Marginal Mandibulectomy and Oral Rehabilitation of Xeroderma Pigmentosum Patient.

Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) may cause tissue deformation in patients who have undergone oral cancer surgery requiring resection of any part of the mandible. Oral rehabilitation is a pivotal factor in the restoration of function and esthetics. The aim of this study was to report a clinical case of successful prosthetic rehabilitation of a 57-year-old woman who presented with marginal mandibulectomy and a significant reduction in maximal mouth opening after treatment for XP. With her reduced opening and considerable loss of structure and tissue, she had difficulty speaking, swallowing, and altere

The single midline implant in the edentulous mandible: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: The concept of a single midline implant retaining a complete mandibular denture is controversially discussed among experts. Studies are rare in the literature, and commonly accepted recommendations for this treatment options are not available. This systematic literature review was performed to give an overview over the current literature on the single midline implant therapy for the edentulous mandible and to reveal whether this treatment option might be an alternative to commonly accepted treatment modalities with more implants. METHODS: A review of the literature published until

Prosthodontic rehabilitation of patient with marginal mandibular resection using attachment supported prostheses: A clinical report.

Marginal mandibular resection to treat neoplasms leads to loss of alveolar bone and teeth at the affected side. Consequently patient suffers with poor masticatory performance and esthetic disfigurement, which we need to restore with the help of prosthodontic rehabilitation. The success of rehabilitation of these patients depends on strategic treatment planning and choice of most suitable treatment modality. In this article, case of a patient has been presented who underwent marginal mandibular resection and reported with many limiting factors like obliterated buccal and lingual sulci, attachme

An implant-retained maxillary overdenture to obturate a patent oronasal communication: a case report.

This is a case report of dental prosthetic treatment of a 72-year-old patient with cleft palate with a persisting oral nasal communication in the anterior hard palate. The remaining teeth were extracted, and dental implants were surgically placed in the maxilla and mandible to retain removable overdentures. The maxillary complete overdenture had full palatal coverage as opposed to partial coverage. It was retained by 5 implants with low-profile light retentive retainers. The mandibular overdenture was retained with 4 implants of different diameters and brands. Apparent parameters for successfu

Zygoma implant-supported prosthetic rehabilitation after partial maxillectomy using surgical navigation: a clinical report.

The rehabilitation of patients with acquired defects of the maxilla is a challenge in terms of reestablishing oronasal separation. In most patients these goals are met by means of prosthetic rehabilitation with an obturator prosthesis. If the remaining dentition does not offer sufficient retention and support, the placement of zygoma implants can enhance the stability of the prosthesis. Due to the anatomic intricacies of the zygomatic bone and the implant length, computer-supported navigated implant placement can be advantageous. In the following clinical report, a diabetic patient with a stat

Tooth-Supported Overdenture: Rediscovering What We Thought We Outgrew.

Edentulism results in impairment, functional limitations, and ultimately psychological and social disabilities. It is a significant factor in residual ridge resorption, leading to a decreased alveolar bone height and a reduced denture-bearing area. A tooth-supported overdenture (TSOD) represents one cost-effective treatment modality for patients requiring removable dentures and helps preserve tooth structure and proprioception, maintain alveolar bone to delay complete tooth loss, provide extra support and stability, and improve chewing efficiency. This case report describes the successful use

Contemporary "All-on-4" concept.

Restoration of the atrophic edentulous maxilla and mandible with implant retained prostheses has involved the use of axially placed implants in regions of the maxilla and mandible based on the adequate availability of bone, often using a staged surgical approaches. Anatomic limitations including pneumatized maxillary sinus, proximity of the inferior alveolar nerve and lack of available native bone have many clinicians performing traditional grafting procedure prior to implant placement. Utilization of the "All-on-4" concept has overcome these anatomic restrictions by allowing placement of 2 ve

The mandibular swing-lock complete denture for patients with microstomia.

