Utilization of MRI in surgical decision making in the shoulder.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study is to evaluate both the utility of MRI scans and reports used in the current practice routine of shoulder surgeons and their surgical decision-making process. METHODS: Ninety-three shoulder-specialised orthopaedic surgeons of the Canadian Shoulder and Elbow Society (CSES) Orthopaedic Association were surveyed in 2020 anonymously online to help identify the use of MR-imaging and reports in managing shoulder disorders and surgical decision process. RESULTS: Thirty out of 93 (32.25%) CSES fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeons participated. Respondents request

Effects of cocaine and HIV on decision-making abilities.

Our study aimed to understand the impact of cocaine dependence on high-risk decision-making abilities in individuals with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and individuals with cocaine dependence. We recruited 99 participants (27 HIV/Cocaine, 20 HIV Only, 26 Cocaine Only, and 26 Healthy Controls). The Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) was applied to assess decision-making abilities. Independent and interactive effects of HIV status and cocaine dependence were examined using 2 × 2 factorial ANCOVA with premorbid IQ (WRAT-4: WR) as the covariate. We found cocaine dependence had a significant adverse

The aversive value of pain in human decision-making.

BACKGROUND: In order to decide between avoiding pain or pursuing competing rewards, pain must be assigned an abstract value that can be traded against that of competing goods. To assess the relationship between subjectively perceived pain and its value, we conducted an experiment where participants had to accept or decline different intensities of painful electric shocks in exchange of monetary rewards. METHODS: Participants (n = 90) were divided into three groups that were exposed to different distributions of monetary rewards. Monetary offers ranged linearly from $0 to $5 or $10 in groups 1

Narcissism, the Experience of Pain, and Risky Decision Making.

Personality characteristics and situational factors are known to influence performance on behavioral decision making tasks; however, variability exists in the relationship between narcissism and decision making. In addition, recent research suggests that the presence of acute pain can negatively affect decisions, and even the threat of pain can also cause changes in decision making. Narcissists are known to experience social pain differently than non-narcissists, but relatively little is known about how physical pain is experienced. The present study examined the influence of both pain and nar

Risk preferences and attitudes to surgery in decision making.

Background and purpose - There is increasing evidence that several commonly performed surgical procedures provide little advantage over nonoperative treatment, suggesting that doctors may sometimes be inappropriately optimistic about surgical benefit when suggesting treatment for individual patients. We investigated whether attitudes to risk influenced the choice of operative treatment and nonoperative treatment. Methods - 946 Swedish orthopedic surgeons were invited to participate in an online survey. A radiograph of a 4-fragment proximal humeral fracture was presented together with 5 differe

Effect of regulating anger and sadness on decision-making.

The aim of the current study was to investigate the effects of reappraisal, acceptance, and rumination for regulating anger and sadness on decision-making. Participants (N = 165) were asked to recall two autobiographical events in which they felt intense anger and sadness, respectively. Participants were then instructed to reappraise, accept, ruminate, or not use any strategies to regulate their feelings of anger and sadness. Following this manipulation, risk aversion, and decision-making strategies were measured using a computer-based measure of risk-taking and a simulated real-life decision-

The influence of family characteristics on perinatal decision making.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether parental characteristics affect estimates of best interests and intervention decisions for preterm infants. DESIGN AND METHODS: The study consisted of an anonymous questionnaire given to nurses, physicians, and students. The study included scenarios of 3 sets of parents, including a 16-year-old teenager, a couple who were lawyers, and a couple with a history of in vitro fertilization, about to deliver at 22 5/7 weeks, 24 weeks, or 27 5/7 weeks. Respondents were asked whether active intervention is in the infant's best interests and whether they would comply wit

Decision making in the management of hydroceles in infants and children.

UNLABELLED: The aim of this article was to establish a ground for evidence-based decision making in dealing with hydroceles, according to the age of the child and the presenting signs and symptoms. This prospective cohort study was conducted at Al-Kademyia Teaching Hospital in Baghdad, Iraq, during the period from December 2001 to December 2005. There were two groups of patients: group 1 involved 121 patients that presented with hydroceles at less than 1 year of age that were followed up to their first birthday to monitor the fate of hydroceles. Group 2 involved 140 patients, 1-12 years of age

Executive function and decision-making in women with fibromyalgia.

