Magnesium lithospermate B and rosmarinic acid, two compounds present in Salvia miltiorrhiza, have potent antiviral activity against enterovirus 71 infections.

The aim of this study was to identify the active ingredients responsible for the anti-EV71 activity produced by Salvia miltiorrhiza extracts. A pGS-EV71 IRES-based bicistronic reporter assay platform was used for rapid analysis of compounds that could specifically inhibit EV71 viral IRES-mediated translation. The analysis identified 2 caffeic acid derivatives, magnesium lithospermate B (MLB) and rosmarinic acid (RA), which suppressed EV71 IRES-mediated translation at concentrations of 30μg/ml. We also found that MLB and RA inhibited EV71 infection when they were added to RD cells during the vi

Salvianolic acid B and its liposomal formulations: anti-hyperalgesic activity in the treatment of neuropathic pain.

Salvianolic acid B (SalB) represents the most characteristic constituent of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bge. with a strong free radicals scavenger activity. This property may be useful in the treatment of some severe chronic diseases, where there is an imbalance of reactive oxygen species formation and where intracellular reactive oxygen and nitrogen species level can cause severe cell damage and even cell death. In particular, SalB can protect against the oxidative stress as well as the antioxidant superoxide dismutase and reduced activity of glutathione, important determinants of neuropathological a

Salvianolic Acid B Protects Against Contrast-Induced Acute Kidney Injury by Attenuating Ferroptosis via the SIRT1/Nrf2 Pathway.

Contrast-induced acute kidney injury (CI-AKI) poses a significant clinical challenge and contributes to a considerable healthcare burden. Ferroptosis has been increasingly recognized as an important mechanism of renal tubular epithelial cell injury in CI-AKI. Salvianolic acid B (SalB), a natural compound with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, has shown protective effects in various kidney diseases. However, its role in CI-AKI-associated ferroptosis has not been fully clarified. In this study, we established a rat model of CI-AKI by subcutaneous injection of carbon tetrachloride for

The potential effect of salvianolic acid B against rat ischemic brain injury in combination with mesenchymal stem cells.

BACKGROUND: Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and Salvianolic acid B (SAB) are known to exert potent anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative properties. But the effect of SAB and MSCs combination treatment on the cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury (CI/RI) is not clear. METHODS: After the CI/RI animal model established, rats were administered with MSCs and SAB individually or combination treatment. To evaluate the therapeutic potential, behavioral tests, TTC staining, Hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining, and immunofluorescence assays were performed to evaluate the neuroprotection and endogenous neuroge

Involvement of the adenosine A1 receptor in the hypnotic effect of rosmarinic acid.

Insomnia, the most common sleep disorder, is characterized by a longer sleep latency, greater sleep fragmentation, and consequent excessive daytime fatigue. Due to the various side effects of prescribed hypnotics, demand for new drugs is still high. Recent studies have suggested the adenosine receptor (AR) as a potential therapeutic target for insomnia, however, clinically useful hypnotics targeting AR are not yet available. In the present study, we evaluated the hypnotic effect of rosmarinic acid, a phenolic compound widely found in medicinal plants, through pentobarbital-induced sleep test,

Rosmarinic acid ameliorated cardiac dysfunction and mitochondrial injury in diabetic cardiomyopathy mice via activation of the SIRT1/PGC-1α pathway.

Mitochondrial injury plays an essential role in the pathogenesis of diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM). Previous studies demonstrated that rosmarinic acid (RA) treatment prevented high glucose-induced mitochondrial injury in vitro. However, whether RA can ameliorate cardiac function by preventing mitochondrial injury in DCM is unknown. The SIRT1/PGC-1α pathway has emerged as an important regulator of metabolic control and other mitochondrial functions. The present study was undertaken to determine the effects of RA on mitochondrial and cardiac function in DCM as well as the involvement of the SIRT1

Rosmarinic Acid Ameliorates H2O2-Induced Oxidative Stress in L02 Cells Through MAPK and Nrf2 Pathways.

