Comparison of soft-tissue profiles in Le Fort I osteotomy patients with Dolphin and Maxilim softwares.

INTRODUCTION: To correct dentofacial deformities, a combination of orthodontic treatment and orthognathic surgery is needed. Prediction software packages are beneficial in treatment planning and achieving improved outcomes, but before using any software, its reliability and reproducibility must be assessed. The aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of 2-dimensional Dolphin (version 10; Dolphin Imaging & Management Solutions, Chatsworth, Calif) and 3-dimensional Maxilim (Medicim, Sint-Niklaas, Belgium) softwares in predicting the soft-tissue profiles of patients who had Le Fort I osteo

The presence of Brucella ceti ST26 in a striped dolphin (Stenella coeruleoalba) with meningoencephalitis from the Mediterranean Sea.

Brucella spp. was isolated from brain, lung and intestinal lymph nodes of a dead adult male striped dolphin (Stenella coeruleoalba) found stranded on the Tyrrhenian coast (Tuscany, Italy) of the Mediterranean Sea in February 2012. Brucella spp. was associated with moderate to severe lesions of meningoencephalitis. A co-infection by Toxoplasma gondii was also demonstrated at brain level by means of molecular and histopathologic methods. The Brucella isolate was further characterized based on a fragment-specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) approach, consisting of a set of five specific PCRs,

Isolation and characterization of the first American bottlenose dolphin papillomavirus: Tursiops truncatus papillomavirus type 2.

A novel papillomavirus (PV) was isolated from a genital condyloma of a free-ranging bottlenose dolphin inhabiting the coastal waters of Charleston Harbor, SC, USA: Tursiops truncatus papillomavirus type 2 (TtPV2). This novel virus represents the first isolated North American cetacean PV and the first American bottlenose dolphin PV. After the viral genome was cloned, sequenced and characterized genetically, phylogenetic analyses revealed that TtPV2 is most similar to the only published cetacean PV isolated and characterized thus far, Phocoena spinipinnis PV type 1 (PsPV1). A striking feature of

Induction of cross-protection in mice against dolphin Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae isolates with a swine commercial vaccine.

Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is well known to cause disease in dolphins. This disease occurs either in an peracute way, leading to mortality even before clinical signs are observed or in a sub-acute way, characterized by rhomboidal skin lesions, that can be treated with penicillin or its derivatives. Commercial swine vaccines, containing inactivated serotype 2 strains, are currently used for vaccination but it is not known whether these vaccines induce protection against E. rhusiopathiae isolates from dolphins. In the present study, it was demonstrated in a mouse model that vaccination with a

A possible case of Lôbo's disease acquired in Europe from a bottle-nosed dolphin (Tursiops truncatus).

A granuloma of the skin of one hand, accompanied by supratrochlear lymphadenitis, became evident about 3 months after the patient, an aquarium attendant, had had occupational contact, in Europe, with a bottle-nosed dolphin (Tursiops truncatus). The dolphin, when caught in the Bay of Biscay, had granulomas of the skin: yeast-like organisms, morphologically indistinguishable from Loboa loboi, were found in a biopsy specimen. Identical organisms were present in the attendant's skin lesion and supratrochlear lymph node.

Broad permissiveness of mammalian nectin-4 orthologs for morbilliviruses: a notable exception in dolphin nectin-4.

Morbilliviruses utilize signalling lymphocytic activation molecule (SLAM) and nectin-4 as their major cellular receptors and exhibit distinct host specificities despite sharing common receptor usage. While species-specific differences in SLAM have been extensively investigated, the contribution of nectin-4 to morbillivirus host range remains poorly understood because nectin-4 is highly conserved among mammals. Here, we systematically compared the receptor activities of nectin-4 orthologs from human, dolphin, bat, dog and seal for representative morbilliviruses, including measles virus (MV), ce

Chronic entanglement and fatal septicaemia in a juvenile bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus): animal welfare implications.

