Contagious ecthyma commonly known as Orf is a globally important, highly contagious zoonotic, transboundary disease that affects domestic and wild ruminants. The disease is of great economic significance causing an immense impact on animal health, welfare, productivity, and trade. Detailed analysis of the viral genome is crucial to further elucidate the molecular mechanism of Orf virus (ORFV) pathogenesis. In the present study, a confluent monolayer of lamb testicle cells was infected with the processed scab sample obtained from an infected goat. The presence of the virus was confirmed using p

CONTEXT: Athletes are a unique group of patients whose activities, particularly in high-contact sports such as wrestling and football, place them at high risk of developing skin conditions. The correct diagnosis of sports dermatoses requires familiarity with their clinical characteristics. It is critical that primary care physicians recognize the most common skin disorders to provide prompt treatment and prevent transmission.
EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: The Mayo Clinic library obtained articles from 2012 onward related to dermatologic conditions in athletes.
STUDY DESIGN: Review article.

Contagious ecthyma dermatitis, caused by Orf virus (ORFV), is an important zoonotic disease of small ruminants, particularly goats and sheep, and can occasionally infect humans. The morbidity of the disease is high in newborn kids or lambs as compared with adult animals, even leading to death in severe cases due to emaciation or secondary infections. Despite its significance, the precise route of ORFV transmission to newborn kids or lambs has remained unclear. In this study, we hypothesized that ORFV may be transmitted transplacentally from dam to fetus and investigated the presence of the vir

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic pathogen with considerable morbidity and mortality, particularly in vulnerable hosts. Skin manifestations are common, either representing local inoculation or secondary skin seeding following bloodstream infections. As patients with various predisposing conditions are expanding, we sought to review the most recent published evidence regarding epidemiology, risk factors and diagnosis of skin manifestations of P. aeruginosa.
RECENT FINDINGS: New data exist on epidemiology and diagnosis of skin infections; systemic infections are impa

Orf (contagious ecthyma) is a zoonotic infection caused by a dermatotropic parapoxvirus that commonly infects sheep, goats, and oxen. Parapoxviruses are transmitted to humans through contact with an infected animal or fomites. Orf virus infections can induce ulceration, and papulonodular, pustular, or ecthymic lesions of the skin after contact with an infected animal or contaminated fomite. Rarely, orf virus provokes extensive vasculo-endothelial proliferation as a skin manifestation. Here, we present the case of an 8-year old female with poxvirus-induced vascular angiogenesis that developed 1

BACKGROUND: Smallpox is notorious for leaving its survivors with disfiguring scars, but it is unclear how these scars are produced. Modern dermatopathology textbooks report that smallpox produced epidermal lesions, yet the process of scarring requires dermal involvement.
OBJECTIVES: Our goal was to uncover past theories on the mechanism of smallpox scarring.
METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive review of English-language textbooks and English-translations of textbooks in general medicine, dermatology, pathology, and dermatopathology from the past 150 years as well as relevant journal public

Although there are notable infectious conditions that are capable of producing clinical disease in the NWC, overall, these species are quite healthy. Of the bacterial diseases, enterotoxemia caused by Clostridium perfringens types C and D would be deemed the most significant in North America, while type A also would be regarded as important in South America. Other important bacterial infections of potential concern are tuberculosis, Johne's disease, anthrax, malignant edema, actinomycosis, tetanus, and the South American condition referred to as alpaca fever, which, to date, has not been obser

Titers of anti-keratin antibodies (AKA) involving IgG and IgM fractions were determined by a solid-phase enzyme-linked immunsorbent assay (ELISA) and were found to be significantly higher on average in patients with pustulosis palmaris et plantaris (PPP) than in normal controls. Positive rates of IgG-AKA and IgM-AKA in sera of PPP patients were 50% and 66%, respectively. Following tonsillectomies, patients with high IgM-AKA titers that decreased after surgery were found to benefit by a marked improvement in their skin lesions. There was a close relationship between the degree of this improveme

