[Eye movement disorder in albinos (author's transl)].

Recent studies have shown misdirected optic fibres in albinotic animals to the lateral geniculate body, to the visual cortex and to the superior colliculi. Since a similar anomaly was found anatomiclly and neurophysiologically in human albinos, an oculography was performed in 10 albinos. The results were identical to those found in the so called congenital nystagmus. It remains doubtful that the misdirection is an explanation for the nystagmus in albinotic humans.

The underlying causes of eye movement disorders and ataxia.

This case report describes a 54-year-old Chinese woman with progressive gait instability, speech slowing, and cerebellar ataxia. Initial symptoms included mild bradykinesia and frequent backward falls. Neurological evaluation revealed supranuclear gaze palsy, hyporeflexia, and cerebellar dysfunction (SARA 26/40). Differential diagnoses included MSA, SCA, and PD. Genetic testing excluded SCA, while advanced imaging ruled out other disorders. The patient met criteria for probable PSP-C, a rare PSP subtype marked by cerebellar ataxia. [18F]PM-PBB3 tau PET imaging demonstrated abnormal tau accumul

Non-nystagmus hyperkinetic eye movement disorders.

BACKGROUND: While nystagmus is an involuntary ocular movement relatively frequent, well described, and easily recognized by most practitioners, non-nystagmus hyperkinetic eye movement disorders (NHEMD) are less obvious and can be overlooked. NHEMD may arise from intrinsic abnormalities in ocular muscles and oculomotor nerves, brain and brainstem lesions, systemic diseases, dysimmune disorders, drugs or can even be functional in nature. Given that some treatable disorders initially manifest with NHEMD, their knowledge becomes crucial. AIMS: This review aims to offer a practical and comprehensi

Dyslexia Analysis and Diagnosis Based on Eye Movement.

Dyslexia is a complex reading disorder characterized by difficulties in accurate or fluent word recognition, poor spelling, and decoding abilities. These challenges are not due to intellectual, visual, or auditory deficits. The diagnosis of dyslexia is further complicated by symptom variability, influenced by cultural and personal factors. This study leverages Virtual Reality (VR) advancements, eye movement tracking, and machine learning to create a virtual reading environment that captures eye movement data. This data extracts features such as eye movement metrics, word vectors, and saliency

Clinical availability of eye movement during reading.

Eyes provide valuable information for neurological diagnosis. So far, the use of diagnostic devices to analyze eye movement is limited. We explored whether the analysis of eye movements can be efficacious. Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) (n = 29), spinocerebellar degeneration (SCD) (21), progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) (19), and control individuals (19) participated in this study. The patients read aloud two sets of sentences displayed on a monitor: one was displayed horizontally, and the other vertically. Parameters such as eye movement speed, travel distance, and fixation/saccade

Recognition of Emotion by Brain Connectivity and Eye Movement.

Simultaneous activation of brain regions (i.e., brain connection features) is an essential mechanism of brain activity in emotion recognition of visual content. The occipital cortex of the brain is involved in visual processing, but the frontal lobe processes cranial nerve signals to control higher emotions. However, recognition of emotion in visual content merits the analysis of eye movement features, because the pupils, iris, and other eye structures are connected to the nerves of the brain. We hypothesized that when viewing video content, the activation features of brain connections are sig

Interventions for disorders of eye movement in patients with stroke.

BACKGROUND: Eye movement disorders may affect over 70% of stroke patients. These eye movement disorders can result in difficulty maintaining the normal ocular position and difficulty moving the eyes appropriately. The resulting functional disabilities include a loss of depth perception, reduced hand-to-eye co-ordination, marked difficulties with near tasks and reading and reduced ability to scan the visual environment. They can also impact on the effectiveness of rehabilitation therapy. There are a wide variety of different treatment interventions proposed for eye movement disorders after stro

Non-rapid eye movement sleep parasomnias.

Parasomnias are unpleasant or undesirable behavioral or experiential phenomena that occur during sleep. Once believed unitary phenomena related to psychiatric disorders, it is now clear that parasomnias result from several different phenomena and usually are not related to psychiatric conditions. Parasomnias are categorized as primary (disorders of the sleep states) and secondary (disorders of other organ systems that manifest themselves during sleep). Primary sleep parasomnias can be classified according to the sleep state of origin: rapid eye movement sleep, non-rapid eye movement sleep, and

Rapid Eye Movement Sleep-related Parasomnias.

Among the rapid eye movement (REM) sleep-related parasomnias, the most common and important disorder for which patients present is REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD). Rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder is often undiagnosed for many years, despite the sometimes bizarre and harmful behaviors involved. Complete evaluation and accurate diagnosis are essential for proper management. This includes medical, sleep/wake, psychiatric, and neurologic histories. Although they may raise feelings of guilt or shame, questions related to sexual and violent behaviors should be directed towards the ident

Rapid-eye-movement sleep in jittery infants.

