Repetitive sensory motor behaviors are a direct target for clinical treatment and a potential treatment endpoint for individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities. By removing the burden associated with video annotation or direct observation, automated detection of stereotypy would allow for longer term monitoring in ecologic settings. We report automated detection of common stereotypical motor movements using commercially available accelerometers affixed to the body and a generalizable detection algorithm. The method achieved a sensitivity of 80% for body rocking and 93% for han

Among children diagnosed with developmental delays, difficulties in self-regulation are prominent and have been linked to school readiness problems. The current study sought to examine the impact of the Kids in Transition to School (KITS) school readiness intervention program on self-regulation, with a specific focus on response monitoring skills, among children with developmental delays. Children (n = 20 in the KITS group and n = 21 in a services as usual group) were administered a flanker task during which event-related potential data were collected to examine group differences in response m

When working with individuals with little or no functional speech, clinicians often recommend that communication partners use the client's augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) device when speaking to the client. This is broadly known as "augmented input" and is thought to enhance the client's learning of language form and content. The purpose of this systematic review was to determine the effects of augmented input on communication outcomes in persons with developmental disabilities and persons with childhood apraxia of speech who use aided AAC. Nineteen studies met the inclusion c

This study uses a body motion interactive game developed in Scratch 2.0 to enhance the body strength of children with disabilities. Scratch 2.0, using an augmented-reality function on a program platform, creates real world and virtual reality displays at the same time. This study uses a webcam integration that tracks movements and allows participants to interact physically with the project, to enhance the motivation of children with developmental disabilities to perform physical activities. This study follows a single-case research using an ABAB structure, in which A is the baseline and B is t

The aim of this study was to determine the body composition and resting metabolic rate (RMR) of girls with Rett syndrome (RS) (n=15) and to compare them with an equally handicapped group of girls with developmental disabilities (DD) (n=13). Body composition was measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis and RMR - the amount of energy expended while at rest - by indirect calorimetry. Weight, height, body mass index (BMI), BMI percentiles and food intake were all measured and calculated by standardized procedures. Feeding time, ambulatory status and ability to self-feed were also assessed.

Positron emission tomography (PET) is a technique that enables imaging of the distribution of radiolabeled tracers designed to track biochemical and molecular processes in the body after intravenous injection or inhalation. New strategies for the use of radiolabeled tracers hold potential for imaging gene expression in the brain during development and following interventions. In addition, PET may be key in identifying the physiological consequences of gene mutations associated with mental retardation. The development of high spatial resolution microPET scanners for imaging of rodents provides

BACKGROUND: Genome sequencing (GS) has recently been considered as a first-tier diagnostic tool for individuals with intellectual disability (ID) and developmental delay (DD). In this study, we assess the diagnostic yield of GS for a large cohort of children with ID/DD and describe variants contributing to genetic diagnoses in this cohort.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of consecutive GS results for individuals under 18 years of age with a clinical indication of ID/DD was conducted using data from a clinical diagnostic laboratory. The present analysis included 666 individuals.
RESULTS: In

BACKGROUND: Global developmental delay or intellectual disability usually accompanies various genetic disorders as a part of the syndrome, which may include seizures, autism spectrum disorder and multiple congenital abnormalities. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) techniques have improved the identification of pathogenic variants and genes related to developmental delay. This study aimed to evaluate the yield of whole exome sequencing (WES) and neurodevelopmental disorder gene panel sequencing in a pediatric cohort from Ukraine. Additionally, the study computationally predicted the effect of va

SRSF1 (also known as ASF/SF2) is a non-small nuclear ribonucleoprotein (non-snRNP) that belongs to the arginine/serine (R/S) domain family. It recognizes and binds to mRNA, regulating both constitutive and alternative splicing. The complete loss of this proto-oncogene in mice is embryonically lethal. Through international data sharing, we identified 17 individuals (10 females and 7 males) with a neurodevelopmental disorder (NDD) with heterozygous germline SRSF1 variants, mostly de novo, including three frameshift variants, three nonsense variants, seven missense variants, and two microdeletion

BACKGROUND: Angelman syndrome (AS) is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder and is characterized by severe cognitive disability, motor dysfunction, speech impairment, hyperactivity, and frequent seizures. Although the maternal chromosomal region 15q11.2-q13 deletion is the most common mechanism of AS, ~10% of individuals with AS are caused by the intragenic variants in the maternally inherited UBE3A, which encodes an E3 ubiquitin ligase.
METHODS: Clinical diagnoses were based on detailed clinical findings. Trio-based exome sequencing was performed on the proband and her parents to identify the u

OBJECTIVES: Developmental disability children have differences in growth. Therefore, tube size selection is important for nasotracheal intubation. In our previous study for healthy children undergoing dental surgery, height was the most suitable factor to predict nasotracheal tube size. The aim of this study was to find the most suitable formula for selection of nasotracheal tube size for them, retrospectively.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Developmental disability children aged 2 to 10 years were included in this study. They were intubated nasotracheally from April 2012 until May 2017. Their actuall

Human immunodeficiency virus type I enhancer binding protein 2 (HIVEP2) has been previously associated with intellectual disability and developmental delay in three patients. Here, we describe six patients with developmental delay, intellectual disability, and dysmorphic features with de novo likely gene-damaging variants in HIVEP2 identified by whole-exome sequencing (WES). HIVEP2 encodes a large transcription factor that regulates various neurodevelopmental pathways. Our findings provide further evidence that pathogenic variants in HIVEP2 lead to intellectual disabilities and developmental d

Global developmental delay (GDD) and intellectual disability (ID) occur in up to 3% of the general population and are even more commonly encountered in the setting of the pediatric neurology clinic. New advances in technology and in the understanding of genetic disorders have led to changes in the diagnostic approach to a child with unexplained GDD or ID. Chromosomal microarray has become a first-line test for evaluation of patients in this population and has both significantly increased diagnostic yield and introduced new challenges in the interpretation of copy number variants of uncertain s