Patients with fibromyalgia (FM) typically report cognitive problems, and they state that these deficits are disturbing in everyday life. Despite these substantial subjective complaints by FM patients, very few studies have addressed objectively the effect of such aversive states on neuropsychological performance. In this study we aimed to examine possible impairment of executive function and decision-making in a sample of 36 women diagnosed with FM and 36 healthy women matched in age, education, and socio-economic status. We contrasted performance of both groups on two measures of executive fu

How well-run boards make decisions.

In the aftermath of seismic debacles like those that toppled Enron and WorldCom, corporate boards have been shaken up and made over. More directors are independent these days, for instance, and corporations now disclose directors' salaries and committee members' names. Research shows that most of the changes are having a positive effect on companies' performance. They are primarily structural, though, and don't go to the heart of a board's work: making the choices that shape a firm's future. Which decisions boards own and how those calls are made are largely hidden from the public. As a result

The effects of vagus nerve stimulation on decision-making.

Subcortical and brainstem structures are increasingly becoming recognized as important contributors to higher cognitive functioning. Decision-making is one such function, particularly as viewed within the framework of the somatic marker hypothesis (SMH). The SMH views the participation in decision-making by the body proper as integral to emotional biasing and hence key to choosing in an advantageous manner. This study focuses on the vagus nerves as a possible conduit for somatic afferent signals pertinent to decision-making. We tested eight epileptic patients with implanted left vagus nerve st

Laparoscopy as an adjunct to decision making in the 'acute abdomen'.

When patients are admitted to hospital with acute abdominal pain, clinicians, irrespective of a specific diagnosis, intuitively select three diagnostic classes: operation definitely required (Group A); operation definitely not required (Group B); need for operation uncertain (Group C). The last is followed either by a precautionary laparotomy or a variable period of observation/investigation. We have studied prospectively the influence of laparoscopy on the distribution between these classes and particularly on outcome in group C. One hundred and twenty-five consecutive patients with abdominal

Variables affecting the decision making of a review panel.

This study was designed to identify the variables that influence a review panel's decision to discharge or detain an involuntary patient. A group of fifty patients consecutively discharged by the review panel of a provincial mental hospital were compared according to thirty-five variables, with a group of forty-five patients consecutively detained by the panel. The variable set included information on the patient's psychiatric history, current hospitalization and treatment as well as ratings of dangerousness, insight and psychopathology, as reflected in the attending physician's case summary p

The Impact of Different Severities of Anxiety on Decision-Making.

PURPOSE: The effects of anxiety on the brain exist universally; however, little is known about how anxiety affects the functional connectivity of the cerebral cortex and various brain regions. We aimed to understand the relationship between levels of anxiety and decision-making. METHOD: In this study, 58 healthy adult students with an average age of 20 years were recruited. We then estimated their severity of anxiety by using the Self-Assessment Scale (SAS) for anxiety, grouping them into three severity groups according to their SAS results. Next, we performed a 24-point number crunching. Dur

Shared Decision Making in the Treatment of Rectal Cancer.

Background/Objectives: The management of locally advanced rectal cancer has evolved significantly, shaped by advances in multimodal neoadjuvant therapy and a growing emphasis on organ preservation through the watch-and-wait approach. These advancements, however, introduce complex treatment decisions that require careful consideration by both patients and clinicians. Methods: This narrative review explores the evolution of the management of locally advanced rectal cancer and the role of shared decision-making in guiding treatment decisions, particularly for patients facing decisions between sur

Suggestions for the decision making in subjective cognitive complaints.

In recent years, the increasing life expectancy has underscored the importance of cognitive health alongside physical well-being, particularly because healthy adults may report subjective cognitive complaints (SCC), often related to memory. These complaints may or may not align with objective cognitive impairments, fueling ongoing debates about whether SCC could serve as an early indicator of dementia. While some studies suggest SCC as a potential precursor to dementia, others propose that these complaints may merely co-occur with cognitive decline. Despite the lack of consensus, addressing SC
