Non-immersive virtual reality based treatment for children with unilateral cerebral palsy: Preliminary results.

PURPOSE: Unilateral cerebral palsy (UCP) represents about 30-40% of overall cerebral palsy diagnoses. Upper limb impairment has a significant negative impact on activities of daily living (ADL), and recent studies have shown that the use of virtual reality (VR) can increase motivation and promote an improvement in ADL. This preliminary study was aimed at exploring the acceptability and usability of a VR rehabilitation treatment, using the VITAMIN Platform, for children with UCP. A secondary goal of the study was to compare the results of usual standardized clinical scales and questionnaires wi

Effectiveness of Technological Interventions for Older Adults With Parkinson Disease: Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Among the older population, Parkinson disease (PD) stands out as a leading contributor to disability. Clinically, the foremost objectives in managing PD involve proactively delaying and preventing disability. Understanding the pivotal role of gait and balance in daily functionality holds substantial clinical significance, signaling imminent disability and prompting a reevaluation of management approaches. A key priority lies in identifying novel and effective interventions for symptoms that substantially contribute to disability. OBJECTIVE: This paper presents a systematic review

PATHway I: design and rationale for the investigation of the feasibility, clinical effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of a technology-enabled cardiac rehabilitation platform.

INTRODUCTION: Exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation (CR) independently alters the clinical course of cardiovascular diseases resulting in a significant reduction in all-cause and cardiac mortality. However, only 15%-30% of all eligible patients participate in a phase 2 ambulatory programme. The uptake rate of community-based programmes following phase 2 CR and adherence to long-term exercise is extremely poor. Newer care models, involving telerehabilitation programmes that are delivered remotely, show considerable promise for increasing adherence. In this view, the PATHway (Physical Activity T

Virtual Reality-Based Rehabilitation in Children and Adolescents with Muscular Dystrophy: A Systematic Review of Feasibility, Engagement, and Clinical Outcomes.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Muscular dystrophies (MDs) are progressive neuromuscular disorders in which rehabilitation is central to management, yet conventional physical therapy in children is constrained by motivation, accessibility, and the need to adapt across disease stages. Virtual reality (VR) offers an interactive, adaptable, and home-deliverable alternative, but prior reviews focused narrowly on upper-limb outcomes in Duchenne muscular dystrophy or on motor-learning paradigms. We aimed to evaluate VR-based rehabilitation in children and adolescents with MD across feasibility/adherence, eng

Role of joint interactions in upper limb joint movements: a disability simulation study using wearable inertial sensors for 3D motion capture.

BACKGROUND: Restriction of movement at a joint due to disease or dysfunction can alter the range of motion (ROM) at other joints due to joint interactions. In this paper, we quantify the extent to which joint restrictions impact upper limb joint movements by conducting a disability simulation study that used wearable inertial sensors for three-dimensional (3D) motion capture. METHODS: We employed the Wearable Inertial Sensors for Exergames (WISE) system for assessing the ROM at the shoulder (flexion-extension, abduction-adduction, and internal-external rotation), elbow (flexion-extension), an

Nature-based and technology-assisted exercise for cognitive and mobility outcomes in older adults: a systematic review of randomized trials.

BACKGROUND: Population aging and rising rates of mild cognitive impairment and mood symptoms have intensified interest in low-cost strategies to preserve brain health and independence. Physical activity is an established protective factor, but adherence to exercise programs remains suboptimal. Emerging work suggests that the exercise environment, including natural settings and immersive or interactive formats, may confer benefits beyond conventional indoor training. METHODS: We systematically searched major electronic databases for randomized trials in older adults that compared nature-based o

Physical Training in Parkinson's Disease: A Systematic Review of Neurobiological Mechanisms, Brain-Muscle Adaptations, and Implications for Personalized Rehabilitation.

BACKGROUND: Physical Training (PT), defined a planned, structured, and long-term exercise intervention, is recognized as an important non-pharmacological therapy in Parkinson's disease (PD). Beyond its symptomatic benefits, experimental evidence suggests that PT may also modulate pathological mechanisms involved in dopaminergic neurodegeneration. This systematic review summarizes the neurobiological and neurophysiological adaptations induced by PT in animal models of PD and in patients with PD, and proposes mechanistically driven recommendations for personalized exercise prescription. Feedback on Trunk Movements From an Electronic Game to Improve Postural Balance in People With Nonspecific Low Back Pain: Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Postural balance is compromised in people with low back pain, possibly by changes in motor control of the trunk. Augmenting exercising interventions with sensor-based feedback on trunk posture and movements might improve postural balance in people with low back pain. OBJECTIVE: We hypothesized that exercising with feedback on trunk movements reduces sway in anterior-posterior direction during quiet standing in people with low back pain. Secondary outcomes were lumbar spine and hip movement assessed during box lift and waiter bow tasks, as well as participant-reported outcomes. Adh

Mapping the longitudinal trajectories of postural control and functional activity after stroke using clinical and sensor-based assessments: protocol of the FOSTER prospective cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Stroke is a leading cause of long-term disability, yet recovery trajectories are highly heterogeneous and difficult to predict at the individual level. Standardised clinical assessments primarily capture task accomplishment under controlled conditions but may overlook changes in movement quality, including the distinction between compensatory strategies and behavioural restitution. Additionally, they provide limited insight into the postural control processes that underlie functional task performance. Recent consensus initiatives emphasised the need for sensitive, functionally re

An Integrated Virtual Reality-Based Telerehabilitation Platform to Support Recovery and Maintenance of Functional Abilities Among Older Adults: Protocol for a Usability and Acceptability Study.

BACKGROUND: Population aging leads to increased disability, implying a significant effect on health care systems and the lives of caregivers. As an example, stroke is a major cause of common diseases and is one of the leading causes of disability in older adults. Rehabilitation is the most effective intervention to counteract patient disability and simultaneously reduce the burden on caregivers. In particular, repetitive and task-specific training seems to be the most effective intervention for poststroke rehabilitation. Virtual reality (VR) is a very useful tool to provide this type of interv
