Binge drinking impairs vascular function in young adults.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to assess whether young binge drinkers (BD) have impaired macrovascular and microvascular function and cardiovascular disease risk factors compared with age-matched alcohol abstainers (A). BACKGROUND: Binge drinking rates are highest on college campuses and among those age 18 to 25 years; however, macrovascular and microvascular endothelial function in young adults with histories of repeated binge drinking (≥ 5 standard drinks in 2 h in men, ≥ 4 standard drinks in 2 h in women) has not been investigated. METHODS: Cardiovascular profiles, brachial artery

Parental problem drinking, parenting, and adolescent alcohol use.

The present study examined whether parental problem drinking affected parenting (i.e., behavioral control, support, rule-setting, alcohol-specific behavioral control), and whether parental problem drinking and parenting affected subsequent adolescent alcohol use over time. A total of 428 families, consisting of both parents and two adolescents (mean age 13.4 and 15.2 years at Time 1) participated in a three-wave longitudinal study with annual waves. A series of path analyses were conducted using a structural equation modeling program (Mplus). Results demonstrated that, unexpectedly, parental p

Alcohol drinking in MCH receptor-1-deficient mice.

BACKGROUND: Recently, we demonstrated that exogenous melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH) increases alcohol drinking in rats when administered into the brain. However, because the physiological relevance of this finding is unclear, we tested the hypothesis that endogenous MCH signaling enhances alcohol consumption. METHODS: Alcohol intake was assessed in male and female wildtype (WT), heterozygous (HET), and homozygous MCH receptor-1-deficient (KO) mice. Mice were given 24-hour access to a series of alcohol-containing solutions. Following this, the mice were given limited (1-hour) access to 10

Naltrexone improves outcome of a controlled drinking program.

Naltrexone is widely used in therapeutic programs with abstinence as a goal. However, it has been used in only a few studies aimed at reducing alcohol consumption. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of naltrexone as an adjunct in controlled drinking programs. This was an open randomized study of 12 weeks duration that compared two therapeutic strategies: use of naltrexone in a controlled drinking program (NTX+CD) and the controlled drinking program alone (CD), without NTX. Each group comprised 30 male patients with mild alcohol dependence. During treatment, there were no di

Drinking in snakes: kinematic cycling and water transport.

Snakes are purported to drink by sucking water into their mouths and then compressing the oral cavity to force water into the oesophagus. Video recordings of drinking behaviour in 23 snakes representing 14 species from three families, combined with simultaneous recordings of water volumes consumed, show that all the snakes vary widely in the amount of water taken in when drinking. This variation is not correlated with kinematic events. Kinematic recordings and indirect measurements of water flow suggest that moving water into the mouth can be decoupled from the processes that move water into t

Habit control expectancy for drinking, smoking, and eating.

Habit-specific locus of control measures for drinking, smoking, and eating were compared to Rotter's general measure to evaluate the relationship between cognitive expectancy and substance use. For both smoking and eating, individuals who reported being addicted were significantly more external on the habit-specific expectancy measures. Measures of use, tolerance, and risk covaried more closely with the habit-specific scales than with the general scale. For eating behavior, the habit-specific scale and the compulsive eating measure were different only for individuals with a history of being ov

[Does chronic alcohol drinking modify digestive gastrobiliary motility?].

In 23 chronic alcoholics and 23 controls gastric emptying, antral motility, fasting gallbladder volume and gallbladder emptying after a standardized, liquid fatty meal were investigated ultrasonically in order to assess the effect of chronic alcoholism on postprandial gastrobiliary motility. Only a subgroup of the alcoholics with signs of autonomic cardiovascular neuropathy (21.7%) exhibited a significant antral hypomotility and a tendency towards higher fasting gallbladder volumes. No significant differences between the study groups could be obtained for the other parameters. The duration and

Young adult drinking-driving: behavioral and psychosocial correlates.

