Dollfustrema durum n. sp. and Heterobucephalopsis perardua n. sp. (Digenea: Bucephalidae) from the giant moray eel, Gymnothorax javanicus (Bleeker) (Anguilliformes: Muraenidae), and proposal of the Heterobucephalopsinae n. subfam.

Two new species of bucephalid trematode (Platyhelminthes: Digenea) are described from the giant moray eel, Gymnothorax javanicus (Anguilliformes: Muraenidae), from off Lizard Island, Australia. We used a combined morphological and molecular-based approach targeting the internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) of the ribosomal DNA (rDNA) and the D1-D3 region of the large subunit (28S) of rDNA to circumscribe the species. Dollfustrema durum n. sp. is distinguished from seven congeners in having 5-6 rows of enlarged body spines circling the anterior portion of the rhynchus. From the remaining 10 spec

Roots of Lithospermum erythrorhizon promotes retinal cell survival in optic nerve crush-induced retinal degeneration.

Lithospermum erythrorhizon (L. erythrorhizon), used in traditional medicine, is a potent wound healing, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant plant. However, the effects of L. erythrorhizon on retinal degenerative diseases remain unknown. Here, we explored the protective effects of L. erythrorhizon in in vitro and in vivo retinal degeneration. We found that ethanol extract of L. erythrorhizon (EELE) and the dichloromethane fraction of L. erythrorhizon (MCLE) significantly increased cell viability under glutamate/BSO-induced excitotoxicity/oxidative stress in R28 cells. Treatment with EELE and MCLE

Shrinkage of human coronary arteries is an important determinant of de novo atherosclerotic luminal stenosis: an in vivo intravascular ultrasound study.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the occurrence of arterial remodelling types and its relation with the severity of luminal stenosis in atherosclerotic coronary arteries. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty one de novo coronary lesions of 20 patients, who were scheduled for percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA), were investigated with intravascular ultrasound before PTCA. Local arterial remodelling at the lesion site was studied by measuring the cross sectional area circumscribed by the external elastic lamina (EEL) relative to the reference site: (EEL area lesion/reference EEL area) x 100%. Increasing Risk Factors for Imported and Domestic Gnathostomiasis in the United States.

Gnathostomiasis is a foodborne zoonotic helminthic infection, commonly described in Asia and Latin America, which may follow the consumption of raw fish, eels, amphibians, and reptiles infected with muscle-encysted larvae of Gnathostoma species nematodes. After an inoculum of as little as one infective larva and an incubation period of months to years, most infections are characterized by intermittent migratory swellings due to subdermal larval migration. Less commonly, larval migration to the central nervous system may result in radiculomyelopathy or eosinophilic meningoencephalitis with high

Oral hormonal therapy with ethinylestradiol-levonorgestrel improves insulin resistance, obesity, and glycogen synthase kinase-3 independent of circulating mineralocorticoid in estrogen-deficient rats.

Estrogen deficiency has been associated with increased incidence of cardiovascular diseases , and recent clinical trials of standard formulations of hormonal therapies have not demonstrated consistent beneficial effects. Estrogen-progestin therapy has been used as exogenous estrogen to normalize depressed estrogen level during menopause. Ovariectomized rodents mimic an estrogen-deficient state in that they develop cardiometabolic dysfunction, including insulin resistance (IR). We therefore hypothesized that hormonal therapy with combined oral contraceptive steroids, ethinylestradiol-levonorges

Establishment of cell-lines stably expressing recombinant Japanese eel follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone using CHO-DG44 cells: fully induced ovarian development at different modes.

The gonadotropins (Gth), follicle-stimulating hormone (Fsh) and luteinizing hormone (Lh), play central roles in gametogenesis in vertebrates. However, available information on their differential actions in teleost, especially in vivo, is insufficient. In this study, we established stable CHO-DG44 cell lines expressing long-lasting recombinant Japanese eel Fsh and Lh with extra O-glycosylation sites (Fsh-hCTP and Lh-hCTP), which were produced in abundance. Immature female eels received weekly intraperitoneal injections of Gths. Fsh-hCTP induced the entire ovarian development by 8 weeks from the

Rescheduling the process of nanoparticle removal used for water mercury remediation can increase the risk to aquatic organism: evidence of innate immune functions modulation in European eel (Anguilla anguilla L.).