Liver cells are easily damaged by oxidative stress during progression both in liver development and throughout adult life, resulting in tissue pathology that ranges from simple hepatitis to nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. In this study, we determined the attenuation of oxidative stress in liver cells with pretreatment of rosmarinic acid (RA), which is an antioxidant agent from Rosmarinus officinalis. The human liver cell line L02 was damaged by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). In the RA treatment group, the viability of L02 cells increased and the intracellular reactive oxygen species levels decrea

Novel anti-infective potential of salvianolic acid B against human serious pathogen Neisseria meningitidis.

BACKGROUND: Epidemics of meningococcal meningitis cause significant health problems especially in Sub-Saharan Africa. Novel anti-infective candidates are needed. In modern anti-adhesion therapy initial attachment of bacteria to host cells is prevented. Our unique studies have revealed anti-adhesive candidates from natural products, namely milk and berries, against Neisseria meningitidis adhesion. In the present study against N. meningitidis adhesion, a novel binding inhibitor was found; salvianolic acid B (SA-B), a polyphenol from the radix Salviae miltiorrhizae, an important part of Chinese f

Inhibition of MDM2 expression by rosmarinic acid in TSLP-stimulated mast cell.

Rosmarinic acid (RA) has an anti-inflammatory property while thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP) has an important role in mast cell-mediated inflammatory responses. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine the regulatory effect of RA in TSLP-stimulated human mast cell line, HMC-1 cells, and short ragweed pollen-induced allergic conjunctivitis mouse model. As a result, we found that RA significantly decreased the TSLP-induced mast cell proliferation and murine double minute (MDM) 2 expression. RA significantly decreased the levels of interleukin (IL)-13 and phosphorylated the signal transdu

Intranasal rosmarinic acid reduces cognitive and hippocampal damage from repeated neonatal isoflurane exposure by regulating apoptotic/oxidative/inflammatory responses, and heat-shock and 14-3-3 proteins.

Repeated or prolonged exposure to general anesthetics like isoflurane (ISO) during neurodevelopment can lead to long-term neurocognitive and behavioral deficits, particularly because pediatric brains lack adequate antioxidant defenses, and no preventive therapies currently exist. Rosmarinic acid (RA), a polyphenolic compound with antioxidant and neuroprotective properties, has not yet been evaluated for mitigating ISO-induced toxicity. In this study, Wistar albino rat pups were exposed to ISO (1.5% in 30% oxygen/air, 3-h) on postnatal days (P)7 +P9 + P11, and the protective effects of intranas

Tanshinone IIA, salvianic acid A, salvianolic acid B, and hydroxysafflor yellow A reduce cerebral injury via TGF-β1/Smad3 pathway.

Cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury (CIRI) is a cerebrovascular disorder with high rates of incidence, disability, and death. It has been identified that Salvia miltiorrhiza and safflower have a protective effect in CIRI. However, the synergistic mechanisms of their multiple active components remain to be elucidated. In this study, we investigated the protective mechanisms of the combination of Tanshinone IIA, salvianic acid A, salvianolic acid B, and hydroxy safflower yellow A in CIRI, based on the TGF-β1/Smad3 signaling pathway. Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were used to establish the rat middle

A temporally functional composite hydrogel scaffold for cranial defect repair via sequential modulation of angiogenesis and osteogenesis.

The repair of large cranial defects remains a major clinical challenge, as conventional materials primarily act as inert fillers and fail to meet the complex biological requirements of cranial bone regeneration. In particular, they lack the ability to temporally coordinate angiogenesis and osteogenesis. This study aimed to develop a temporally functional composite scaffold to dynamically modulate the regenerative microenvironment and promote sequential vascularized bone regeneration. Methods: A silk fibroin-based hydrogel system was designed, incorporating salvianolic acid B (SalB)-loaded sust
