Gamma Knife radiosurgery for central neurocytoma: a quantitative systematic review and metanalysis.

Central neurocytomas (CN) are rare tumors within the central nervous system. Originating from the septum pellucidum and subependymal cells, they are typically found in the third and lateral ventricles. For this reason, they may lead to hydrocephalus and increased intracranial pressure. CNs are generally benign lesions that exhibit locally aggressive behavior and a high recurrence rate. Complete surgical resection is the preferred treatment; however, due to their anatomical location, this is often not feasible. Based on these findings, Gamma Knife radiosurgery (GKRS) has been introduced for man

Association between timed up-and-go test and subsequent pneumonia: A cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia is a risk factor for pneumonia in the elderly, and the timed up-and-go test (TUG) can be used as a screening tool for sarcopenia in this population. This study aimed to evaluate the association between TUG test results and future pneumonia or ventilator care. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From the National Health Insurance Service-Senior Cohort database, we identified 19,804 people without neurological diseases who underwent the TUG test in the National Screening Program for Transitional Ages at the age of 66 years during 2007-2008. Gait abnormality was defined as taking 10 s

World of Crayfish™: a web platform towards real-time global mapping of freshwater crayfish and their pathogens.

Freshwater crayfish are amongst the largest macroinvertebrates and play a keystone role in the ecosystems they occupy. Understanding the global distribution of these animals is often hindered due to a paucity of distributional data. Additionally, non-native crayfish introductions are becoming more frequent, which can cause severe environmental and economic impacts. Management decisions related to crayfish and their habitats require accurate, up-to-date distribution data and mapping tools. Such data are currently patchily distributed with limited accessibility and are rarely up-to-date. To addr

The impact of surgery and age on mortality with primary trachea malignant tumors: a retrospective study based on propensity-score matching analysis.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to explore the survival significance of surgery and age on the prognosis of patients with primary trachea malignancies. METHODS: The entire cohort of 637 patients with primary malignant trachea tumors was used to perform the main analyses. The data of those patients were from a public database. Overall survival (OS) curves were drawn by the Kaplan-Meier method and compared by the Log-rank test. The univariable and multivariable Cox regression analyses calculated the hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for overall mortality. The propensity-score matchin

Update in the understanding of new daily persistent headache.

Background Accumulating evidence suggests various specific triggers may lead to new daily persistent headache (NDPH)-like presentations, suggesting that new daily persistent headache is a heterogenous syndrome, and challenging the concept that new daily persistent headache is a primary headache disorder.Method We searched the PubMed database up to August 2022 for keywords including persistent daily headache with both primary and secondary etiologies. We summarized the literature and provided a narrative review of the clinical presentation, diagnostic work-ups, possible pathophysiology, treatme

A meta-analysis investigating the outcomes and correlation between heart rate variability biofeedback training on depressive symptoms and heart rate variability outcomes versus standard treatment in comorbid adult populations.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Heart rate variability biofeedback (HRVB) has previously been used to ameliorate depressive symptoms but its uses for tackling depressive symptoms in an array of comorbid adult patients is less established. This meta-analysis aims to evaluate whether HRVB is a useful tool to reduce depressive symptoms and improve HRV relative to standard treatment in adult comorbid populations, while also attempting to establish the association between the two outcomes. METHODS: An extensive literature review was conducted using several databases including PubMed, Cinahl, Medline, Web of s

Modelling Adverse Events with the TOP Phenotyping Framework.

The detection and prevention of medication-related health risks, such as medication-associated adverse events (AEs), is a major challenge in patient care. A systematic review on the incidence and nature of in-hospital AEs found that 9.2% of hospitalised patients suffer an AE, and approximately 43% of these AEs are considered to be preventable. Adverse events can be identified using algorithms that operate on electronic medical records (EMRs) and research databases. Such algorithms normally consist of structured filter criteria and rules to identify individuals with certain phenotypic traits, t

Construct of qualitative diagnostic biomarkers specific for glioma by pairing serum microRNAs.

BACKGROUND: Serum microRNAs (miRNAs) are promising non-invasive biomarkers for diagnosing glioma. However, most reported predictive models are constructed without a large enough sample size, and quantitative expression levels of their constituent serum miRNAs are susceptible to batch effects, decreasing their clinical applicability. METHODS: We propose a general method for detecting qualitative serum predictive biomarkers using a large cohort of miRNA-profiled serum samples (n = 15,460) based on the within-sample relative expression orderings of miRNAs. RESULTS: Two panels of miRNA pairs (mi

Oesophagopleural fistula after pneumonectomy: A systematic review and case series.

INTRODUCTION: There is a paucity of data on the optimal management of oesophagopleural fistula (OPF) following pneumonectomy. The current published literature is limited to case reports and small case series. Although rare, OPF can have a significant impact on both the morbidity and mortality of patients. METHODS: Two cases of OPF managed at our institution were reported. A systematic review was then conducted in line with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidance concerning OPF following pneumonectomy. Demographic, operative and management data were analysed

Factor activity levels and bleeding scores in pediatric hemophilia carriers enrolled in the ATHNdataset.

BACKGROUND: Multiple studies have now shown that a significant proportion of hemophilia carriers meet the criteria for having hemophilia and/or report abnormal bleeding. However, to date, investigations of hemophilia carriers have almost exclusively involved women over 18 years of age. Little is known about factor activity levels and bleeding scores in carriers during childhood. We queried a large deidentified database of subjects with bleeding disorders residing in the United States to determine factor activity levels and bleeding scores. PROCEDURES: The ATHNdataset was queried for hemophili

Geographic cohorting by clinical care team: a narrative review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Geographic cohorting refers to localization of inpatients to designated hospital areas (typically a unit or a set of beds) based on specified criteria. One such criterion that has been commonly discussed and studied since the early days of the hospitalist movement in the US is a patient's assigned clinical care team. Because implementing cohorting of this type requires substantial operational investment, it is important to understand the benefits and the tradeoffs associated with bringing patients into closer spatial proximity with their full team of providers and all
