Automated Identification of Surgical Site Infections From Electronic Medical Records: Retrospective Observational Predictive Modeling Study.

BACKGROUND: Surgical site infections (SSIs) affect 160,000 to 300,000 patients annually, increasing postoperative mortality, causing significant complications, and incurring US $3.5 to US $10 billion in excess costs each year. Effective SSI surveillance can inform strategies to mitigate these outcomes. Traditional SSI surveillance methods, primarily manual chart reviews, are costly and labor-intensive. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate whether an automated SSI surveillance system built using newer natural language processing methods and deep learning could outperform previous approaches

A cluster randomized controlled trial of an electronic medical record-based pathway for pediatric asthma in primary care in Alberta.

BACKGROUND: Primary care physicians, who manage the care of most children with asthma, often do not optimally assess disease control, prescribe asthma controller medications, or provide family asthma education. We developed a pediatric asthma clinical pathway embedded in an electronic medical record (EMR) for use by primary care practices, and we sought to evaluate its effects on prescription and use of asthma controller medication for children with asthma. METHODS: We conducted a cluster randomized controlled trial, enrolling primary care practices in Alberta that used Wolf or Med Access EMR

Improving ACS prediction in T2DM patients by addressing false records in electronic medical records using propensity score.

Our study aims to improve the prediction performance of machine learning (ML) models by addressing false records (i.e., false positive, false negative, or missingness) in binary categorical variables in electronic medical records (EMRs) using propensity score (PS). This study used the EMRs of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) treated with basal insulin at a tertiary university hospital in South Korea. We expanded the definition of PS into the probability of having a record for a binary variable given covariates. We calculated PS for the binary categorical variables in their EMRs an

An Australian survey of health professionals' perceptions of use and usefulness of electronic medical records in hospitalised children's pain care.

Pain in hospitalised children is common, yet inadequately treated. Electronic medical records (EMRs) can improve care quality and outcomes during hospitalisation. Little is known about how clinicians use EMRs in caring for children with pain. This national cross-sectional survey examined the perceptions of clinician-EMR users about current and potential use of EMRs in children's pain care. One hundred and ninety-four clinicians responded (n = 81, 74% nurses; n = 21, 19% doctors; n = 7, 6% other); most used Epic (n = 53/109, 49%) or Cerner (n = 42/109, 38%). Most (n = 84/113, 74%) agreed EMRs s

Quantitative patient graph analysis for transient ischemic attack risk factor distribution based on electronic medical records.

A transient ischemic attack (TIA) affects millions of people worldwide. Although TIA risk factors have been identified individually, a systemic quantitative analysis of all health factors relevant to TIA using electronic medical records (EMR) remains lacking. This study employed a data-driven approach, leveraging hospital EMR data to create a TIA patient health factor graph. This graph consisted of 737 TIA and 737 control patient nodes, 740 health factor nodes, and over 33,000 relations between patients and factors. For all health factors in the graph, the connection delta ratios (CDRs) were d
