Management of cognitive-motor interference in dual-task walking among healthy children aged 7-12 years.

This study investigated cognitive-motor interference (CMI) and attentional resource management during development using a dual-task (DT) paradigm. Participants aged 7-9 years (n = 11), 10-12 years (n = 14), and adults (n = 17) performed an auditory oddball task with two difficulty levels while sitting or walking on a treadmill. Cognitive and motor performance, along with P3a and P3b event-related potentials, were analyzed. Results showed improved cognitive and motor performance with age, associated with reorganization of brain responses. Children exhibited larger P3a and P3b amplitudes compare

Causality in the association between P300 and alpha event-related desynchronization.

Recent findings indicated that both P300 and alpha event-related desynchronization (α-ERD) were associated, and similarly involved in cognitive brain functioning, e.g., attention allocation and memory updating. However, an explicit causal influence between the neural generators of P300 and α-ERD has not yet been investigated. In the present study, using an oddball task paradigm, we assessed the task effect (target vs. non-target) on P300 and α-ERD elicited by stimuli of four sensory modalities, i.e., audition, vision, somatosensory, and pain, estimated their respective neural generators, and i

Electrophysiological indicators of visuomotor planning: delay-dependent changes.

A visuomotor task was used to investigate the influence of a varying response delay on the evoked activity measured during motor planning. Participants performed one-dimensional hand movements to visual targets after 200-, 1,000-, and 5,000- msec. delays with respect to the target offset. In response to an imperative go signal, similar deflections were observed over motor areas in all delay conditions. In contrast, activity at posterior electrodes was strongly delay-dependent. During the shortest delay condition, evoked alpha oscillations were pronounced at occipitoparietal recording sites and

Effect of psychostimulants on distinct attentional parameters in attentional deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Although there is extensive literature about the effects of stimulants on sustained attention tasks in attentional deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), little is known about the effect of these drugs on other attentional tasks involving different neural systems. In this study we measured the effect of stimulants on ADHD children, both in the electroencephalographic (EEG) activity during sustained attentional tasks and in psychometric performance during selective attentional tasks. These tasks are known to rely on different cortical networks. Our results in children medicated with 10 mg of d-

Event-related Potentials Improve the Efficiency of Cerebrospinal Fluid Biomarkers for Differential Diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease.

INTRODUCTION: The pathological process of Alzheimer's disease (AD) in the brain likely begins 20-30 years earlier than the emergence of its first clinical symptoms and symptoms of AD often overlap with the symptoms of other primary causes of dementia. Therefore, it is crucially important to improve early and differential diagnosis of the disease. Event-related potentials (ERP) measured non-invasively by electroencephalography have shown diagnostic potential in AD. AIMS: The aim of this study was to compare the efficiency of P300 and N200 potentials and reaction time (RT) with commonly used pr

Engaging Children in Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) Development: Utilizing an Interactive iPad Tool to Capture Picture-Based P300-Based BCI Augmentative and Alternative Communication Design Preferences.

INTRODUCTION: P300-based brain-computer interface augmentative and alternative communication (P300-BCI-AAC) systems show promise for supporting communication for children with severe speech and physical impairments. However, little is known about how children prefer these displays to be designed. This study examined children's design choices and the rationales guiding those choices to inform the development of user-centered, pediatric BCI-AAC displays. METHOD: Thirty-eight typically developing children (8-12 years of age) used a P300-BCI-AAC design application to create their preferred pictur

Fatigue in children using motor imagery and P300 brain-computer interfaces.

BACKGROUND: Brain-computer interface (BCI) technology offers children with quadriplegic cerebral palsy unique opportunities for communication, environmental exploration, learning, and game play. Research in adults demonstrates a negative impact of fatigue on BCI enjoyment, while effects on BCI performance are variable. To date, there have been no pediatric studies of BCI fatigue. The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of two different BCI paradigms, motor imagery and visual P300, on the development of self-reported fatigue and an electroencephalography (EEG) biomarker of fatigue i

Effects of changes in end-tidal PO2 and PCO2 on neural responses during rest and sustained attention.

Impairments of cognitive function during alterations in arterial blood gases (e.g., high-altitude hypoxia) may result from the disruption of neurovascular coupling; however, the link between changes in arterial blood gases, cognition, and cerebral blood flow (CBF) is poorly understood. To interrogate this link, we developed a multimodal empirical strategy capable of monitoring neural correlates of cognition and CBF simultaneously. Human participants performed a sustained attention task during hypoxia, hypercapnia, hypocapnia, and normoxia while electroencephalographic (EEG) activity and CBF (m

The neural dynamics underlying the interpersonal effects of emotional expression on decision making.

Although numerous studies explore the effects of emotion on decision-making, the existing research has mainly focused on the influence of intrapersonal emotions, leaving the influence of one person's emotions on another's decisions underestimated. To specify how interpersonal emotions shape decision-making and delineate the underlying neural dynamics involved, the present study examined brain responses to utilitarian feedback combined with angry or happy faces in competitive and cooperative contexts. Behavioral results showed that participants responded slower following losses than wins when c

Effects of a small dose of triazolam on P300 and resting EEG.

The aim of the present study was to clarify whether cognitive impairments caused by benzodiazepines (BDZs) are a consequence of their specific direct effects on cognitive function or whether they are explained as secondary effects of increased sleepiness. Ten healthy men (mean age, 33.9 years) participated in two experimental sessions in a randomized cross-over, double-blind study: in one session subjects were given a placebo and in the other they were given 0.125 mg triazolam (TRZ). Each experimental session was conducted on 1 day. After a pre-drug EEG recording and an event-related potential

Source localization of late electrocortical positivity during symptom provocation in spider phobia: an sLORETA study.

This symptom provocation study on spider phobia investigated sources of late event-related potentials (ERPs) using sLORETA (standardized low resolution brain electromagnetic tomography). Twenty-five phobic female patients and 20 non-phobic controls were confronted with phobia-relevant, generally fear-inducing, disgust-inducing and affectively neutral pictures while an electroencephalogram was recorded. Mean amplitudes of ERPs were extracted in the time windows 340-500 ms (P300) and 550-770 ms (late positive potential, LPP). Phobics showed enhanced P300 and LPP amplitudes in response to spider

The modulation of reward expectancy on the processing of near-miss outcomes: An ERP study.

A near-miss is a situation in which a gambler almost wins but falls short by a small margin, which motivates gambling by making it feel like success is within reach. Existing research has extensively investigated the influence of contextual information on near-miss outcome processing; however, the impact of reward expectancy has received limited attention thus far. To address this gap, we utilized the wheel of fortune task and event-related potential technique (ERP) to quantify the electrophysiological responses associated with gambling outcomes at different levels of reward expectancy. Stress effects on learning and feedback-related neural activity depend on feedback delay.

Depending on feedback timing, the neural structures involved in learning differ, with the dopamine system including the dorsal striatum and anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) being more important for learning from immediate than delayed feedback. As stress has been shown to promote striatum-dependent learning, the current study aimed to explore if stress differentially affects learning from and processing of immediate and delayed feedback. One group of male participants was stressed using the socially evaluated cold pressor test, and another group underwent a control condition. Subsequently, part