BACKGROUND: The pathogenesis of neonatal jitteriness (JT) remains unknown. Neonatal JT could be one of the symptoms associated with drug withdrawal syndrome due to maternal medication. To study the influence of chemicals and environment on brain development in the fetal period, Swaab and Mirmiran proposed "behavioral teratology". JT could be one of the targets for this concept. Swaab and Mirmiran postulated that rapid-eye-movement sleep (REM sleep) is useful for studying behavioral teratology. AIM: We aimed to determine the neurophysiological alterations in infants with JT by investigating RE

Rapid eye movement sleep in breath holders.

One-night polysomnography was performed on seven subjects suffering from breath-holding spells, including one whose death was suggested to be a consequence of a breath-holding spell. The fatal case showed no rapid eye movements (REMs) during REM sleep, although he exhibited REMs during wakefulness. The average numbers of both REMs and bursts of REMs in REM sleep in the other six breath holders were significantly lower than those in age-matched controls. The breath holders showed no airway obstruction, desaturation, or sleep fragmentation. Since the rapid ocular activity in REM sleep is generat

Eye movement abnormalities in a case of Tourette syndrome.

Tourette syndrome (TS) is a neuropsychiatric disorder that is characterised by the presence of multiple vocal, facial, and motor tics which change with time, and a number of other behavioural phenomena. Previous studies have not revealed any ocular-motor abnormalities. We report the eye movement studies of a patient with TS, using electrooculography and simultaneous video recording. Intrusive saccades occurred during smooth pursuit and optokinetic nystagmus. Reflexive and voluntary saccades were dysmetric and there was a complete failure of antisaccades. These abnormalities are characteristic

[Quantitative analysis of smooth pursuit eye movement].

Abnormalities of smooth pursuit eye movement (SPEM) have been estimated, mainly using the wave form on an electro-oculogram, in a qualitative way. Many methods for quantitative analysis of SPEM have been designed, though most are still uncommon in present clinical use. Using a personal computer, we developed a method of automatic quantitative analysis of ocular tracking eye movement recorded by electro-oculography (EOG). The design concept of this method is based on the observation that eye movement during ocular tracking consists of two different kinds of eye movements, one is SPEM and the ot

Vermal infarct with pursuit eye movement disorders.

Severe deficits of foveal smooth pursuit and optokinetic nystagmus in all directions were electro-oculographically recorded in an 80 year old woman. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed an infarct involving the postero-inferior part of the vermis (lobules VI to X) and a portion of the left cerebellar hemisphere, with apparent preservation of the flocculus and the brainstem. The role of the vermal lesion in these pursuit eye movement disorders is discussed.

Eye movement dysfunctions in psychiatric patients: a review.

Impairments of smooth pursuit eye movements occur in a high proportion of schizophrenic patients and in a lower but significant percentage of patients with affective psychoses, as well as patients with structural and metabolic disorders of the central nervous system. These findings have been confirmed using a wide range of tracking tasks, recording techniques, and scoring procedures, and therefore cannot be attributed to measurement artifact. The eye movement disruption in schizophrenics does not seem to result from drug treatment or simple inattention. Eye tracking pattern appears to be under

An eye movement disorder in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Defective pursuit eye movements were recorded by electrooculography (EOG) in 11 of 18 patients (61%) with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Pursuit defects consisted of a breakdown of smooth tracking into saccadic motions that were grossly in excess (frequencies and amplitudes) of saccadic interruptions of pursuit in normal subjects. In nine patients, defective pursuits cogwheeling) were obvious by visual inspection as well as by EOG; in two, this abnormality was seen only by EOG. In eight patients, the pursuit defect was the only abnormality of oculomotor function; in three, there were also sacc

Dreaming Characteristics in Non-Rapid Eye Movement Parasomnia and Idiopathic Rapid Eye Movement Sleep Behaviour Disorder: Similarities and Differences.

BACKGROUND: Speech graph analysis (SGA) of dreams has recently shown promise as an objective and language-invariant diagnostic tool that can aid neuropsychiatric diagnosis. Whilst the notion that dreaming mentations reflect distinct physiologic processes is not new, such studies in patients with sleep disorders remain exceptionally scarce. Here, using SGA and other dream content analyses, we set to investigate structural and thematic differences in morning dream recalls of patients diagnosed with Non-Rapid Eye Movement Parasomnia (NREMP) and Idiopathic REM Sleep Behavior Disorder (iRBD).