This study aimed to assess the mechanisms of innate immune function responses to silica-coated iron oxide nanoparticle functionalized with dithiocarbamate groups (IONP) exposure alone and its associated mercury (Hg) in European eel (Anguilla anguilla L.) phagocytes isolated from peritoneum (P-phagocytes), gill (G-phagocytes), head kidney (HK-phagocytes) and spleen (S-phagocytes). The study evaluated viability, phagocytosis, oxidative burst activity (OBA) and lipid peroxidation (LPO). Four groups were made: (1) 2 × 10(6) phagocytes + RPMI-1640 (control), (2) 2 × 10(6) phagocytes + IONP (2.5 mg

Androgen rather than estrogen up-regulates brain-type cytochrome P450 aromatase (cyp19a1b) gene via tissue-specific promoters in the hermaphrodite teleost ricefield eel Monopterus albus.

CYP19A1 in the brain and pituitary of vertebrates is important for reproductive and non-reproductive processes. In teleosts, it is broadly accepted that estradiol (E(2)) up-regulates cyp19a1b gene via a positive autoregulatory loop. Our present study, however, showed that E(2) did not up-regulate ricefield eel cyp19a1b in the hypothalamus and pituitary, whereas dihydrotestosterone (DHT) or testosterone (T) stimulated cyp19a1b expression only in the pituitary. Two tissue-specific promoters, namely promoter I and II directing the expression in the brain and pituitary respectively, were identifie

Trace element concentrations in Proteocephalus macrocephalus (Cestoda) and Anguillicola crassus (Nematoda) in comparison to their fish host, Anguilla anguilla in Ria de Aveiro, Portugal.

The use of some fish parasites as bioindicators of heavy metal pollution has been demonstrated as particularly adequate due to their capacity of bioconcentration. This study evaluated the effect of Proteocephalus macrocephalus on the accumulation of trace elements in the edible fish, Anguilla anguilla, in a contaminated area in Portugal (Ria de Aveiro). Also, the model P. macrocephalus/A. anguilla was assessed as a bioindicator system in the presence of the highly prevalent nematode Anguillicola crassus. Samples (kidney, liver, muscle, A. crassus and P. macrocephalus) of 20 eels harbouring A.

Probing Phonon Polaritons via Electron Microscopy: A Review.

Phonon polaritons (PhPs) are hybrid excitations arising from the coupling of optical phonons and electromagnetic waves, providing a versatile platform for exploring strong light-matter interaction studies and engineering the infrared response of polar materials. Their capability to confine and manipulate light well below the diffraction limit, combined with low losses, has enabled breakthroughs in subwavelength waveguiding, hyperlensing, infrared imaging, and molecular sensing. While far-field spectroscopy and scanning near-field optical microscopy have been widely used to characterize PhPs, t

The Fish Pathogen Vibrio vulnificus Biotype 2: Epidemiology, Phylogeny, and Virulence Factors Involved in Warm-Water Vibriosis.

Vibrio vulnificus biotype 2 is the etiological agent of warm-water vibriosis, a disease that affects eels and other teleosts, especially in fish farms. Biotype 2 is polyphyletic and probably emerged from aquatic bacteria by acquisition of a transferable virulence plasmid that encodes resistance to innate immunity of eels and other teleosts. Interestingly, biotype 2 comprises a zoonotic clonal complex designated as serovar E that has extended worldwide. One of the most interesting virulence factors produced by serovar E is RtxA13, a multifunctional protein that acts as a lethal factor for fish,

Complete Depletion of Primordial Germ Cells Results in Masculinization of Monopterus albus, a Protogynous Hermaphroditic Fish.

Primordial germ cells (PGCs) play an important role in sexual fate determination and gonadal development in gonochoristic fish, such as zebrafish and medaka. However, little is known about the function of PGCs in hermaphroditic fish. Rice field eel (Monopterus albus), a protogynous hermaphroditic fish, is an economically valuable aquaculture species. We eliminated PGCs in rice field eels during embryogenesis via morpholino-mediated knockdown dead end (dnd). The PGCs-depleted gonads developed into testis-like structures with Sertoli cells and Leydig cells. The gene expression pattern of 15-mont

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins, dibenzofurans and biphenyls in fish from the Netherlands: concentrations, profiles and comparison with DR CALUX bioassay results.

Fish from Dutch markets were analysed for concentrations of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (DL-PCBs) and compared with the new European maximum residue levels (MRLs), set in 2006. In a first study on 11 different fish and shellfish from various locations, concentrations of PCDD/Fs were nearly all below the MRL for PCDD/Fs [4 pg toxic equivalents (TEQ) per gram wet weight (ww)] and nearly all below 8 pg total TEQ/g ww, the new MRL for the sum of PCDD/Fs and DL-PCBs. Some samples exceeded the total TEQ MRL, such as anchovy, tun

Melanin concentrating hormone inhibits the release of alpha MSH from teleost pituitary glands.