A serological survey was carried out in the northern prefectures of Hokkaido, Iwate and Aomori in Japan, for the presence of antibodies against Toxoplasma gondii, Chlamydiapsittaci var. ovis, Mycobacterium paratuberculosis, Coxiella burnetii, Brucella spp., Leptospirosis and Orf virus (ORFV). Out of 267 samples tested, highest overall prevalence (28.78%) was found for T. gondii. The 12.59% of tested sheep were positive for C. psittaci var. ovis. A total of 8.67% were found to be seropositive for C. burnetii. Levels of these infections were found in all three prefectures. Seroconversion to ORFV

UNLABELLED: Introduction Leukocyte adhesion deficiency (LAD) type I is a well-recognized inborn error of immunity that typically presents in early childhood. However, cases with normal surface expression of adhesion molecules are rare and suggest that these molecules may be functionally impaired despite their preserved expression.
OBSERVATION: We report the case of a 3-year-and-8-month-old female with a family history of LAD type I due to absent adhesion molecule expression. The patient experienced recurrent hospitalizations since the neonatal period for multiple infections, predominantly ect

BACKGROUND: Chronic wounds on the leg (below the knee) are called leg ulcers. They have many causes, and thus patients with leg ulcers are treated by many different kinds of medical specialist. Appproximately 80% of sufferers have chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) and/ or peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAOD). Knowledge of the relevant differential diagnoses is important for appropriate treatment, particularly for patients with atypical findings or an intractable course.
METHODS: This article is based on publications retrieved by a selective search in PubMed, including current guideli

The first reported human case of possible disseminated infection with the insect pathogen Metarrhizium anisopliae var. anisopliae, a fungus which has been used commercially for biocontrol of insects, is described. The patient, a 9-year-old boy, had a 5-year history of pre-B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia and had been on chemotherapy throughout this period. After 10 days of profound neutropenia, lesions consistent with ecthyma gangrenosum appeared on his arms and legs. M. anisopliae was grown from specimens from three separate sites, collected at different times over a period of 1 month: a s

Contagious ecthyma, caused by Orf virus (Parapoxvirus), is enzootic in sheep and goats across Asia, Africa, and other regions of the world. Due to the self-limiting nature of the disease, it has been neglected for decades, causing huge economic losses to sheep and goat farming industries. Young animals are most widely affected by this disease. Several outbreaks of Orf virus disease have been reported in previous years in many provinces of China. By using the specific pathogen-free mice (C57BL/6), molecular detection (targeting the conserved region of the viral B2L gene), histopathological eval

BACKGROUND: Camel papillomatosis (CP) is caused by camel papillomavirus types 1 (CdPV1) and 2 (CdPV2), leading to noticeable lesions on the facial skin and eyes. Although seldom fatal, it can result in blindness and other deformities as lesions may spread to different body systems, similar to papillomaviruses infection in other animals. Cutaneous lesions in affected camel often resemble to those recorded in camel pox and camel contagious ecthyma (CCE), making accurate diagnosis a difficult task. The present study therefore aimed to develop a reliable laboratory test for diagnosis of camel papi

Nucleic acid amplification techniques (NATs), such as PCR, are highly sensitive and specific methods that have become valuable supplements to culture and serology in the diagnosis of infectious disorders. However, especially when using formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded tissue, these techniques are associated with both false-negative and false-positive results, a pitfall that is frequently misjudged. Representatives of the German Society of Hygiene and Microbiology (DGHM) and the German Society of Dermatology (DDG) therefore set out to develop a consensus - in the form of a review article -

Most emergencies in dermatology comprise a variety of entities with a usually benign course. However, vasculopathies and vasculitis are not common, but they could represent respectively 1.9% and 4.4% of these entities according to some studies of Emergency Dermatology Department. They become an important disease which has to be identified early to establish appropriate management and treatment. Some of them are well known, such as the leukocitoclastic vasculitis, Schölein-Henoch, panarteritis nodosa, antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody associated vasculitis, giant cell arteritis, cryoglobuline
