Mesothelioma and employment in massachusetts: analysis of cancer registry data 1988-2003.

BACKGROUND: Cancer registries can be used to monitor mesothelioma cases and to identify occupations and industries previously and newly associated with mesothelioma-causing asbestos exposure by using standard registry data on the "usual" occupation and industry of the case. METHODS: We used the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health's Standardized Occupational Industry Coding Software to code 564 mesothelioma cases for occupation and 543 for industry of the 1,424 incident mesothelioma in the Massachusetts Cancer Registry from 1988 to 2003. Additionally, we coded the occupation

Personality disorder factors predict recovery of employment functioning among treated cocaine abusers.

BACKGROUND: Identifying treatments that produce specific benefits in nondrug psychosocial functioning areas such as employment functioning has been illusive. Examination of dimensions of clinical status that moderate such effects may be useful in planning more effective interventions. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to determine if life stress and four dimensions of personality and psychopathology previously found to predict early post-treatment relapse in diverse groups of substance abusers, predict less recovery in employment functioning among 240 cocaine dependent males after comp

Cancer's impact on employment and earnings--a population-based study from Norway.

INTRODUCTION: Increased attention is being paid to the long-term health and well-being of people living with a history of cancer. Of particular concern is cancer's effect on productivity and work ability, which in turn is important for persons' financial situation, life satisfaction, and social relationships. We explored the extent to which Norwegian cancer survivors stay affiliated to working life compared to the cancer-free population, and quantified cancer-associated earning declines. METHODS AND RESULTS: Logistic regression models were estimated to explore the impact of cancer on employme

Job terminations among persons with severe mental illness participating in supported employment.

For persons with psychiatric disabilities, maintaining a job is often more difficult than acquiring a job. A large proportion of jobs end unsatisfactorily. This study explored job terminations among 63 persons with severe mental illness who participated in competitive jobs through supported employment programs. More than half of the job terminations were unsatisfactory, defined as the client quitting without having other job plans or being fired. Baseline ratings of demographic and clinical characteristics, preemployment skills training, and early ratings of job satisfaction and work environme

Employment and physical work activities as predictors of future low back pain.

STUDY DESIGN: A population-based longitudinal study conducted in northwest England for a 12-month period involving adults aged 18-75 years. OBJECTIVES: To determine physical factors related to employment that predict a new episode of low back pain. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Most epidemiologic studies that have examined the relation between occupation and back pain have been cross-sectional or retrospective in design. Because workers who have experienced low back pain may have changed jobs or work activities, it is important to use longitudinal studies that define "exposures" before the ons

Slow walking speed and health-related exit from employment among older workers over 5 years of follow-up: evidence from the Health and Employment After Fifty (HEAF) cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: With demographic changes, there is increasing demand for individuals and governments to lengthen working lives. Jobs that are very physically demanding are likely to be more difficult to sustain at older ages. If workers at risk of mismatch of demand and capability could be identified early, there would be opportunities for intervention for health or lifestyle and/or re-training or redeployment. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether self-reported walking speed (a good measure of function in elderly people) predicted health-related job loss (HRJL) longitudinally over 5 years of follo

Housing Displacement, Employment Disruption, and Mental Health After the 2023 Maui Wildfires.

IMPORTANCE: Climate-related disasters are escalating in frequency and severity, yet their population-level mental health impacts-especially in racially and ethnically diverse and geographically isolated settings-remain poorly characterized. The 2023 Maui wildfires, one of the deadliest US wildfires in more than a century, offer a critical opportunity to quantify these effects. OBJECTIVE: To examine associations between wildfire exposure and symptoms of depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation and to assess indirect pathways of these associations through housing displacement and income disru

Obesity and employment: Causal evidence from Genetic Instruments in the UK Biobank.