A radioimmunoassay was developed for salmonid melanin concentrating hormone (MCH) and used to measure immunoreactive (ir)MCH in the hypothalamus and pituitary of trout (Salmo gairdneri) and eels, (Anguilla anguilla) maintained under different regimes of background color. In trout, 95% of the total irMCH was located in the pituitary gland. The amount of MCH in both pituitary and hypothalamus was increased when white-adapted trout were transferred to a black background. In eels, a similar change of background led to an accumulation of MCH in the pituitary but not in the hypothalamus. The results

Multisensory feedback makes swimming circuits robust against spinal transection and enables terrestrial crawling in elongate fish.

Vertebrate locomotion is due to the interplay of neural oscillators and sensory feedback loops in the spinal cord that interact with the body and the environment. Here, we study these circuits with a focus on undulatory locomotion as produced by elongated fish such as eels and lampreys. We address three questions: i) How do proprioception (stretch feedback) and exteroception (pressure on skin) interact with local oscillators to generate stable swimming patterns? ii) Can these feedback loops also contribute to dry ground locomotion? iii) Can they explain the remarkable robustness of eels agains

Molecular characterization and expression analysis of Asian swamp eel (Monopterus albus) CXC chemokine receptor (CXCR) 1a, CXCR1b, CXCR2, CXCR3a, CXCR3b, and CXCR4 after bacteria and poly I:C challenge.

The CXC chemokine receptors (CXCRs) play critical roles in innate and adaptive immune systems. In this study, six Asian swamp eel (Monopterus albus) CXCRs (MaCXCR1-4) were identified and their molecular characterization and expression patterns were analyzed. The open reading frames (ORFs) of MaCXCR1a, MaCXCR1b, MaCXCR2, MaCXCR3a, MaCXCR3b, and MaCXCR4 were 1074 bp (base pairs), 1080 bp, 1125 bp, 1146 bp, 1083 bp, and 1140 bp, and encoded proteins of 357 aa (amino acids), 359 aa, 374 aa, 381 aa, 360 aa, and 379 aa, respectively. All these CXCRs have seven conserved transmembrane domains and fou

A hepcidin homolog from Lateolabrax japonicus inhibits the infection of Anguillid herpesvirus 1 by interacting with the viral envelope protein ORF51.

Frequent outbreaks of eel "mucus sloughing and hemorrhagic septicemia disease" caused by Anguillid herpesvirus 1 (AngHV) are a major epidemic in both wild and farmed eels. This virus has garnered global attention due to heavy losses on eel farms and the lack of protective vaccines or effective drugs, highlighting the urgent need for potent antiviral agents. In this study, we revealed a hepcidin homolog LJ-hep2 from Japanese seabass (Lateolabrax japonicus) can bind to AngHV and impede viral entry into cells. LJ-hep2 could directly destroy the viral envelope and showed a higher anti-AngHV activi

Aeromonas hydrophila subsp. dhakensis isolated from feces, water and fish in Mediterranean Spain.

Eight Aeromonas hydrophila-like arabinose-negative isolates from diverse sources (i.e., river freshwater, cooling-system water pond, diseased wild European eels, and human stools) sampled in Valencia (Spain) during 2004-2005, were characterized by 16S rRNA gene sequencing and extensive biochemical testing along with reference strains of most Aeromonas species. These isolates and all reference strains of A. hydrophila subsp. dhakensis and A. aquariorum showed a 16S rRNA sequence similarity of 99.8-100%, and they all shared an identical phenotype. This matched exactly with that of A. hydrophila

Spontaneous precocious vitellogenesis of female Anguilla rostrata in captive seawater cage.

Northern hemisphere temperate Anguillid eels, including Anguilla rostrata, A. anguilla and A. japonica, typically exhibit ovarian development arrested at the oil droplet stage prior to seaward migration, with final maturation occurring during oceanic spawning migration. Although tropical anguillid eels can reach early to mid-vitellogenesis before the onset of spawning migration, spontaneous early vitellogenesis of captive-reared populations has not been documented. Here, we report large-scale spontaneous vitellogenesis in A. rostrata reared in a nearshore sea cage. Over 40% of the 2-year-old A

Dynamics of Anguillicola crassus (Nematoda: Dracunculoidea) larval infection in paratenic host fishes of Lake Balaton, Hungary.

Anguillicola crassus, a nematode parasitizing the swimbladder of the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) caused substantial mortality among eels in Lake Balaton in the years 1991 and 1992. Parallel to a 3-year study of the infection dynamics of eels, Anguillicola larval infection of paratenic host fishes was also surveyed in the lake between 1991 and 1993. During that study, a total of 1,382 specimens of 22 paratenic host fish species were processed. The results showed that anguillicolosis had become a parasitosis widespread throughout the lake, and larval infection could be detected in practical