Behavioral and psychosocial correlates of drinking and driving were examined in two independent samples of licensed drivers aged 18 to 25 selected from the Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles database. Mail questionnaires were returned by 2,300 young adults (1,196 in Sample 1; 1,104 in Sample 2). Structural equation modeling was used to examine the relation of a latent-variable measure of drinking-driving to latent-variable measures of other driving behaviors, problem behaviors and psychosocial variables. Drinking-driving, drug-driving and risky driving were found to comprise a more general, s

Cardiac teratogenesis of halogenated hydrocarbon-contaminated drinking water.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that administration of trichloroethylene and dichloroethylene to pregnant rats during organogenesis would produce a significant fetal cardiac teratogenic effect. It was also hypothesized that administration of these compounds only before pregnancy would not be associated with fetal cardiac teratogenesis. BACKGROUND: Epidemiologic observations demonstrated an increased number of congenital cardiac defects in children whose mother resided in an area with drinking water contaminated by trichloroethylene and dichloroethylene. Partial defluoridation of drinking water using fluorapatite precipitation.

Ion adsorption and ion exchange are two methods commonly used in small home units to treat drinking water to bring the fluoride concentration to within acceptable limits. However, the necessary flowthrough system is often difficult to arrange where there is no piped supply and gradual exhaustion of the active agent is not easily detected. In an attempt to overcome these problems a defluoridation method based on the precipitation of a sparingly soluble fluoride salt, fluorapatite, has been studied. Samples of simulated high-fluoride drinking waters, approximately 10 ppm F, were saturated with b

Cigarette smoking, tea and coffee drinking, and subfecundity.

A population-based survey of life-style factors and subfecundity (prolonged time to pregnancy) was conducted between 1984 and 1987 in two cities in Denmark. Altogether, 11,888 women filled out a questionnaire in the last trimester of pregnancy (an 86 percent response rate). After exclusion of women who had been treated for infertility or who did not respond to the question on infertility, 10,886 subjects remained. Among nonsmokers, no association was found between subfecundity (defined as a waiting time of 1 year or more from cessation of contraception to achievement of pregnancy) and consumpt

[Risk of high copper content in drinking water].

Copper occurs in small amounts in certain food items, but toxic exposures in Northern Europe have occurred only in connection with contaminated drinking water. Chronic exposure of small children can result in development of Indian Childhood Cirrhosis. This disease has recently been documented in Germany as a result of drinking water contaminated from corrosion of water pipes made of copper. Continued diarrhoea in small children can also be due to high copper exposure. Copper is not routinely determined in drinking water in Denmark. Further, no central registration is available concerning water

Effects of botulism on ducks drinking saline water.

Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) ducklings (2 wk old) were given water from natural saline wetlands or fresh water as drinking water for 1 or 2 wk prior to, and after, receiving material containing Clostridium botulinum type C toxin. Water with conductivity ranging from 3,460 to 6,690 mu mhos/cm had no detectable effect on the occurrence or severity of clinical signs of botulism. Ducks drinking water with conductivity of 7,130 mu mhos/cm for 1 wk prior to receiving toxin had more severe clinical signs and greater mortality than did birds drinking fresh water. Ducks given the same water for 2 wk pr

Cyanamide injections during alcohol deprivation increase alcohol drinking.

Long-Evans male rats were given 7 weeks of choice between 10% ethanol and water and then were divided into 6 matched groups, 3 of which were then deprived of alcohol for 6 days. Subcutaneous cyanamide injections (10 mg/kg, 3 times daily, for 4 days) during alcohol deprivation produced a long lasting, significant increase in subsequent alcohol selection, over and above the increase produced by alcohol deprivation alone. The same injections given to a group not deprived of alcohol caused a significant suppression of alcohol drinking during the treatment and had disappeared 4 days after the last

Ultrastructure of human placenta: effects of maternal drinking.

Previous investigations employing both animal models and human subjects have already documented that maternal alcohol consumption during pregnancy has definite deleterious effects upon the developing fetus. In these earlier studies, however, only gross morphological assessments were used to determine the toxicity of alcohol upon placenta and fetus. To date, there is nothing in the literature regarding the effects of alcohol upon the ultrastructure of the placenta. In our laboratory, using both scanning and transmission electron microscopy, placental specimens from mothers who drank heavily dur
