Objectives: In this study, we characterized alcohol use behaviors by sex among sheltered homeless adults and explored associations with health and readiness to change drinking behaviors. Methods: Participants (N = 581; 63.7% men; Mage = 43.6, 29.4% white) self-reported alcohol use and readiness to change drinking behaviors. Sex differences were analyzed via Wilcoxon ranksum, chi-square tests, logistic regression, and ANCOVAs. Results: Overall, 38.5% of the sample met criteria for current at-risk drinking, 39.7% self-reported a history of alcohol problems, and 22.9% reported having a formal alc

The dopamine agonist, apomorphine, or its antagonist, haloperidol, was administered to rats whose drinking was induced by fixed-interval schedules of pellet delivery or by water deprivation. The first study revealed that both drugs produced dose-dependent decreases in bar-pressing and schedule-induced polydipsia (SIP). At higher doses, haloperidol also depressed the rate of pellet delivery. The second study demonstrated that the suppression in SIP obtained in the first study was primarily due to the direct effect of the drugs and not to changes they produced on the underlying food reinforcemen

BACKGROUND: Unhealthy alcohol consumption is a severe public health problem. But low to moderate alcohol consumption is associated with high subjective well-being, possibly because alcohol is commonly consumed socially together with friends, who often are important for subjective well-being. Disentangling the health and social complexities of alcohol behavior has been difficult using traditional rating scales with cross-section designs. We aim to better understand these complexities by examining individuals' everyday affective subjective well-being language, in addition to rating scales, and v

BACKGROUND: Binge drinking, which is linked to various immediate and long-term negative outcomes, is highly prevalent among US college students. Behavioral interventions delivered via mobile phones have a strong potential to help decrease the hazardous effects of binge drinking by promoting safer drinking behaviors.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the preliminary efficacy of bhoos, a novel smartphone app designed to promote safer drinking behaviors among US college students. The app offers on-demand educational content about safer alcohol use, provides dynamic feedback as users log the

Dipyrone (metamizole), a powerful drug, is widely used as an analgesic and antipyretic; however, the safety of its use during lactation and the potential impact on the offspring are not well established. This study aimed to determine the effect of maternal dipyrone treatment during lactation on offspring development and emotional behavior and on the dam's maternal behavior. Hence, on postnatal day (PND) 2, drinking water only or drinking water containing dipyrone at doses of 100, 300, and 500mg/kg/day, were offered to lactating mothers up to PND9. Thereafter, all mice were provided regular dri

Three hundred three adults (57% male, average age 42 years) with severe and persistent mental illness receiving treatment at community mental health clinics completed a survey, which included B. C. Leigh's (1990) sex-related alcohol expectancy scale and measures of alcohol use and sexual risk behavior. Hierarchical logistic regression analyses, controlling for drinking behavior, revealed that participants with stronger expectancies that drinking would lead to enhanced sexual experience were more likely to have drank prior to intercourse and that, among participants who drank prior to intercour

Animal studies have suggested the involvement of the adrenergic system in drinking behavior. The present study investigated the involvement of the alpha2-adrenergic system in the polydipsia of patients with chronic schizophrenia by use of an alpha2 agonist and an antagonist. Four patients with schizophrenic disorders accompanied by intermittent hyponatremia and polydipsia were the subjects of, and completed, this study. Drinking behavior was assessed by calculating the percent of maximum weight gain [PMWG: (maximum diurnal weight - standard weight) x 100/standard weight]. Standard weight was d

BACKGROUND: Alcohol-related media exposure is strongly associated with adolescents' psychosocial factors, but the mechanisms underlying drinking intention and potential sex differences remain unclear.
OBJECTIVES: This cross-sectional study examined the associations between alcohol-related media exposure and rural Thai adolescents' drinking intention, focusing on psychosocial mediators-perceived drinking norms, attitudes, and perceived behavioral control-and the moderating role of biological sex.
METHODS: A total of 474 rural Thai adolescents (mean [±SD] age: 14.54 ± 0.92; 50.63% male) from 8

BACKGROUND: Binge drinking is associated with risky sexual behaviors and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Few studies have investigated this by gender or in an STD clinic. This cross-sectional study examined the association between binge drinking and risky sexual behaviors/STDs among patients attending an urban STD clinic.
METHOD: A total of 671 STD clinic patients were tested for STDs, and queried about recent alcohol/drug use and risky sexual behaviors using audio computer-assisted-self-interview. The association between binge drinking and sexual behaviors/STDs was analyzed using logis

Adolescence is a developmental period characterized by behavioral changes such as sensation seeking, impulsivity, and diminished self-control to inhibit behaviors, which can lead to increased risky behavior, including the initiation of binge drinking. Due to the necessity of peer-peer social interactions for proper development, social isolation can be particularly disruptive at this time, altering proper neural development and function and increasing risk for alcohol misuse. To investigate the effects of social context on ethanol drinking, we modulated the social environment of a mouse using s

