Adult health in the Russian Federation: more than just a health problem.

In this paper we discuss the Russian adult health crisis and its implications. Although some hope that economic growth will trigger improvements in health, we argue that a scenario is more likely in which the unfavorable health status would become a barrier to economic growth. We also show that ill health is negatively affecting the economic well-being of individuals and households. We provide suggestions on interventions to improve health conditions in the Russian Federation, and we show that if health improvements are achieved, this will result in substantial economic gains in the future.

Demographic-based risk of reporting psychopathology and poor health among mistreated older adults in the national elder mistreatment study wave II.

Objectives: Past year elder mistreatment rate is about 11% of community residing older adults, with significant demographic-based variations in prevalence. However, very little research on demographic variable-based differences in correlates of elder abuse, such as mental health, exist. The National Elder Mistreatment Study 8-year follow-up (NEMS II) specifically investigated the relation between demographic factors and the presence of these correlates (i.e. diagnoses of depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), and self-ratings of physical health).

The impact of socio-economic deprivation on burn injury: A nine-year retrospective study of 6441 patients.

INTRODUCTION: Low socio-economic status is thought to be associated with increased burn risk, however the significance and generalisability across different populations and cultures has been questioned. METHODS: A nine-year retrospective study of burn presentations to a large teaching hospital (2005-2014) was performed to investigate the association between socio-economic status and burns. Demographic and injury data was collected via the trust 'Information portal'. The Welsh Index of Multiple: Deprivation 2011 was used to score for socio-economic status. Deprivation, timing of preschool infections and H. pylori seropositivity at age 49-51 years: the Newcastle Thousand Families birth cohort.

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori infection is acquired in early childhood and persists for life (or until eradication treatment is taken). Seropositivity of H. pylori at age 49-51 years was assessed in relation to socio-economic deprivation in early life and the timing of other childhood infections common at that time. METHODS: Prospectively collected socio-economic and morbidity data from the Newcastle Thousand Families study, a birth cohort established in 1947. H. pylori IgG seropositivity was assessed at 49-51 years and examined in relation to both whether the individual had been diagnosed

Secular trends of dental caries and association with nutritional status: a retrospective analysis of 16,199 Chinese students from three successive national surveys from 2010 to 2019.

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of dental caries (DC) among students in developing countries has increased at an alarming rate, and nutritional status has been shown to be associated with DC in children and adolescents with inconsistent conclusions. We aimed to understand the trends of DC prevalence in students aged 7, 9, 12, and 14 years and to explore the relationship between DC prevalence and nutritional status. METHODS: We recruited 16,199 students aged 7, 9, 12, and 14 years in China by multi-stage, stratified, random sampling methods from 2010 to 2019. Permanent caries were measured using

Multidimensional burden of raising children with learning disabilities: a mothers' perspective on economic, psychological, and social challenges.

This study aimed to examine the level, prevalence, and determinants of family burden among mothers of children with learning disabilities, and to assess differences based on child disability severity, maternal education, and economic status. METHODS: A quantitative cross-sectio

Insurance status and psychological distress during the 2007 to 2009 U.S. recession: A novel integrative data analysis approach.

BACKGROUND: The 2007 to 2009 U.S. economic recession was associated with widespread job loss, housing instability, and rising mental health challenges. While previous studies have linked economic downturns to psychological distress, limited research has examined how health insurance status modifies this relationship during and after a recession. AIMS: This study investigated changes in psychological distress (PD) among U.S. adults before, during, and after the 2007 to 2009 recession and examined whether insurance status mediated the relationship between economic hardship and PD. METHODS: Usi

Functional impairment and the economic consequences of female breast cancer.

Recent trends in breast cancer diagnosis and mortality suggest that long-term survivors are now more likely to be functionally impaired and, hence, more likely to experience adverse economic outcomes. This study tests whether women who have survived breast cancer for at least five years exhibit more, or more severe, functional impairments than otherwise similar women without breast cancer. It also tests whether women with more severe impairments experience poorer economic outcomes attributable to their functional status. A group of 105 breast cancer survivors was interviewed to obtain data on

Risk factors for suicidal ideation among the older people living alone in rural region of China: A path analysis.

In China, suicide accounts for twenty-six percent of all suicides worldwide; however, researches on the suicidal ideation among older people living alone in the rural region are few. We performed a cross-sectional study to explore the prevalence and influence factors of suicidal ideation, and provide a theoretical basis for suicide prevention among older people living alone in rural region.695 older people living alone in rural region were selected by using stratified cluster sampling. Periodontal conditions and treatment needs, by CPITN, in the 35-44 and 65-74 year-old population in Santiago, Chile.

A CPITN survey involving Chileans aged 35-44 and 65-74 was conducted. A random, stratified sample by age, gender, socio-economic status and educational level was obtained, comprising 1150 individuals. Prevalence of chronic inflammatory periodontal disease (Codes 3 + 4) was 90.89 per cent in subjects aged 35-44, and 100 per cent in subjects aged 65-74. The total prevalence for both age cohorts was 92.19 per cent. Prevalence of periodontal disease was slightly lower in females but severity was significantly higher in males. A significant association between socio-economic status and periodontal

PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study population included 50 HNC patients seen in their control examinations after radiotherapy during a 2-month interval and who were willing to complete the Short-Form 36 QoL questionnaire. Socioeconomic, demographic, and tumor- and treatment-related factors were analyzed for their effect on physical component summary score (PCS) and mental component summary score (MCS) using the Mann-Whitney U test. [A PhD completed. Preventing dental caries through collaboration of healthy child programmes and oral healthcare providers].

Despite measures, caries in children continues to be a problem. Caries is seen more often in young children with a low socio-economic status than in children with a high socio-economic status. The aim of this PhD research was to find ways to improve preventive oral healthcare for all children. This was achieved by collecting scientific evidence in 3 research components: targeting, effectiveness and implementation of preventive oral healthcare. Analysis of the data revealed that, despite a system fully covering oral healthcare for children, there still are disparities in children s oral health

Evaluation of the ability of neurobiological, neurodevelopmental and socio-economic variables to predict cognitive outcome in premature infants.

BACKGROUND: When developed in the 1990s, the Neurobiologic Risk Score (NBRS) and Neurodevelopmental Risk Exam (NRE) correlated well with developmental outcomes in premature infants. Given recent advances in neonatology, we assessed their present ability to predict cognitive outcome, alone and combined with socio-economic factors. METHODS: One hundred and twenty-nine neonates <32 weeks gestational age were assessed at 6, 12 and/or 24 months corrected age with the Cognitive Adaptive Test/Clinical Linguistic and Auditory Milestone Scale (CAT/CLAMS). Indices of socio-economic status included mate

To what extent does IQ 'explain' socio-economic variations in function?

BACKGROUND: The aims of this study were to examine the extent to which higher intellectual abilities protect higher socio-economic groups from functional decline and to examine whether the contribution of intellectual abilities is independent of childhood deprivation and low birth weight and other socio-economic and developmental factors in early life. METHODS: The Maastricht Aging Study (MAAS) is a prospective cohort study based upon participants in a registration network of general practices in The Netherlands. Information was available on 1211 men and women, 24-81 years old, who were witho
