During the excavations undertaken in 2018 at the Nueva Biblioteca sector of the Valencina Copper Age mega-site, in south-west Spain, an exceptional sperm-whale tooth was found inside a non-burial pit. A series of 181 amputations in 156 patients treated between 1985 and 1996 because of chronic peripheral vascular disease was reviewed. 107 major amputations (above- and below-knee) and 74 minor amputations (foot and forefoot) were performed. 81% of the patient population had previous vascular operations. Thirty-five cases of neurogenic sciatic nerve tumors are described. Pain is the major clinical manifestation but may give rise to diagnostic confusion because of its often prominent site far distant from the neoplasm. Five consecutive patients with wound and/or plastic surgical flap failure after hip disarticulation or amputation at the lesser trochanteric transfemoral level were treated with local tissue debridement, open wound management, culture-specific antibiotic therapy, and nutritional supplementation. Since 1976 we attempted to avoid an above-knee (AK) amputation in favor of a knee disarticulation. Amputation at the level of the ankle joint is a valuable, yet underused procedure for a variety of conditions affecting the foot and ankle. The procedure can provide a comfortable and durable stump that allows a lower extremity amputee to function with minimal disability. The indications, surgical technique, and postoperative prosthetic considerations are reviewed and discussed. Phantom limb pain is a frequent sequela of amputation. A high prevalence of residual limb pain and back pain also exists among amputees. We present a case of a new-onset severe phantom limb pain resulting from a metastatic spinal mass in an 81-year-old patient with a history of malignant sarcoma and an old hip disarticulation amputation. The detection of distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) depends on the viability of the ear's conduction apparatus. However, tympanic membrane perforations and other conductive disorders have not been fully investigated with regard to the examination of DPOAEs. Emergency amputation in the critically ill is associated with 17 to 25% mortality, and a high rate of postoperative infection. Mortality arid morbidity can be reduced by freezing the diseased tissues with dry ice, and deferring surgery until the patient is rendered stable, and metabolically able to heal. Combat-related blast injuries often cause devastating extremity trauma.