RATIONALE: Female rodents consume more ethanol (EtOH) than males and exhibit greater aversion-resistant drinking in some paradigms. Ovarian hormones promote EtOH drinking but the contribution of ovarian hormones to aversion-resistant drinking has not been assessed.
OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate the role of ovarian hormones to aversion-resistant drinking in female mice in a drinking in the dark (DID) task.
METHODS: Female C57BL/6 J mice first underwent an ovariectomy (OVX, n = 16) or sham (SHAM, n = 16) surgery. Four weeks following surgery, mice underwent a DID paradigm where they were

BACKGROUND: Expanding our previous findings that model-based/model-free (MB/MF) control-often conceptualized as goal-directed and habitual behavior-at age 18 years was associated with alcohol drinking trajectories over 3 years, in this study, we investigated whether changes in MB/MF control from ages 18 to 21 1) stem from alcohol exposure and 2) predict drinking patterns up to age 24.
METHODS: We followed a community sample of 124 18-year-old men for 6 years. At ages 18 and 21, participants performed a 2-step task assessing MB and MF control while undergoing functional magnetic resonance imag

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use impacts brain structure, including white matter integrity, which can be quantified by fractional anisotropy (FA) in diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). This study explored the relationship between the severity of alcohol consumption and white matter FA changes, and its sex differences, in young adults, using data from the Human Connectome Project.
METHODS: We analyzed DTI data from 949 participants (491 females) and used principal component analysis (PCA) of 15 drinking metrics to quantify drinking severity. Connectome-based predictive modeling (CPM) was employed to predic

The behavioral problems and cognitive deficits resulting from even small amounts of prenatal alcohol exposure can be significant and enduring but completely preventable. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of a prenatal drinking goal selected during a brief intervention for 115 pregnant women and their partners on subsequent consumption. Higher proportions of women having their first pregnancy chose abstinence as a goal over drinking reduction. Goal selection was highly predictive of subsequent drinking behavior. Interestingly, the participants who were abstinent at enrollment

OBJECTIVE: Transdermal alcohol concentration (TAC) sensors capture aspects of drinking events that self-reports cannot. The multidimensional nature of TAC data allows novel classification of drinking days and identification of associated behavioral and contextual risks. We used multilevel latent profile analysis (MLPA) to create day-level profiles of TAC features and test their associations with (a) daily behaviors and contexts and (b) risk for alcohol use disorders at baseline.
METHOD: Two hundred twenty-two regularly heavy-drinking young adults (Mage = 22.3) completed the Alcohol Use Disord

The present study examined whether parental problem drinking affected parenting (i.e., behavioral control, support, rule-setting, alcohol-specific behavioral control), and whether parental problem drinking and parenting affected subsequent adolescent alcohol use over time. A total of 428 families, consisting of both parents and two adolescents (mean age 13.4 and 15.2 years at Time 1) participated in a three-wave longitudinal study with annual waves. A series of path analyses were conducted using a structural equation modeling program (Mplus). Results demonstrated that, unexpectedly, parental p

The investigation was carried out in a representative sample of subjects of the Federal Republic of Germany, including West Berlin (n = 1952). The subjects were 20--64 years old. The following were investigated: 1. Social and abusive drinking patterns 2. Relations between drinking behavior and sociodemographic data 3. Relations between drinking behavior and subjective feeling. Of the subjects, 47% consumed alcohol daily or several times a week, 6% called themselves teetotallers. Beer was the preferred beverage. The drinking behavior varied among income classes and vocational groups. Of the who

PURPOSE: There is a dearth of research on suicidal ideation (SI) that occurs specifically in the context of drinking alcohol. Alcohol use and binge drinking are both elevated among college students, among whom sexual and gender minority (SGM) students are at particular risk for SI. This manuscript examines alcohol use, SI, and SI specifically in the context of alcohol use among a large sample of undergraduate students and examines differences across sexual and gender minority groups.
METHODS: Data were drawn from ~ 300,000 students who completed the American College Health Association Nationa

Despite known confounds of social isolation on rodent behavior, many investigators rely on singly housing mice to assess alcohol preference in preclinical models of alcohol use disorder (AUD). This protocol describes a social alcohol drinking task that allows for high-throughput, automated assessment of alcohol drinking behaviors in mice without the confounding impacts of stress induced by social isolation. The IntelliCage testing system enables investigators to simultaneously assess operant alcohol drinking behavior in up to 16 same-sex mice, each uniquely identified with a subcutaneously imp

BACKGROUND: Peruvian men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women (TGW) experience the double burden of a highly concentrated HIV epidemic with a high prevalence of alcohol use disorders (AUDs). Recent research has associated both with risky sexual behaviors, including unprotected sex, having multiple sexual partners, engaging in sex work, having recent sexually transmitted infections, and having HIV-infected partners. AUDs have also been associated in MSM/TGW with being unaware of HIV+ status.
OBJECTIVES: This study aims to further examine issues associated with alcohol consumption,