Case history: A juvenile bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) was first observed among a group of approximately 12 dolphins on 10 December 2024, repeatedly breaching off Riverhead, Auckland, New Zealand. On subsequent observations, material consistent with fishing debris was seen entangled around the dorsal fin and tail flukes. While most conspecifics departed the area, a larger dolphin remained in close association with the entangled individual. The pair remained within the local area for at least 29 days prior to human intervention efforts to disentangle the animal. During the interim per

Applying statistical parametric mapping regression to identify key kinematic characteristics of underwater dolphin kicking.

The purpose of this study was to systematically explore the key kinematic factors influencing swimming velocity during the underwater dolphin kick (UDK) using statistical parametric mapping regression. Twenty-one university swimmers (16 males and 5 females) had a personal best within 20% of the world record. This study adopted a quantitative cross-sectional experimental design to identify phase-specific relationships between kinematic variables and swimming velocity during UDK. Their performances were recorded and analysed using two-dimensional (2D) video analysis. Twenty-one regression models

Head-related transfer function predictions reveal dominant sound propagation mechanisms to the dolphin ears.

Toothed whales possess specialized anatomical structures in the head, including thin, excavated lower mandible embedded in mandibular fat bodies (MFBs), complex skull morphology fused with the upper jaw, and extensive air spaces surrounding the middle ears and beneath the skull. In this study, finite element modeling is used to investigate how these structures influence the transmission of water-borne sounds to the ears. The models are based on volumetric representations derived from computed tomography scans of a live bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus). The anatomical structures included

First report of three different parasite species in two dolphin species stranded on the coast of Portugal.

Understanding the dynamics of the interaction of marine parasites with their hosts, especially in terms of diversity, distribution and pathogenicity can be of great importance in a Global Change era. Monitoring the parasite diversity of marine mammals holds not only ecological importance but also can be of significance for public health. However, there is a scarcity of parasitological research on cetaceans in the eastern Atlantic Ocean, namely in Portugal. Here we explore the morphology, diversity and pathogenicity of parasites in two different cetaceans, Delphinus delphis (common dolphin) and

First report of Toxoplasma gondii naturally infecting free-living Franciscana Dolphin (Pontoporia blainvillei).

Toxoplasma gondii is a globally distributed protozoan capable of infecting marine animals. This study reports the first isolation of T. gondii in Pontoporia blainvillei (Franciscana dolphin), found post-mortem in Laguna, southern coast of Santa Catarina, Brazil. Necropsy was performed on a juvenile female, and pooled tissue samples (heart, lungs, brain, liver) were digested and bioassayed in mice. All three mice died within 21 days post-inoculation. Serological testing by indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) detected antibodies against T. gondii in two mice, with titers of 1:64 and 1:256. T

Characterising injuries and pathologies of common dolphin Delphinus delphis mortalities in the South Australian Sardine Fishery.

Mortality of dolphins in fishing operations is often under-estimated, as shown by studies of beach-washed carcasses. Linking evidence obtained during necropsies with fishing method is fundamental to understanding the extent of mortality and the manner in which animals die. The South Australian Sardine Fishery (SASF) has operated a purse-seine industry since 1991. This study characterised injuries, pathological changes and life history of 49 dead dolphins collected from SASF during 2006-2019. Histology examination was conducted on 25 animals. Neonates, calves and juveniles accounted for 63% of

Multimodal Assessment of Bottlenose Dolphin Auditory Nuclei Using 7-Tesla MRI, Immunohistochemistry and Stereology.

The importance of assessing neurochemical processes in the cetacean brain as a tool for monitoring their cognitive health and to indirectly model human neurodegenerative conditions is increasingly evident, although available data are largely semiquantitative. High-resolution MRI for post-mortem brains and stereology allow for quantitative assessments of the cetacean brain. In this study, we scanned two brains of bottlenose dolphins in a 7-Tesla (7T) MR scanner and assessed the connectivity of the inferior colliculi and ventral cochlear nuclei using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). Serial thick

Potential biases in dietary interpretation derived from stable isotope analysis of small dolphin teeth.