Regardless of cause, the treatment of an edentulous patient with microstomia is difficult and often ingenious. Prosthodontic treatment modalities previously described are reviewed. A new type of prosthesis, the collapsible mandibular swing-lock complete denture, is introduced. The prosthesis incorporates a cast cobalt-chromium framework with a lingual hinge and a conventional labial swing-lock. This combination allows the prosthesis to be collapsible while maintaining structural durability. Advantages include ease of insertion and removal while providing maximum coverage for support, retention

[Dental rehabilitation in a young patient with glycogen storage disease type 1B].

A young woman, known to have glycogen storage disease type 1B (GSD1B) presents with severe periodontitis. GDS1B causes decreased hepatic and renal glucose production and in many cases neutropenia and neutrophil dysfunction leading to recurrent infections. It was decided to treat the patient by extraction of the most affected teeth and retention of the remaining teeth through periodontal treatment, both with antibiotic prophylaxis. After a follow-up period of 1.5 years, during which there was no visible improvement, it was decided to do a full dental extraction and fabricate complete dentures.

Retromolar ridge in edentulous patients: clinical considerations.

PURPOSE: A removable denture base should cover the mandibular retromolar regions to provide proper basal seal and denture function in edentulous patients. The bony residual ridge form, attached muscles, and covering mucosa provide support, stability, and retention of the planned prosthesis. There is insufficient information regarding bone anatomy, mucosal tissues, and muscles in the retromolar region after tooth loss. The purpose of this study was to examine the tissue morphology in the mandibular retromolar area of edentulous subjects and report on the clinical inferences in prosthetic and im

Influence of Retainer Design on Shear Bond Strength in Fixed Partial Dentures: An In Vitro Comparative Study.

BACKGROUND: Resin-bonded fixed dental prostheses (RBFDPs) are considered conservative alternatives to conventional fixed partial dentures for replacing missing teeth. However, concerns regarding retention and debonding remain, particularly in posterior regions. This study evaluated the influence of different retainer designs on the shear bond strength (SBS) of fixed partial dentures. METHODS: Fifteen monolithic zirconia fixed partial dentures were divided into three groups: conventional overlay-retained FPD (OVL), modified overlay-retained FPD (MOVL), and conventional full-coverage crown-reta

Survival and Complications of Single Dental Implants in the Edentulous Mandible Following Immediate or Delayed Loading: A Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial.

It was the aim of this 24-mo randomized controlled clinical trial to investigate whether the survival of a single median implant placed in the edentulous mandible to retain a complete denture is not compromised by immediate loading. Secondary outcomes were differences in prosthetic complications between the loading principles. Each of the 158 patients who received an implant was randomly assigned to the immediate loading group ( n = 81) or the delayed loading group ( n = 77). Recall visits were performed 1 mo after implant placement (for only the delayed loading group) and 1, 4, 12, and 24 mo

Oral rehabilitation considerations for partially edentulous periodontal patients.

Traditional tooth-supported and implant-supported fixed/removable restorations are currently used to replace teeth lost due to periodontal disease. This article reviews the existing literature for oral rehabilitation of partially edentulous periodontal patients with various designs of removable dental prosthesis (RDP), fixed dental prosthesis (FDP) and implant-supported single crown (SC), by addressing their (a) general features, (b) survival and complication rates, along with considerations for treatment planning in periodontal patients, and (c) preference by patients. To answer these issues,

Implant-supported prosthesis in a child with hereditary mandibular anodontia: the use of ball attachments.

This report describes the provision of an implant-supported hybrid overdenture in an 8-year-old child with mandibular anodontia. An interdisciplinary approach to treatment planning was employed. Two implant fixtures were placed in the canine regions and ball attachments connected to provide support and retention for the prosthesis. There was only one implant-related complication during the first follow-up year. Close follow-up during the child's growing years is essential for the maintenance of the peri-implant tissues and to replace the prosthesis as mandibular growth occurs.
