging as promising tools to support medicinal chemistry and early drug discovery, though their predictive capabilities remain under active investigation. In this perspective, we review the development of DILI annotation data sets, tracing their growth from small collections to large, comprehensive resource

Machine Learning forecasting of dengue in São Paulo using virtual data augmentation and urban incident predictors: Addressing the exceptional surge of cases in 2024.

Dengue remains one of the most critical vector-borne diseases globally, with Brazil consistently reporting the highest incidence in the Americas. The 2024 epidemic was the largest in the country's history, with São Paulo as its epicenter. This study developed and evaluated a machine learning (ML) framework to forecast dengue under extreme epidemic conditions, focusing on enhancing model robustness when testing data exceed the range of historical observations. A novel virtual data augmentation strategy was introduced to expose models to synthetic large-scale outbreaks and to assess the predicti

Artificial intelligence in nephrology: predicting CKD progression and personalizing treatment.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) represents a major and expanding global health challenge, with prevalence rising due to aging populations, diabetes, hypertension, and environmental factors. Conventional risk assessment tools such as the CKD Epidemiology Collaboration equation and the Kidney Failure Risk Equation are limited in precision, generalizability, and their ability to identify rapid progressors in early stages. This review examines the transformative role of artificial intelligence (AI), encompassing machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing, and multimodal data integra

Accelerating supercritical pharmaceutical formulation via interpretable data-driven prediction of drug solubility.

Drug solubility in supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) plays a pivotal role in the development of particle engineering, drug loading, and solvent-free pharmaceutical formulations. However, experimental solubility determination in supercritical systems remains costly, time-consuming, and compound-specific. In this study, an interpretable data-driven framework is proposed to support pharmaceutical formulation scientists by accurately predicting drug solubility in SC-CO2 while elucidating the governing physicochemical factors. Multiple machine learning regressors, including Extreme Gradient Boo

Machine learning-driven intelligent transformation of food safety: from multi-source risk identification to whole-chain preventive control.

The globalization of food supply chains has brought about increasingly complex food safety risks. Traditional approaches often have limitations such as low efficiency and poor adaptability when processing large-scale data, conducting real-time risk assessments, and analyzing multi-factor correlations, making it difficult to effectively manage these risks. As a data-driven intelligent technology, machine learning (ML) offers promising solutions by enabling efficient and accurate food safety management. This review systematically summarizes the progress of ML applications in several key domains,

Machine learning to improve analysis of disability in electronic health records: an untapped opportunity for health inequities research.

Electronic Health Records (EHRs) are a leading source of epidemiological data, but often lack information on a patient's disability status. This gap hampers our ability to analyse the full scope of health inequities faced by people with disabilities. Current approaches to identify disability within EHRs have limitations because of inadequate proxies for disability or issues linking data sources. Machine learning (ML) offer unprecedented opportunities to create disability markers within EHRs, such as through unsupervised learning to classify disability groups and Natural Language Processing to

irAE.AI: AI-powered exploration of real-world immune-related adverse events.

OBJECTIVES: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have revolutionized cancer treatment, but their clinical benefit is limited by the onset of immune-related adverse events (irAEs). Real-world pharmacovigilance data, such as the FDA's Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database, offer the scale needed to better characterize and understand these toxicities. However, extracting cohorts and normalizing complex fields requires expertise in data preprocessing, technical terminology harmonization, and programming. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We curated an oncology-specific FAERS dataset of ICI-treated

Application research on surveillance and predictive modeling of respiratory diseases in Baise City based on meteorological big data analysis.

Respiratory diseases are increasingly influenced by meteorological variability, yet few studies have applied high-resolution environmental data and advanced forecasting models to quantify this relationship in climate-sensitive regions such as southern China. This study aims to characterize how climate variability drives respiratory disease dynamics by quantifying the influence of meteorological factors and constructing predictive models for early intervention. It further seeks to advance climate-resilient health surveillance through the application of machine learning and time-series forecasti

A Retrospective, Longitudinal, Claims-Based Comparison of Concomitant Diagnoses Between Individuals with and Without Down Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with Down syndrome (DS) experience various comorbidities in excess of the prevalence seen among the non-DS population. However, the extent of the excess burden of comorbidities specifically within commercially and publicly insured DS populations aged < 21 years is not currently known. OBJECTIVES: To (a) describe the most common diagnoses among individuals with DS who have either commercial or Medicaid insurance and (b) compare the prevalence of those diagnoses between DS cases and non-DS controls. METHODS: This was a longitudinal, retrospective study using health care

Towards Better Bus Networks: A Visual Analytics Approach.

Bus routes are typically updated every 3-5 years to meet constantly changing travel demands. However, identifying deficient bus routes and finding their optimal replacements remain challenging due to the difficulties in analyzing a complex bus network and the large solution space comprising alternative routes. Most of the automated approaches cannot produce satisfactory results in real-world settings without laborious inspection and evaluation of the candidates. The limitations observed in these approaches motivate us to collaborate with domain experts and propose a visual analytics solution f

Identification of risk factors for sessile and traditional serrated adenomas of the colon by using big data analysis.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Little is known about the risk factors associated with serrated polyps, because the early studies, which occurred before the new World Health Organization classification was introduced, included mixtures of serrated polyps. This study aimed to evaluate the risk factors associated with the presence of sessile serrated adenomas (SSAs) and traditional serrated adenomas (TSAs) using big data analytics. METHODS: Using a case-control design, we evaluated the risk factors associated with the presence of SSAs and TSAs. Subjects who underwent colonoscopies from 2002 to 2012 as part
