Primary pigmented meningeal melanocytoma originating in Meckel cave in a patient with carney complex: A case report.

RATIONALE: Primary melanin-producing tumors are rare extra-axial neoplasms OPEN of the central nervous system. In the literature, few case reports have discussed neoplasms involving the cavernous sinus; of these, only 4 have reported on neoplasms originating in Meckel cave. The diagnostic approach, including clinical and radiological analysis, is challenging, and cytopathological assessment with a molecular basis is the best approach to discriminate between these lesions. Herein, we discuss the pathophysiology, diagnostic approach, intraoperative features, and postoperative management in a uni

Plasmablastic Myeloma: An Unusual Cause of Peripheral Facial Paralysis.

Peripheral facial paralysis refers to the involvement of the facial nerve (VII cranial nerve) at any point along its path, which starts from its nucleus, located in the pons, and extends to its most distal branches. The etiology is heterogeneous, including viral infections, bacterial infections, trauma, and neoplasms, among others. However, in the majority of cases, the cause is idiopathic, commonly referred to as Bell's palsy. The diagnosis is therefore one of exclusion, based in particular on the physical examination. Naturally, the diagnosis is decisive in directing the therapeutic approach

Minimal Margin Surgery and Intraoperative Neuromonitoring in Benign Parotid Gland Tumors: Retrospective Clinical Study.

Extracapsular dissection (ECD) was introduced for the removal of superficial and small benign parotid tumors. According to a recent proposal, ECD is reserved for tumors that are 3 cm or less, mobile, and close to the parotid borders in cases of pleomorphic adenoma. The aim of the study is to evaluate the effectiveness of ECD for treatment of benign parotid tumors also in cases of tumors that were larger than 3 cm and deeper. All ECD for benign parotid neoplasms conducted between 2007 and 2017 were reviewed. The lesions included were limited to primary parotid tumors and categorized by Quer pro

Horner's Syndrome after Scalene Block and Carotid Dissection.

BACKGROUND: Horner's syndrome refers to the clinical triad of ptosis, miosis, and anhidrosis resulting from disruption of the ocular and facial sympathetic pathways. A myriad of etiologies can lead to Horner's syndrome; awareness of the underlying anatomy can assist physicians in identifying potential causes and initiating appropriate care. CASE REPORT: Two patients presented to our Nashville-area hospital in 2014. Patient 1 was a 26-year-old man who noticed facial asymmetry one day after an outpatient orthopedic procedure. His symptoms were attributed to his posterior interscalene anesthesia

Intratemporal facial nerve neuroma: anatomical location and radiological features.

OBJECTIVES: To present the imaging findings and anatomical locations of a series of 88 facial nerve neuromas from two centers over a 30-year period. We describe the salient radiological features of neuromas in each anatomical location and outline the ways in which modern imaging techniques have altered our perception of this entity. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective review of tumors presenting to two tertiary care referral institutions since 1970. METHODS: The charts and available imaging of patients with the diagnosis of facial neuroma were reviewed. These patients presented to the House Ear Cl

Oral squamous cell carcinoma in a pigtailed macaque (Macaca nemestrina).

An adult, gravid, female pigtailed macaque (Macaca nemestrina) presented for facial swelling centered on the left mandible that was approximately 5 cm wide. Differential diagnoses included infectious, inflammatory, and neoplastic origins. Definitive antemortem diagnosis was not possible, and the macaque's condition worsened despite supportive care. Necropsy findings included a mandibular mass that was locally invasive and expansile, encompassing approximately 80% of the left mandibular bone. The mass replaced portions of the soft palate, hard palate, sinuses, ear canal, and the caudal-rostral

Study of salivary gland lesions with fine needle aspiration cytology and histopothology along with immunohistochemistry.

Salivary gland swelling is a common and important problem. Acute and chronic sialadenitis, different benign and malignant neoplasms are the common causes which present with salivary gland swelling. Imaging technique is not so helpful in pre-operative diagnosis; microscopical examination is required for diagnosis. Pre-operative core needle biopsy is hazardous and may damage facial nerve, lead to fistula formation or associated with tumour seeding. Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is however virtually risk-free. The study was done to assess the utility of FNAC and its accuracy and pitfalls

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor of the parotid gland.

An inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor, previously known as an inflammatory pseudotumor, is an uncommon neoplasm. This tumor, which has characteristic morphologic and immunohistochemical features, is mostly seen in the lung. We present a rare case of an inflammatory myofibroblastic pseudotumor of the parotid gland. A 45-year-old woman presented with a 4-month history of a swelling in her right parotid region. A partial parotidectomy with preservation of the facial nerve branches was performed. The incidence of inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor in the parotid gland is low, and local resection i

Hemangiopericytoma of the skull base and Collet-Sicard syndrome: a case report.

