Until recently, there has been no formal research ethics training program in The Gambia, despite decades of conducting research. This study aimed to evaluate the awareness, knowledge, attitudes, and practices of research ethics and Research ethics committees (RECs) among health professionals across various health cadres before the commencement of a postgraduate certificate program. A cross-sectional survey was conducted using an online questionnaire. Chi-square tests and multivariable binary logistic regression models were used to examine the associations between independent variables and know

BACKGROUND: Oncogeriatrics is a sensitive medical specialty dealing with malignant neoplastic diseases in elderly patients. Ethical challenges have emerged due to both the specific characteristics of the affected population and the severity of the disease.
AIM: To report and analyze the ethical issues raised in oncogeriatrics.
RESULTS: Oncogeriatrics is an emerging specialty that has developed in response to two major epidemiological observations: the aging population and the increasing number of cancer patients. Assessing these patients using specific scoring tools is essential to identify

Extracorporeal life support (ECLS) has the ability to support patients with severe forms of cardiac and respiratory failure. Rapid expansion of ECLS, its resource-intensive and invasive nature, and the high acuity illness of supported patients have raised important questions. Specific issues include identification of patients most likely to benefit, the appropriate duration of support amid uncertain prognosis, and what to do when patients become dependent on ECLS but no longer have hope for recovery or transplantation. Careful deliberation of ethical principles and potential dilemmas should be

Liver transplantation represents a pivotal intervention in the management of end-stage liver disease, offering a lifeline to countless patients. Despite significant strides in surgical techniques and organ procurement, ethical dilemmas and debates continue to underscore this life-saving procedure. Navigating the ethical terrain surrounding this complex procedure is hence paramount. Dissecting the nuances of ethical principles of justice, autonomy and beneficence that underpin transplant protocols worldwide, we explore the modern challenges that plaques the world of liver transplantation. We in

Ethical publishing practices are vital to tobacco control research practice, particularly research involving Indigenous (Indigenous peoples: For the purposes of this Special Communication, we use the term Indigenous people(s) to include self-identified individuals and communities who frequently have historical continuity with precolonial/presettler societies; are strongly linked to the land on which they or their societies reside; and often maintain their own distinct language(s), belief and social-political systems, economies and sciences. Recently, several states in the United States have sought to adopt more restrictive abortion policies. Most have tried to enact "heartbeat bills" that prohibit most abortions once a fetal heartbeat becomes detectable. This article explores this question: Are heartbeat bills ethically defensible? I argue that they are not. There are at least four problems with them. First, heartbeat bills rely on a problematic understanding of human death. Second, they contradict and even undermine the leading arguments in ethics against abortion. Third, they are ambiguous not just in terms of when they judge f

Mankind has to prepare for a pandemic with respect to medical and practical aspects, but also with respect to ethical issues. There are various ethical guidelines for managing infectious disease outbreaks, but they do not apply to the specific aspects of the COVID-19 pandemic, since they were formulated after the different kinds of outbreaks of avian influenza and Ebola. Today we are confronted with completely new issues endangering our fundamental human rights. As COVID-19 is spreading all over the world, we are in a desperate situation to find treatment solutions; however, despite the urgenc

Dysphagia management is complex and requires balancing individuals' preferences, quality of life, and medical consequences. Ethical challenges are not uncommon given the complexity of dysphagia. Professionals must engage in ethical reflection and shared decision-making when managing dysphagia. Recognizing one's own presuppositions and beliefs may be fundamental to ensuring an ethical approach. The goal of this article is to apply principles of ethics using hypothetical case studies of dysphagia. To this end, we will describe the challenges of working with the disorder of dysphagia; the influen

Sex-change procedures, better described as gender-change procedures, involve preparing patients psychologically and surgically for gender transition to treat their gender dysphoria. Physical treatment might include hysterectomy for female to male transition, and post-castration fashioning of an artificial vagina for male to female transition. Conservative opposition to accommodating and recognizing such procedures remains in some countries, and where treated, transgender individuals might face social hostility and oppression. However, human rights laws increasingly provide for transgender non-

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is an effective and safety medical procedure, broadly utilized in several countries for the treatment of multiple mental disorders, including major depressive disorder, which is a prevalent disease. However, due the records of their use, technical inappropriate of application, adverse effects and even cases of death associated to the procedure, it has been stigmatized, disused and considered unethical treatment. This paper reviews the main components of ECT and discuss in it is a bioethical treatment.

This article summarizes the report of the American Medical Association's (AMA) Council on Ethical and Judicial Affairs (CEJA) on ethical practice in telehealth and telemedicine. Through its reports and recommendations, CEJA is responsible for maintaining and updating the AMA Code of Medical Ethics (Code). CEJA reports are developed through an iterative process of deliberation with input from multiple stakeholders; report recommendations, once adopted by the AMA House of Delegates, become ethics policy of the AMA and are issued as Opinions in the Code. To provide enduring guidance for the medic

Uterus transplantation is an experimental treatment method with an ambition to become accepted treatment modality for women with absolute uterine factor infertility. The only legal alternative for these women to get parenthood is adoption which is accepted by most world societies and countries. Surrogate pregnancy is connected with many medical, ethical, legal, religious and social controversies in the great part of the world.Donors (in living donation), recipients, partners and also unborn children must be incorporated into the analysis of ethical risks and benefits of uterus transplantation.

In this paper, we argue that antibiotic resistance (ABR) raises a number of ethical problems that have not yet been sufficiently addressed. We outline four areas in which ethical issues that arise in relation to ABR are particularly pressing. First, the emergence of multidrug-resistant and extensively drug-resistant infections exacerbates traditional ethical challenges of infectious disease control, such as the restriction of individual liberty for the protection of the public's health. Second, ABR raises issues of global distributive justice, both with regard to the overuse and lack of access

In the 1970s, under pressure from certain sections of society and thanks to initiatives by several scientific research teams, committees charged with improving the conditions of laboratory animals started to be created, first in the United States and subsequently in Europe. This led to the development of an ethical approach to animal experimentation, taking into account new scientific advances. In addition to the legislation designed to provide a legal framework for animal experimentation and to avoid abuses, this ethical approach, based on the concept that animals are sentient beings, encoura

For the moral evaluation of organ transplantations, it is not only relevant that they are potentially live-saving or significantly life-improving procedures. It is also relevant that they may have an impact on the integrity or even dignity of possible donors and are a potential strain on the donors' relatives. In order to find out how the different impacts of organ transplantation on the parties involved are to be morally weighed against one other, the concepts of dignity and of negative and positive moral rights are clarified. Against the widely held view that the procurement of organs from b

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The evolution of scientific advancements that paved the way for clinical cardiac transplantation spans the era of the 20 century, heart transplantation has revolutionized therapy for end-stage heart failure. Demand far exceeds supply, resulting in a long waiting period, and an increasing number of deaths while on a waiting list. The shortage of donors poses dilemmas for allocation of organs and managing the waiting list.
RECENT FINDINGS: The disparity between the demand and supply for donor hearts makes cardiac retransplantation an ethical issue with some patients being all