This study explores the causal impact of obesity on employment using data from the UK Biobank, a comprehensive dataset combining genetic, health, and socioeconomic information. We apply a Mendelian Randomisation (MR) approach, using a genetic risk score for a higher body mass index (BMI) as an instrumental variable. This method leverages genetic predispositions determined at conception, enabling us to isolate the exogenous variation in obesity while addressing key endogeneity concerns, such as omitted variable bias and reverse causation. To account for the heterogeneity in obesity's impact acr

The Association Between Pre-injury Occupation Type and Post-burn Employment Outcomes.

PURPOSE: To explore the relationship between burn survivors' pre-injury occupation and the likelihood of successful return to employment in the post-rehab setting. METHODS: Participants in the Burn Model Systems database were designated as Labor or Non-labor employees based on their self-reported occupation pre-injury. The groups were compared across a variety of demographic and clinical variables using descriptive statistics. Logistic regression models were used to examine employment status at 12 months, and a Cox proportional hazards model was used to examine time to return to work. Sankey

Mental health and employment outcomes in working-age US adults, 2010-2019.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with severe mental illness experience greater unemployment and barriers to workforce re-entry. However, less is known about additional indicators of employment stability for individuals across mental illness severity. AIMS: This study aims to examine associations between mental illness severity, use and adequacy of mental health treatment, and indicators of employment stability. METHODS: In this repeated cross-sectional study, 2010-2019 data from the U.S. National Survey of Drug Use and Health were used to construct multivariate logistic regression models predicting t

Fertility knowledge and employment status among Japanese pregnant women: J-PEARL study.

OBJECTIVE: Despite recent improvements, fertility knowledge among Japanese individuals remains substantially lower than in other countries. This study aimed to evaluate fertility knowledge among women with pregnancy and childbirth experience and assess differences based on employment status, given the increasing intersection of professional careers and reproductive decision making. METHODS: A cross-sectional, multicenter questionnaire survey was administered to postpartum women at seven hospitals. The questionnaire assessed clinical and socioeconomic characteristics and incorporated the Cardi

Effectiveness of employment-based interventions for persons experiencing homelessness: A systematic review.

Employment is frequently desired by persons who experience homelessness yet is often elusive. Little is known about the range and effectiveness of employment-based interventions evaluated in existing literature on key psychosocial outcomes including employment participation, mental well-being, housing tenure, community integration and substance use. To identify and synthesise existing studies, we conducted a systematic review of effectiveness using the methodology proposed by the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA)

Using Machine Learning to Predict Patterns of Employment and Day Program Participation.

In this article, we demonstrate the potential of machine learning approaches as inductive analytic tools for expanding our current evidence base for policy making and practice that affects people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Using data from the National Core Indicators In-Person Survey (NCI-IPS), a nationally validated annual survey of more than 20,000 nationally representative people with IDD, we fit a series of classification tree and random forest models to predict individuals' employment status and day activity participation as a function of their responses to al

Employment and Occupational Productivity Among Women Living With HIV: A Conceptual Framework.

Women living with HIV (WLWH) have lower employment rates and more difficulty finding and keeping employment compared with their counterparts without HIV. These disparities affect physical, psychological, and socioeconomic outcomes, and they may compound the disadvantages associated with living with HIV. Although historical literature has emphasized the impact of clinical factors on employment, current evidence suggests that socioeconomic and psychosocial factors associated with HIV should be included for a more comprehensive view. Based on this broader inclusion, a conceptual framework is pres

A Trip Through Employment Law: Protecting Therapeutic Psilocybin Users in the Workplace.

In 2020, Oregon voters legalized therapeutic psilocybin in response to a plethora of scientific studies showing symptom reduction for depression, anxiety, substance use disorders, opioid addictions, migraines, other mental illnesses, HIV/AIDS, and cancer. The legal rethinking regarding therapeutic psilocybin continues in both state legislatures and city councils. Yet, despite state and local legalization or decriminalization of therapeutic psilocybin it remains illegal under the federal Controlled Substances Act. This tension between local and federal law places therapeutic psilocybin users an