Hemangiopericytoma (HP) is a mesenchymal tumor that originates from the pericytes of the capillary walls. This is a rare neoplasm, particularly in the head and neck; the skull base is involved exceptionally. We report a case of a large HP located in the jugular foramen. The last four cranial nerves were involved, causing a Collet-Sicard syndrome associated with facial palsy. Only one case of HP and Collet-Sicard syndrome is reported in the literature. The clinical course of the disease is described, emphasizing the long period of elapsed time between onset of the complaints and the final diagn

Metastatic adenocarcinoma of the temporal bone.

Metastatic carcinoma involving the temporal bone is an unusual occurrence. A review of the world literature reveals a total of 102 reported cases. Secondary cancers of the temporal bone arise most frequently from mammary, renal, and bronchogenic carcinomas, all of which show a tendency to metastasize to bone. The pathogenesis of spread to the temporal bone is most commonly by the hematogenous route, but extension from intracranial involvement has also been noted. The symptoms of facial nerve paralysis, otalgia, and aural discharge are consistently associated with patients found to have aural c

Posttraumatic intracranial migration of silicone oil after treatment of retinal detachment, a rare complication.

Retinal detachment is popularly treated with intraocular silicone oil tamponade. A rarely observed complication of this procedure is intracranial migration of silicone oil through the optic canal. Though this is typically a benign finding, it can be mistaken on imaging for intracerebral hemorrhage or neoplasm. Orbital trauma has previously been described to have an association with cases of silicone oil migration. Here we present a case of a patient who endured facial trauma, including orbital fracture, and was found to have intraocular silicone oil brain migration. CT imaging of the head reve

Esthesioneuroblastoma as an unusual cause for dystopia.

Abstract Esthesioneuroblastoma, also known as olfactory neuroblastoma, is an uncommon malignant neoplasm arising from the olfactory epithelium in the roof of the nasal cavity. There are very few case reports published worldwide. The common presenting symptoms of Esthesioneuroblastoma are unilateral nasal obstruction (70%), epistaxis (50%), anosmia, rhinorrhoea, facial pain, headache, excessive lacrimation and rarely proptosis and visual disturbance. Apart from being locally aggressive, it metastasizes by haematogenous and lymphatic routes. We report an extremely rare case of esthesioneuroblast

CD56-negative extranodal nasal type NK/T-cell lymphoma.

Extranodal natural killer (NK)/T-cell lymphoma, nasal type, is a rare lymphoma that occurs predominantly in Asian adults. In this report, we describe the clinical and pathologic features of an unusual aggressive lymphoid neoplasm in a child and review the literature on NK/T-cell lymphoma in children. The patient was a 4-year-old Native American male with facial swelling, lymphadenopathy, and fevers. Biopsy demonstrated neoplastic lymphoid cells that expressed CD3, CD8, TIA-1, and EBV-encoded RNA without CD56. The patient failed multiagent chemotherapy and died of therapy-related complications.

Plexiform fibrohistiocytic tumor: a rare low-grade malignancy of children and young adults.

Plexiform fibrohistiocytic tumor (PFT) is a low-grade, superficial, soft tissue neoplasm with a limited but significant ability to metastasize. This type of tumor only rarely presents in the skin of the head and neck. Clinicians first encountering young patients with facial neoplasia, such as a PFT, might be unaware of its exact oncologic potential and instead be primarily concerned with the cosmetic outcome. We treated a 17-year-old boy with a PFT on his cheek who was initially treated only by shave biopsy. The tumor subsequently recurred and metastasized to the cervical lymph nodes 3 years a

[Management of vestibular schwannomas].

Vestibular schwannomas are benign neoplasms originating from the Schwann cells of the vestibular vestibular nerve of the vestibulocochlear nerve, and rarely from the pars cochlearis. These are tumors that are in contact with the nerve but do not bind the fibers. Benign neoplasms of the Schwann cells of the auditory and equilibrium nerves can also occur primarily in the inner ear and are referred to as intralabyrinthine schwannomas (ILS). Vestibular schwannomas represent 6-7 % of all intracranial and 90 % of cerebellopontine angle tumors. Bilateral occurrence occurs in < 5 % of cases, and then

[Tumors of the parotid gland--management and results of surgical treatment].

INTRODUCTION: Tumors of the salivary glands are uncommon and represent 2-4% of head and neck neoplasms. Most tumors originate in the parotid gland, from which 10 to 15% are found to be malignant. Different methods of surgical treatment can be performed depending on the type, localization and size of tumor. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Retrospective analysis of the medical data of 138 patients with parotid gland tumors who where treated in our departament between 1997-2007 was done. RESULTS: There were 74 women and 64 men. Benign tumors were found in 104 patients with the pleomorphic adenoma as the
