Assessing Ischemic Injury in Human Intestine Ex Vivo with Electrical Impedance Spectroscopy.

Electrical impedance spectroscopy is a well-established tool for monitoring changes in the electrical properties of tissue. Most tissue and organ types have been investigated in various studies. As for the small intestine, there are several published studies conducted on pig and rat models. This study investigates the changes in passive electrical properties of the complete wall of the human intestine non-invasively during ischemia. We aim to use the passive electrical properties to assess intestinal viability. The bioimpedance measurements were performed using a two-electrode set-up with a So

Mental disorders following electrical injuries-A register-based, matched cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Electrical injuries happen every day in homes and workplaces. Not only may these injuries cause physical damage and disability, they may also cause mental disorders. The aim of this study was to investigate if persons with an electrical injury suffer from mental disorders in the following years. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In a prospective matched cohort design, we identified 14.112 electrical injuries in two Danish registries and matched these with persons with dislocation/sprain injuries or eye injuries, respectively, as well as with persons from the workforce from the same occupati

Linagliptin Suppresses Electrical and Structural Remodeling in the Isoproterenol Induced Myocardial Injury Model.

The effect of DPP-4 inhibitor on the electrical and structural remodeling in myocardial injury has not been evaluated. We hypothesized that linagliptin, DPP-4 inhibitor, suppresses myocardial remodeling in the isoproterenol (ISP)-induced myocardial injury model.Sprague-Dawley rats were assigned to 3 groups: 1) sham group, 2) ISP group (subcutaneous ISP injection of 70 mg/kg), and 3) ISP + linagliptin (ISP + Lin) (5 mg/kg/day, p.o.) group. Serum was sampled on day 1 (acute phase) and day 7 (sub-acute phase) to evaluate derivatives of reactive oxidative metabolites (d-ROMs). The electrophysiolog

Direct current electrical injuries: A systematic review of case reports and case series.

BACKGROUND: Direct current (DC) powered equipment and devices, including photovoltaic systems, high-voltage direct current power lines and novel concepts in electromobility have become increasingly popular in recent years. However, under adverse circumstances by malfunction or mishandling of these applications electrical injuries may occur when electric current passes through the human body. This review aimed at systematically summarizing the medical consequences of DC electrical injuries described in case reports and case series. METHODS: The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews

Carpal tunnel syndrome after an electrical injury: a case report and review of literature.

INTRODUCTION: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is prevalent in workers who utilize hand-held vibration tools, engage in tasks involving repetitive wrist movements, and suffer from wrist overuse. Although electrical injuries involving the median nerve are a relatively rare but plausible cause of CTS, the related literature is limited. Here, we report a case of CTS in which the symptoms developed after an electrical injury, and review the related literature. CASE SUMMARY: The patient was a right-handed male electrician who often used hand tools but had no symptoms of CTS before the injury, with the

Brain hemorrhage after electrical burn injury: Case report and probable mechanism.

BACKGROUND: High-voltage electric injury may induce lesion in different organs. In addition to the local tissue damage, electrical injuries may lead to neurological deficits, musculoskeletal damage, and cardiovascular injury. Severe vascular damage may occur making the blood vessels involved prone to thrombosis and spontaneous rupture. CASE DESCRIPTION: Here, we present the case of a 39-year-old male who suffered an electrical burn with high tension wire causing intracranial bleeding. He presented with an electrical burn in the parietal area (entry zone) and the left forearm (exit zone). The

Development of ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction and Atrial Fibrillation after an Electrical Injury.

Electrical energy is a type of energy that is commonly used in daily life. Ventricular premature beats, ventricular tachycardia, ventricular fibrillation, atrial tachycardia, atrial fibrillation, bundle branch blocks, and AV block are arrhythmic complications that are encountered in case of electric shocks. Myocardial infarction is one of the rarely seen complications of electric shocks yet it has fatal outcomes. Coronary arteries were detected to be normal in most of the patients who had myocardial infarction following an electric shock. So, etiology of myocardial infarction is thought to be

Ischemic stroke after low-voltage electric injury in a diabetic and coagulopathic woman.

Electric injury is a common physical injury in daily life. Because of the low resistance of vascular tissue, vascular injury and thrombosis are frequently found in cases of high-voltage electric injury but are rarely reported in low-voltage conditions. We present the case of a diabetic woman who suffered symptomatic brainstem stroke after a short duration of 60 Hz/110 V alternate current electric contact with a home washer socket. A stroke risk factor survey did not reveal remarkable cardiac or vascular abnormality, except increased glycohemoglobin levels and decreased protein C activity. In c

Effects of glycine on electrical and histological properties of a rat peripheral nerve injury model.

BACKGROUND: Treatment of peripheral nerve injuries focuses on lesion type, from expectant to interfascicular repair. Many experiments have been undertaken using different factors to facilitate better or faster nerve stump growth: nerve growth factor (NGF), plaque growth factor (PGF), hyaluronic acid, leukemic inhibiting factor, and GABA, etc. Glycine is an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain stem and spinal cord, and it also plays a critical role as a modulator of NMDA receptors. We studied the potential regenerative effect of glycine administered for different periods of time and compare

Etiology of work-related electrical injuries: a narrative analysis of workers' compensation claims.

The purpose of this study was to provide new insight into the etiology of primarily nonfatal, work-related electrical injuries. We developed a multistage, case-selection algorithm to identify electrical-related injuries from workers' compensation claims and a customized coding taxonomy to identify pre-injury circumstances. Workers' compensation claims routinely collected over a 1-year period from a large U.S. insurance provider were used to identify electrical-related injuries using an algorithm that evaluated: coded injury cause information, nature of injury, "accident" description, and injur

Neuroprotective effect of transcorneal electrical stimulation on the acute phase of optic nerve injury.

PURPOSE: Traumatic optic neuropathy often induces a loss of vision that proceeds rapidly within several hours, together with retinal ganglion cell death, in a much slower time course. Electrical stimulation has previously been shown to rescue injured retinal ganglion cells from cell death. The present study tests whether transcorneal electrical stimulation could preserve visual function after an optic nerve crush. METHODS: Transcorneal electrical stimulation was given immediately after a calibrated optic nerve crush. We measured visually evoked potentials (VEPs) in the visual cortex of rats b