We analyzed δ13C and δ15N values in different tooth portions (Growth Layer Groups, GLGs) of franciscanas, Pontoporia blainvillei, to investigate their effect on whole tooth (WT) isotopic values and the implications for dietary estimates. Tooth portions included the dentin deposited during the prenatal development (PND), the first year of life (GLG1) deposited during the nursing period and the central part of the tooth with no distinction amongst subsequent GLGs (Center). Isotopic mixing models estimating the contribution of PND, GLG1 and Center to WT showed that GLG1 has a strong effect on WT

Novel cetacean morbillivirus in a rare Fraser's dolphin (Lagenodelphis hosei) stranding from Maui, Hawai'i.

Cetacean morbillivirus (CeMV) is a global threat to cetaceans. We report a novel morbillivirus from a Fraser's dolphin (Lagenodelphis hosei) that stranded in Maui, Hawaii in 2018 that is dissimilar to the beaked whale morbillivirus previously identified from Hawaii and to other CeMV strains. Histopathological findings included intranuclear inclusions in bile duct epithelium, lymphoid depletion, rare syncytial cells and non-suppurative meningitis. Cerebellum and lung tissue homogenates were inoculated onto Vero.DogSLAMtag cells for virus isolation and cytopathic effects were observed, resulting

Ultrasonographic findings associated with normal pregnancy and fetal well-being in the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus).

Reproductive success is vital in sustaining free-ranging and managed bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) populations. Ultrasonography is an invaluable, non-invasive tool in assessing the fetomaternal unit in humans and animals, including dolphins and horses. The purpose of this prospective longitudinal cohort study was to develop a protocol for fetomaternal ultrasonographic monitoring in dolphins and to report normal measurements and descriptive findings correlated with a positive outcome. From 2010 to 2017, serial ultrasonographic evaluations of 12 healthy dolphins were performed over the

Health Impacts and Recovery From Prolonged Freshwater Exposure in a Common Bottlenose Dolphin (Tursiops truncatus).

Common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) exposed to freshwater or low salinity (<10 practical salinity units; PSU) for prolonged periods of time have been documented to develop skin lesions, corneal edema and electrolyte abnormalities, and in some instances they have died. Here we review a case of an out-of-habitat subadult, female common bottlenose dolphin that remained in a freshwater lake in Seminole, Alabama for at least 32 days. Due to concerns for the dolphin's health a rescue was initiated. At the time of rescue bloodwork results indicated minor electrolyte abnormalities (hyponat

PHYLOGENETIC ANALYSIS OF THE GENOME OF AN ENTERITIS-ASSOCIATED BOTTLENOSE DOLPHIN MASTADENOVIRUS SUPPORTS A CLADE INFECTING THE CETARTIODACTYLA.

:  Adenoviruses are nonenveloped, double-stranded DNA viruses, known to infect members of all tetrapod classes, with a similarity between phylogenies of hosts and viruses observed. We characterized bottlenose dolphin adenovirus 2 (BdAdV-2) found in a bottlenose dolphin ( Tursiops truncatus) with enteritis. Virions were seen by negative staining electron microscopy of feces. Initial sequences obtained using conserved PCR primers were expanded using primer walking techniques, and the complete coding sequence was obtained. Phylogenetic analyses were consistent with coevolution of this virus and i

Piroxicam and doxycycline treatment for an oral squamous cell carcinoma in an inshore bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops aduncus).

BACKGROUND: The virus family Papillomaviridae has been documented in a wide range of animal species and can cause benign and malignant proliferative lesions. The presence of concurrent lingual papillomas and squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) in cetaceans has also been documented in both wild and captive populations, suggesting malignant transformation of benign papilloma to SCC may occur in this species. CASE REPORT: In 2008, a 38-year-old captive male inshore bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops aduncus) was diagnosed with papillomatous lesions on the intermandibular frenulum rostral to the tongue and
